Averatec's 18.4-inch all-in-one PC gets the hands-on treatment
Averatec's latest 18.4-inch PC somehow manages to stand out in the wide world of all-in-ones, and yeah, the $549.99 price point helps in that regard. Laptop Mag managed to get ahold of one of these unique beasts, and they really seemed to dig it. The polarizing design was appreciated, the display was smiled upon and the hardware was decent enough for the most basic of tasks. But we know it's the images and videos you're really after, so head on down to the read link for all of that.

yeah, it stands out. Even in laptop space, in circa 2004, Averatec introduced sub 1000 USD ultra portable (12') laptops..

Averatec has proven to me they're a disreputable company to deal with when it comes to warranty service.
When I purchased an Averatec laptop, I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. It was inexpensive, lightweight and while not feature full, it performed adequately, at first.
Then it began having problems, due to what turned out to be a known manufacturing defect. Averatec did not contact me in any way regarding the issue after I registered the laptop, and they did not live up to their warranty. Seven months in on a one year warranty, I required their support for this "known" manufacturing defect. It was either the wrong type of solder, or a substandard solder has been used in the construction of the laptop. The result was overheating, inability to charge the battery, and other issues.
When I contacted Averatec, they insisted I pay $80 for the "repair", pay for shipping, and it would take about 3 weeks, not including ship time to complete. This was for a defect, not just a failed component or end-user error, on a warranty that was supposed to cover defects.
So, I turned to their forums for help and advice, where my non-abusive, cordial requests for assistance, were deleted. And further phone calls to the company didn't get the issue resolved. So I shelved the laptop and later sold it for parts.
I will never again buy Averatec products. They concentrate on looking good, but there was no substance to their support when I needed it.
So as "cool" as their designs may be, buyer beware. Averatec sucks.

ouch. that makes me seriously reconsider this machine. It looks great, but that doesn't help me if the machine breaks down after a year.

I thought XP was now only allowed on machines with 10" or smaller screens? Or something to that effect...
XIYL @ Oct 17th 2008 6:21AM
I just voted... you down.

That is a really nice looking PC. I actually prefer the look over the Sony introduced a few days ago and the display is adjustable.
