Another rumor to tick off the list,
Apple just announced the 24-inch Cinema Display. LED-backlit, check; Mini

So they refresh the displays but not the Mini? :
Testies, Testies, 1, 2... 3? @ Oct 14th 2008 2:19PM
No, you have it backwards, didn't you read?
holycow @ Oct 14th 2008 1:41PM
oh well that puts an end to the $899 laptop :(
BluesK1d @ Oct 14th 2008 2:04PM
Just put this on your lap. Boom.
Seriously though... $900 for a 24" 1920x1200 display? Wow... Just wow. I was hoping they would come back down to earth but I guess now.
Testies, Testies, 1, 2... 3? @ Oct 14th 2008 2:20PM
$899 for a 24" LED Backlit display, well, simply makes those who buy it a tiny bit less of an idiot than before
LarryLarryLarry @ Oct 14th 2008 7:50PM
i bought an Envision display with exactly the same specs. It doesn't have a USB port or a power socket, but it's not really clear to me why I want a USB port on my monitor. Anwyay, I got $70 worth of rebates and the final price was $280 from Circuit City.
So yes, Apple is still high on crack.
XIYL @ Oct 15th 2008 4:08AM
Not to mention, what the hell is up with Display Port. Why would you want some crappy proprietary port when DVI or D-SUB will the exact same job.
totesen @ Oct 14th 2008 1:41PM
Love it!!!!, really cool design!! i think apple is going all aluminum with glossy black
tpadekar @ Oct 14th 2008 2:16PM
you think...?
Patriks7 @ Oct 14th 2008 3:25PM
Good one Sherlock!
Raptor007 @ Oct 14th 2008 4:26PM
I prefer the old design; the simple brushed aluminum looked classy, and it matched the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro perfectly.
Hyperplasia @ Oct 14th 2008 1:44PM
November?
What about now?
Any why not 1920x1200?
RikF @ Oct 14th 2008 1:45PM
It is - that is an Engadget typo
whowhatme @ Oct 14th 2008 1:45PM
native 1900x1200 not 1900x1080
whatisthe @ Oct 14th 2008 1:45PM
a good price but they need to update the 30" too.
Jeremy K. @ Oct 14th 2008 1:49PM
Good price? I don't think so.
whatisthe @ Oct 14th 2008 1:57PM
LED backlighting is pretty expensive to implement in larger monitors...
PeterG @ Oct 14th 2008 3:46PM
I paid $1200 for an NEC 2490, so this is a good price if it has an IPS panel. Mediocre price for VA, and terrible price if TN.
This is by far the lowest priced LED backlit 24" on the market.
BluesK1d @ Oct 14th 2008 2:06PM
@whatisthe
No it isn't. It's just another Steve tariff.
Shannin @ Oct 14th 2008 3:47PM
@BluesK1d
Yes it is.
Hyperplasia @ Oct 14th 2008 1:49PM
So how would I connect this to my PC? (seriously)
boolean22 @ Oct 14th 2008 2:12PM
Ain't possible... I really expected them to settle this, but this propietary shit ain't good for no one... It's like paying a stiff price for exclusion, when they fill their mouths with great words like compatibility.
I'm a Motion Graphic designer, and NO I ain't gonna get a Mac any soon.
boolean22 @ Oct 14th 2008 2:15PM
Aw, wait, YOU have to sheel out an extra buck for the adapter... ain't it sweet? And will that make the webcam to work too? We'll know soon... I guess, anyways BUMMER!
xcise @ Oct 14th 2008 1:50PM
no digital connections ? does this mean new line of apple displays can not be connected to a PC ?
matt merritt @ Oct 14th 2008 1:53PM
Um... DisplayPort is a digital interface, I imagine that you would need an adaptor.
Not that it matters anyway, Apple displays are terribly over-priced and terribly sub-par.
xcise @ Oct 14th 2008 2:14PM
adapters have a bad mojo for video editing. they tend to compromise color and saturation.
apple cinema displays are really good if you are working in this area.
as my job requires pcs because of the software we are using, it means that i'll be making a real hard research next time we buy monitors. "boss, by me an apple" line seems to be dead for me...
John @ Oct 14th 2008 2:36PM
umm.. how would an adapter affect saturation and sharpness? It's a digital signal.
Mam00th @ Oct 14th 2008 1:52PM
Is there a reason I don't know as of why it's 300$ more expensive then a Dell 2408WFP??
Except that it has a fruit on it
matt merritt @ Oct 14th 2008 1:55PM
Good question, my friends and I have been trying to figure out why Apple Cinema Displays are so expensive for a while now... we got nothing, other then branding. It sure isn't because of their wonderful (read: not to great) response times.
whatisthe @ Oct 14th 2008 2:00PM
maybe because it isn't backlit by LED's...
