Pharos'
line of GPS-equipped Windows Mobile handsets has sort of lost its place in our hearts now that seemingly every phone under the sun -- smartphone or otherwise -- comes equipped with wicked advanced AGPS out of the box, but the company's latest pair actually looks competitive for reasons that have nothing to do with GPS whatsoever. Sure, GPS is nice, but the Traveller 117 and 127 really rock on account of tri-band 7.2Mbps downstream HSPA, and in the case of the 117, a VGA display. They've also got 2-megapixel primary and VGA front-facing cames, Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, and covert semi-official launches courtesy of Dell's online store. What more could you ask for?

These look very much like re-branded versions of the velocity mobile 103 and 111.

Yes, these Qualcomm 7201 devicea are clearly from Inventec. I guess when Inventec booted David Hayes and the whole Velocity Mobile crew for failing to do, well, anything, Pharos became the number one customer.

anyone notice a silver Bold and a mix between a chocolate and a venus?
gad get @ Oct 20th 2008 6:07AM
Nope.
Phoenix @ Oct 20th 2008 6:25AM
So... a Blackberry Bold clone and an HTC Touch Diamond clone...
Nice inventiveness there guys.
Phoenix @ Oct 20th 2008 6:27AM
Also, those screens are CRAZY small for the areas around them. i mean, look how bit the Pharos logo is on the diamond clone.
Also Engadget, great job on noticing copying of devices that aren't the iPhone >.< The bias becomes more apparent by the day.

Why bother with the old SPB Mobile Shell on these pics?.. ouch guys.
wako @ Oct 20th 2008 8:44AM
im glad im not the only one that picked it up
SirPhunkee @ Oct 20th 2008 11:56AM
ditto. I guess the budget for developing a custom winmo shell had to be diverted to cover the costs of printing that ginormous PHAROS logo on the case.
Will @ Oct 21st 2008 11:19AM
hey come on that's an influential design right there.
you know it is.

That "GPS" logo at the top right corner is just unnecessary.
rock99rock @ Oct 20th 2008 11:40AM
Im all for vga res displays, but there is just too much wasted space on that 117. The 127 has great lines and just looks quite clean in general.
RayanMX @ Oct 20th 2008 3:39PM
Velocity Mobile anyone?
Those suckers look just like the so-promised-but-never-released Velocity Mobile 111 and 103... Go wonder....
I bet Velocity Mobile went belly up and Pharos rescued the "idea"...
Sorry but no cigar for me...
