Elmo Live! gets hands-on video review, which is as close as you'll get without eBay
The characters over at RobotsRule managed to snag one of the rare review units of the new Elmo Live!, and according to them, the standard order they placed last week has already been canceled by Toys R Us. In other words, this hands-on video review really may be as close as you get to this intelligent ball of fur without forking out wads of cash. Based on the four minutes we get to share with Fisher-Price's latest cash, um, cow, it's easy to see how crazy awesome this thing will seem to your youngster. He recognizes when he has fallen over and begs for help, he goes bonkers when you squeeze his nose and he tells stories and jokes while moving in a fashion that's more "lifelike" than ever. Heck, it even puts itself to sleep to save batteries should your youngin' get called away for chores. All that aside, the best part is Elmo's attempt to bust rhymes, scat and get your kid jumpin' -- seriously, check it out at the 1:15 mark after the break.

xmrgamerx @ Oct 13th 2008 5:47PM
honestly. I don't see this as engadget material, unless elmo was usb powered. now that would be worth money
Nate @ Oct 13th 2008 8:27PM
Uh... mass market robotics? The evolution of learning with smart toys for kids?
Though a USB powered mini elmo live would make a great desktop gadget!
Ridgecity @ Oct 13th 2008 9:53PM
you ask for USB? I guess you totally miss the point, Would you buy it even if it doesn't run Android?
sim-and-sim @ Oct 13th 2008 5:48PM

It's too bad the sound of the servos going constantly takes away from how awesome that thing really is.
Itchy Pajamas @ Oct 13th 2008 6:15PM

Once this Elmo was annouced I thought of the crazyness of tickle me elmo fever a couple years ago... So i decided to preorder around 10 of these babies hoping for another round of elmo fever to his this winter..so far it looks like it will happen seeing that most places are sold out already. It will be highly unlikely that they will be that many available tomorrow in stores because of the fact that most employees take advantage and buy them for themselves.. i should know because i worked for toysrus back in 98 when the hot toy in demand was that damn furby.. which caused parents to beat each other down to get their hands on one..i ended up selling a furby for a clean 1000$ from some corporate business guy that was desperate to get one for his kid lol

Elmo Live > Wii this year
It will have as much novelty as the Wii. People will pick it up, press it a few times, and eventually leave it in the corner. Such was the fate of my Wii. Now....if Elmo came with a USB jack and allowed you to program custom sound files and movements, that's a whole other ball game!

Is that my imagination, or is that David Schwimmer narrating?

That little yellow rubber sphere from the Carnegie-Mellon student? The one that "danced" to music? My contempt for that thing has been totally justified.

All that motor noise is annoying...
Kai @ Oct 14th 2008 11:36AM
Somehow I get the feeling that elmo is a little too fat in the top picture, and a little too skinny in the video...
Siegfried @ Oct 22nd 2008 10:33PM
Elmo has staying power and huge appeal to parents and children alike! This should put some holiday cheer in an otherwise potentially slow end of year for retailers. It's great to see him back, reminds me of the Rocky films franchise. Let's just hope he knows when to quit.
elmo live