Mark @ Oct 14th 2008 2:01PM
Here are some of the reasons why its $300 more
1. It's Apple
2. LED Backlit display
3. Built in iSight/mic
4. Built in magsafe adapter for apple laptops
5. Built in Speakers
TIMMAH! @ Oct 14th 2008 2:04PM
Oh don't forget the "style" dollars...
fieldcar @ Oct 14th 2008 2:06PM
One word, apple doesn't use garbage TN pannels. For ONCE I will stand up for apple. If you ever use photoshop or even just edit photos, get ready to jump off a bridge with any TN panel that looses its gamut properties once you look 5 degrees off the axis of the monitor (Just like with my Samsung 226bw). The apple monitors have something like a 270 degree viewing angle in both axes. Just hop over to a best buy and look at every crappy pc display out there, you pay for quality. I'm a diehard windows guy, and I hate the TN pannel trend... I HATE IT!!!!
Jeremy K. @ Oct 14th 2008 2:10PM
The Samsung 226BW is $600 less than this monitor.
The NEC LCD2470WNX seems to be a vastly better monitor than this one.

Most people don't know the difference between a TN, S-IPS, P-MVA. For designers and content creators, there's a big difference. For web surfing and email, there's no reason to buy the more expensive version.
KarlW @ Oct 14th 2008 2:25PM
I'd sell my 2407WFP-HC for this, but there are a few drawbacks I'm not sure on:
- HDCP support?
- One connector. I have a PS3 as well as a MacBook, and use both on the 2407. I suppose I could get a switch, but I'm not happy about it.
- No external audio connector. I suppose the sound comes through DisplayPort, but if you use an adapter from something that doesn't use HDMI for sound, you've got to use externals (which are better, I suppose, but I'd like the option)
I suppose I'll stick with the 2407 and get an additional MagSafe cable. It won't look as sexy, but it works better.
Quix @ Oct 14th 2008 3:03PM
Good grief people, can we stop griping about Apple's prices? Apple makes premium products at premium prices. If you don't care about a nice looking aluminum and glass body, built-in camera, LED backlighting, etc. then save your $300 and get a Dell. Seems pretty simple to me. That's what Dell is there for - to provide less-expensive-to-make products at lower prices.
Geez, why does a restaurant charge $6 for a hamburger when you can get a Double Stack at Wendy's for .99? The nerve!!!
Bah.
drathos @ Oct 14th 2008 3:58PM
@fieldcar: "The apple monitors have something like a 270 degree viewing angle in both axes."
So you can view them from behind? Nice job pulling bullshit numbers out of your ass. Max it could possibly be is just shy of 180 degrees (can't really be 180 because you wouldn't be able to see the face from that angle) in either axis.
David @ Oct 14th 2008 8:57PM
"Most people don't know the difference between a TN, S-IPS, P-MVA."
Yes they do. They just think that some LCD displays are good and some crappy without an idea of why. After all, it's hard not to see the color and contrast shifts, especially with TN display and especially when off axis vertically. If people could make the connection between what they were seeing and the panel type (something that's hard to do because panel type isn't usually on the sales placard at the store), they'd certainly develop preferences.
Erik @ Oct 14th 2008 9:16PM
Still loving my Dell 24WFP. I was a little worried that as soon as I bought it, Apple would refresh the Cinemas and I'd regret the Dell, especially since I was replacing an older cinema display. Nope. Still love the Dell and no regrets at all.
It runs $600-700, 24", 1920x1200, tons of ports including USB, HDMI (2 of those!), VGA, S video, component, displayport, etc.
Jim @ Oct 14th 2008 10:05PM
@fieldcar:
270 degrees of viewing angle? So I can view the screen from behind?! Awesome!
SimonSharks @ Oct 14th 2008 1:53PM
The question I have is are these displays glossy?
And if they are - are pros going to like them?
Jeremy K. @ Oct 14th 2008 1:57PM
Yes, the display is glossy. Look at the photo. The height is also seemingly not adjustable. The target audience for this monitor is obviously wealthy consumers who don't really know better.
AdamRedwoods @ Oct 14th 2008 2:18PM
Correct-o! I have no idea why they would go glossy. Fighting glare is a royal pain.
CraigJ @ Oct 14th 2008 2:19PM
non-adjustable. just like my 22" Samsung, and my 20" Dells at work...
honestly, after using my wife's Dell (with the 15.4" glossy display, I prefer it to the matte, especially for photos.
John @ Oct 14th 2008 2:40PM
As a pro I certainly wont buy one. I have a 24" IPS panel from HP I bought for $650. It will beat the socks off this VA panel and it's cheaper.
dannyB @ Oct 15th 2008 8:42PM
I think this display is boss, if I wasn't stuck in Italy for school until December I would have the new MacBook today, but I guess I will just wait till I get back and pick up the MacBook along with this display which will be out by then.
doink @ Oct 14th 2008 1:55PM
Looks sweet. I don't know if it's worth the price though. I can't see how it would connect to a PC. Unless you purchase you some adapter which will be made by apple. (grown)
