Iomega ships Bluetooth-equipped 1TB / 2TB StorCenter ix2 NAS
If you've been passing off NAS devices for years due to the typically prohibitive price tags, you might want to have a gander at Iomega's latest. The StorCenter ix2 brings 1TB (500GB x 2) of network storage for just $299.99, and the 2TB edition is also available for around $170 more. In short, the box -- which isn't much to look at, admittedly -- promises to provide backup for all of your critical files regardless of which networked computer they're on. Additionally, users with top secret snaps on their Bluetooth-enabled cellphone will appreciate the optional BT compatibility, not to mention the gigabit Ethernet jack and twin USB sockets. Oh, and it also doubles as an iTunes server and supports both UPnP and DLNA protocols, meaning that this fellow should do a decent job of serving up media on the side.

The next time I want to sync my 1+TB phone book I'll think of this ...
lowdef @ Oct 15th 2008 12:25PM
apparently you can send your "top secret snaps" from your vga motorola krzr to your massive hard drive too. thank god...anyways, you wouldnt want to transfer too much over bluetooth, its already slow as hell going phone to phone transferring kb of data

I know this is an Iomega article, but, is that a MacBook Pro running Windows that I see in the background?
disciple83 @ Oct 15th 2008 11:56AM
does it matter at all? Macbooks can run windows, PCs can (technically), run OSX, this NAS drive just got put on my Christmas list, and that's all that's really important. Stay focused here.

Its called product placement.

it looks like a vaio N
Derek @ Oct 15th 2008 1:39PM
It's definitely a MBP. It always amuses me to see them running Windows in ads (though this hardly equals the one Microsoft ad that had an iBook - incapable of running Windows natively).

Transfering 2 TB over Bluetooth might take a while...
tom @ Oct 15th 2008 12:06PM
bluetooth equipped...has USB of course
Kris @ Oct 15th 2008 12:08PM
Why does the title say "ships" when Iomega states on their website that "Product will begin shipping October 30, 2008"?

Glad to see the product designers of the zip disk fame still have their jobs at iomega. Seriously,
looks like the Jaz drive 2 for the love of geez.

I had a previous (but recent) Storcenter and it was a seriously flawed product. The 1TB model (2 500GB drives) had these flaws:
(I wanted to run in mirrored mode)
1) If a drive failed, the light would stay green (no notification or disk error)
2) When the drive failed, rather than mark one disk as good and one as failed, it would simply convert the RAID from mirrored to spanned.
3) So when you replaced the failed drive, you couldn't even remirror the normal way (a bit by bit copy from good to new disk). The only method was change the existing disk back to mirrored which would reformat it and when done, both drives would be ready to go in mirrored mode but would both be empty.
4) When I found out, I wanted to return the drives but I had copied sensitive financial data onto them. And where there is software which can truly wipe a disk (deleting files doesn't really remove the data), that software is all incompatible with these drives. These drives could not be direct attached and both Iomega support and the various disk wiping software companies I spoke with all said this was a limitation and could not be done.
In the end, I opened the case, removed the drives and installed them internally in my PC. So now I have 2 500 GB drives that I paid roughly $350 for and now I'm still left needing to go buy some decent backup software.

Does this thing have FTP built in or any other USEFUL features that come with other NAS's? I wouldn't market a NAS with the main feature being bluetooth compatible....lame.
Harry Wagstaff @ Oct 15th 2008 2:11PM
Seeing as the bluetooth is optional, I don't think they're marketing it as the main feature.
Zedjunior @ Oct 15th 2008 3:18PM
hm, on macbook pro operating system microsoft windows... omg :x
