iPhone 3G, BlackBerry Storm and Bold compared on video: awkward...
One might think that the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Storm could get along together, but similar to twin brothers who both aspire to graduate Magna Cum Laude from an Ivy league school, these two aren't exactly the most loving of siblings. Oh, and toss in that iPhone 3G -- which played a huge role in helping Apple sell more phones than RIM last quarter -- and you've got yourself a bona fide mess. Check out all three getting shoved up on one another in the name of comparison just after the break. It's a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll get used to it.

wiggly icons go wiggle!
i like how the iphone's homescreen got stuck between page 1 and 2 at the end of the video...
this video was utterly useless. looking at specs gives you a better understanding of sizes than looking at them from a terrible angle.
Whether or not this post gets down ranked or not...
in my opinion, the iPhone 3G is the best for people who don't prioritize texting over "playing with the phone" and getting maximum screen size for their pictures, camera and web browsing.
the iPhone will never be able to test as well as the BB with keypad simply because it has BUTTONS vs. a flatscreen. I've used the ENVY from Verizon which has tactile feedback and frankly, it wasn't as good as the iphone not because of the feedback, but because its scrolling and typing wasn't as "smooth" as iphone's.
The way I see it, You're comparing apples to oranges if you compare the iPhone to anything else but another touchscreen, minimal buttoned phone. The Storm is a fine comparison.
I usually sync my iphone through itunes to Yahoo mail so my contacts are perfectly organized with my regular web browser on my computer. The way I see it, Itunes should integrate an "outlook" like data organizer so you can import/export data to mail accounts with JUST ITUNES rather than that mobileme bullshit.
I use my iPhone for picture take and send; youtube (mxtube) and web browsing. I have mobilechat for AIM but that's all I needed it for so that's the phone I got. Rather than a Sidekick 3.
The Storm looks good and I might switch over if it can do the things I want it to do. I have a car with a 6-CD changer/MP3 player so music in the phone is unnescessary and I never use it for that...especially since it doesn't have A2DP.

