Ben Heck apprentice strikes again with DarthCast
Look out Ben Heck, you don't want to be overcome by one of your own followers, now do you? Merely months after the clearly talented hailrazer churned out a mighty impressive portable Nintendo 64, the guy has done it again by creating an on-the-go Dreamcast -- using the same style of Lazer Doodle shell, to boot. After acquiring another chassis, a Dreamcast, a Quantam controller, PSOne LCD, power supply and some serious battery power, the DarthCast was created. Reportedly, the thing can go for around three hours before puckering out, and you'll know your time is short when it starts sighing heavily in a muffled tone. Check the vid after the break, and pay your respects in the read link, son.

Is there anything he can't do. I am continually impressed by this guy's work.
you mean Ben Heck or this guy?
Why not both?
I meant Heck, but sure why not the author too?
@Fred:
The article isn't about Ben Heck though...
This is TRUE! o29, I am an utterly stupid person. Thanks for pointing out something I would have known had I not skimmed the article.
Your avatar is also a cat with a pineapple on its head. Not sure if you knew that or not.
@Fred:
I thought maybe you misunderstood the article, since I'm not sure why you'd say you're "continually impressed" by Ben Heck when this has nothing to do with him.
Anyway this is Engadget after all, so assuming that someone actually read the article summary is sometimes presumptuous.
I think this needs a thin plastic cover on the back for the CD.
I like Ben's work. He should be working for SONY and producing form factors that f*ckin make sense.
He said he's making a cover for it it just isn't complete yet. Or did you not watch the video?
I don't think the author of this article bothered to watch the video either. Engadget have called it the Darthcast, but it's creator calls it the Dreamtrooper.
I'm really impressed by all this too. Must weigh as much as a house though...
Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast... The sonic game worth playing....
Dreamcast you will be missed...
I loved the Dreamcast, but I have to disagree with you on this one. Sonic Adventure sucked, and is the God Father of the shitty Sonic games we see today.
The last good Sonic game was Sonic & Knuckles on the Genesis.
can't wait for Sonic 2 HD (hoping they don't get bullied by SEGA)
Agreed. I still own a Dreamcast just to occasionally reminisce about this game. Pity that it lacked any other big titles though - probably what killed it.
Soul Calibur 1.
I have SC4 for the PS3, and the Hori SC Arcade Fighting Stick, and it's just not the same fun.
Right before the battery dies, it should go "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" as the screen turns off.
Hm. But that would be kind of Darth Vader-esque though. I'm pretty sure Darth Vader had a black mask I mean correct me if I'm wrong. =P
this looks more storm trooper-ish to me. iono, maybe i'm crazy....
sorry....a psone lcd? you mean a psp lcd?
i never knew PSP comes with square LCD, please sell me one :D
No, there used to be PSone LCD's that would attatch to the top of the psone.

Well, there's the new thing I learned for today. What to do now? Drink?
How about not correcting people when you don't know what the fuck you're talking about?
Little harsh Kaven. Shawn, pour me a Jack while you're at it.
You mean PCP LSD?
Again, SO cool.
I want portable Shenmu!
Hey there... I really respect your opinion; I like what you said and strongly agree. Something about you seems to be very cool.
hittin in peeps on engadget?
Wow...
Raad, thats by far the funniest, most pussy-whipped inspired reply I've ever seen on this site, only assuming of course that it was authentic.
@Saad Rabia -
Wow. I think it's time to change your name to Sad Labia.
@Christina -
I'd just like to apologize for Saad's awkwardly forward and obnoxiously sexist remarks. Over dinner.
SWOOP!
@Saad: LOL
Now thats a first....
people trying to hit on another person very badly on engadget.
The world has gone mad!!!!
i dont blame the guy
I don't blame anyone for hitting on a hot chick that likes great retro games, no matter how shameful it looks, the risk is worth the reward for winning a chance to date her. Now, this being the internet, it's just as likely a 40 year old male who likes playing head games. That said, back to the topic.
How much did it cost to actually make this wonderful amalgamation?
Do you have any step by step material so others could possibly make their own?
If not, how much would you charge to make me one?
To bad the only game I care about {soulcaliber} is 2 player
OMFG, that is so effing hot!!
Wow, very nice.
My only gripe might be the use of the quantum fighter pad as the controller. It's nice to have 6 face buttons, but this pad recognizes the last two as being merely another programmable A,B,X, or Z as opposed to C, Z (or L,R)
Not that it really takes away anything from this beautiful piece of work. Great job.
That guy has some ill skillz.....
It's DreamTrooper, not DarthCast...
YAH! It would only be the "DarthCast" if it were black, shiny and menacing.
Exactly. Hey, did anyone know that this article was not about Ben Heck? Just thought I'd clarify. This article was not about Ben Heck.
Yeah I was just about to say that too.
Wow that is cool! I would pay some serious dough for that. Also I guessing that the memory unit is build in.
thats the manliest avatar ive seen all year.
Hellraizer, Ben heck is your father.Fulfil you destiny and turn to the hackable side
@Fred:
The article isn't about Ben Heck though...
Stupid comment system...
Yes.
The word is "tuckering."
12pack of Keystone Light + Crazy Taxi = Dreamcast nostalgia.
Now if he could just cut out the mouth hole and add some haptic rumble up in there...
Dude, that is sweeeeeeet.
WOW. serious skills. what's next for this guy? Dreamcast nostalgia will certainly enjoy some rejuvenation, but only until his next creation becomes reality.
shit tight...
is it just me, or does this guy sound EXACTLY like JF Sebastian?
anybody?
It looks like Jason's hockey mask. (Waits for younger crowd to say "Huh?")
Very cool though. Nice, clean, slick design. Would love to play some Rush 2049, or RE:CV on it. I need to drag my Dreamcast out of storage and hook it back up. Haven't played it since 2001'ish.
i wish these guys would sell these creations.
sounds like teddy from prisonbreak
I always love consoles made portable, especially in classy cases. I agree with what someone has already said, though, why not use a real DreamCast controller? It would have been nice to have the authentic thumbstick, d-pad, and most importantly, the colored buttons. And did I miss it, or is there room for a VMU? Probably built in. Very nice work.
Anyone who still has a Dreamcast should preserve it.
Where's the vmu?
good way to play soulcaliber on the go!
I wish I could be good at modding.