"I've used the ENVY from Verizon which has tactile feedback and frankly, it wasn't as good as the iphone not because of the feedback, but because its scrolling and typing wasn't as "smooth" as iphone's."
Did you mean the LG Dare or LG Voyager? Those have touch screen with the tactile feedback or aka VibeTouch. Plus Verizon no longer sells the Envy, they only sell the updated model which is Envy2.
You are right. Its the DARE.
Well apparently the haptics involved here are much more effective than LG's poor attempt. My friend had a Voyager for like 2 days before returning it. Using that touch screen felt like you were receiving dozens of texts or emails per minute. It was ridiculous. I don't know why, but the auditory clack of the iphone keyboard really helps me. I'm much more accurate and fast when I have sound on vs. sound off. Subtlety is the key to haptics.
geez such controversy! It's obvious that the only thing srong with this guy is that his spoon is too big.
The lack of a Touch Diamond amuses me...
You beat me to it. Throw an HTC Touch Pro/Diamond in there, and you've got basically all the phones currently out bidding for the same market. Arguably the Bold doesn't really belong.
On the contrary, I'd say it lives up to it's name (bold)- it sticks out like a sore thumb.
How about some e71 love as well..?
The Touch diamond and E71 are both pretty disappointing in use. They look similar, but don't really compare.
The Touch Diamond is actually very laggy. The UI is great but it isn't quite as responsive as the iPhone's (or the Bold's, which actually uses a button; the entire screen..).
so........
i still say between the storm and iphone3g
storm wins
but thats just me
idk bout the people
with steve job's balls in their mouths
Yeah, all 6.9 million of them. Because we all know that EVERY SINGLE PERSON who has ever expressed the slightest appreciation for an Apple product is just a stupid fanboy.
no i like apple products
the new macbook
is hot
but you know those people
those people that take it a Bit to far...
ya im sure you dont
welcome to engadget
Yes, saying that anybody who likes the iPhone is servicing Steve Jobs is clearly showing that you make rational points which are arrived at after extensive reflection on the products.
Get real. The iPhone is the phone to beat. Is it coincidence that RIM are trying to make phones that match the iPhone in design and interface? Everybody's trying to take on the iPhone. Do you think Android would have come about if Apple didn't first show how weak Windows Mobile and RIM's hold on the market was? Do you think these touch-screen phones with proper browsers would have just come about on their own? Apple did reinvent the phone. If you deny that, you're blind.
You don't have to like them, but anybody being objective has to acknowledge that the mobile phone market is radically different than it was 2 years ago, thanks in no small part to Apple.
Just a quick remark,
Saying an inanimant object is hot = Fanboyism
Oh, God, I am such a pot and pan fanboy. That thing was smokin'!!!
KAIKAI kaimonkey or whatever you are called now
What are you trying to achieve with these messages?
good question...
why am i reading a tech blog btw ??
cuz i can :)
I think he's just showing off... damn...
I'd say the Iphone 3G wins. Technically, the Storm is better on the inside, but when you compare the prices, onboard memory, and software of the phones, I think Iphone is still on top. Storm is still a good alternative though.
Huh? You know the price that Verizon is selling it for with a 2 yr contract? Funny, currently no on here does. Without the price it's hard to really compare the value of the memory. Storm is coming with 9gb (1gb internal, 8gb SD Card installed).
Buttons..pssshh.. so 90's
or Nokia from 1999 or maybe Ericcson?
I wonder where Blackberry got the idea to put a large logo on the back cover in the center?
Mercedes-Benz?
Perhaps from Dell.
I wonder why most people assume that a post like this is referring to Apple. I mean, the only reason for that would be, dare I say, because Apple is the one that other companies mimic most often. So logically speaking, it follows that people on Engadget think that Apple has the most original ideas worth copying. Aha! You are all fanboys!
˚˚
or maybe people are referring to apple because this post is about 2 blackberry phones being compared to an iPhone...
Damn, I nearly burst out laughing as I misread it as saying "Get shoved up one another."
...It's a little uncomfortable at first, but you'll get used to it...
I thought I saw the exact same thing.
Epic win to sw for that one.
I'm not a huge iPhone fan, but on pure aesthetics it seems to be hard to beat the iPhone in size and looks. The storm looks kinda pudgy and short when put next to the iPhone. I however would like to see the keyboard on the Storm in action and the haptic feedback
"I'm not a huge iPhone fan, but on pure aesthetics it seems to be hard to beat the iPhone in size and looks. The storm looks kinda pudgy and short when put next to the iPhone"
I would agree with you, but size and looks are one thing. Having a phone based around one handed use is another, giving you convenience and speed. That's just me though, I want products that are designed to make things simplistic and hell, takes less effort on my part. :D Laziness FTW!
I am looking at getting a new phone with ATT and want to know if I should get the IPhone or wait for the Bold?
It all depends on what you want to do with it, if you just want to text, email, and websurf, I would go with the bold. If you want music and apps and games and all that other stuff thats the new craze, go with the iphone.
I just dont understand why people dont get a phone for phone stuff, and get something like an archos for stuff like music and videos.
"I just dont understand why people dont get a phone for phone stuff, and get something like an archos for stuff like music and videos."
Most of us used to have such a set up. Many of us got sick of packing two devices everywhere - not to mention most phones aren't great at email and are miserable at the Web.
My iPhone fits my needs perfectly - if only it had a turn-by-turn navigation app.
Why are you guys saying to get the iphone for music? IT DOESN'T HAVE A2DP. Music sucks when you're tethered to your device. BB's have a great music player and with the cheap price of microSD cards, unlimited storage. I wouldn't take an iphone if you paid me (ok I would, but I'd resell it) because I can't stand to have a cord hanging from my ears when listening to music. There's no replacement for a pair of Motorola S9 headphones and a real phone that is productive.
Hmm.. A2DP. Hope Apple lets us have it soon as I've heard it's there somewhere. As for listening to music with the iPhone, it really is quite nice. When I want piece and quiet, I just whip out my headphones and chill. If I want to watch a movie, I don't always need the headphones, I just use the built-in speaker. But, yeah, it'd be nice to just go Bluetooth style on the iPhone, after all, it's supposed to be really powerful.
peace*. Sorry.

Bingo. I used to have an audio player, and a pda phone that sucked balls at internet. I got tired of having pockets full of electronics so I got an Iphone. At the time it was the only phone that did music and videos well and came with storage. I don't want to have a pocket full of memory cards so i can "have unlimited storage" that's a lame excuse. Also at the time the largest memory card you could get for a phone was 8gb which does not equal 16gb. No comparison.
As for this new line of phones, I dislike blackberries as phones. I've been carrying one for work for the last 3 years and they've gotten better but they're still pretty terrible for web surfing, I don't bother with the music player, but they're great for email. And that's all I want a blackberry for.
or should I go to Verizon and get the Storm
Get in the stores and get some hands-on time with each of them. That'll tell you more than the sniping on Engadget.
bye bye iPhone, the killer has killed!
How can the killer has killed if the killer isn't even out yet?
killer is to be announced very very soon, nokia's N series touch screen phone
btw how come u kill something that is already dead
jeez its the IVEY league... not Ivy!
It is?

Wow. Just...wow. Good luck with that Yale application.
