PlayStation Home hacked, the search for backup exploits begins
Hackers, like life, will find a way. Sony knows that all too well thanks to the PSP, but so far the PlayStation 3 has stood strong in the face of legions of nerds trying to find a way to exploit it. A potentially major breakthrough may have been made, though, as well-known PS3 hacker StreetskaterFU (we've no idea what he's going for with that name -- really) has managed to decrypt the beta client for Sony's PlayStation Home service. Curious devs can now poke around in the files looking for a way to exploit the newish in-game XMB functionality, potentially allowing homebrew apps and game backups without hard drive swapping. There's no guarantee it will lead anywhere in the end, but you don't care either way, right? Our upstanding readership would never participate in such heinously illegal activities.

They will never have privacy at all.
Have wanky architechts?
How about.. no stone throwing regardless of housing situation?
All my hackers got m16's kid.
All we do is watch Tech TV cribs.
actually it should be only people in glass houses should throw stones...provided they are trapped..with the stones
... shouldn't walk around in the nude?
And here I just thought that the PS3 was an overpriced BD player...
No doubt my hat is off to SKFU for the hack, but if someone can afford the PS3 they should be able to afford both of the decent games available for it and not need to hack it.
Overpriced you say? Jesus, get over it. If you don't want to get one, don't. Stop having to justify why you don't want one, it's okay. Also, your argument is like saying, "If someone can afford to buy an iPhone (or anything else classed as overpriced) then why would they want to jailbreak it?". The reason people hack isn't because they can't afford software, hardware, etc., it's because they can.
The PS3 already plays a plethora of media formats and codecs. It even has linux! Sony offers almost all the features people want in firmware updates. Unlike consoles of the past this one doesn't really have to be hacked to add extra functionality. It can even be a PVR for god sakes. The only issue here is playing backups (what sony is afraid of) and we don't really want to download friggin huge Game ISO files... I think sony failed by preventing full usage of the RSX under linux. It lowers the possibilities for some sweet emulation and many linux program ports. It is interesting to see that even though the other 2 consoles have gotten hacked they still have strong developer support hence why the 360 has a better/bigger library. Witch leads me to another fail. The cell processor is very difficult to create games for from what I have read. I love my PS3 don't get me wrong but here is some constructive criticism and I hope they learn from this for the next console generation. *prays this won't open a can of fanboy worms*
Whilst I agree with what you're saying, I think Sony did a brave thing in choosing the Cell Processor to power the PS3. Whilst it may not be the *best* idea at the moment, it could either evolve into something really good or something that just didn't work. Either way, it's my belief that companies shouldn't just stay with the tried and tested and I thought it was nice of Sony to have some guts and try something new.
I'm sure you can agree, things on the PS3 side of things *are* getting a lot better recently, and IMHO the Cell is now starting to show its full potential =]
Yeah you are right about that but ultimately competition is what stifled the progress of cell. Competition is a good thing though because it made the PS3 more affordable. However, most games are built for xbox 360 first and then ported to the PS3. Hence why it took this long for people to start taking full advantage of the cell. This may also attribute to why there are so many 720p titles and not 1080p titles on top of the fact that it is difficult to discern between 1080p and 720p on most all displays under 50" unless you get close to where it isnt recommended (in other words most mainstream priced TV's). Anyways Im getting very off topic. Hurray Haxxors! open the gates to Pandora's box. Now I will twiddle my thumbs until we can boot up games without firmware updates and we get some retrogaming... =]
'Our upstanding readership would never participate in such heinously illegal activities.'
Certainly, nothing like hax0ring up a video games console after a hard day's people smuggling, drug dealing & pimpin'...
You start out hacking games, then you're robbing liquor stores, and sellin' crack and RUNNING over SCHOOL KIDS WITH YOUR CAAARRRRRR
Wait I thought that started after playing GTA4?
now if you will excuse me I have to go smack by bitch up.... she's biting the neighbors again.
Wrong, it started when USA was made. It's the american dream. GTA just let's everyone experience it.
There are two major problems with this article.
One: This decrypted version of Home (0.8.6) is rather out dated (current version 0.9.8). This means if its even hacked to run it won't work with the current servers.
Two: Home has not supported any in-game XMB in past and current builds, so the article is wrong in the fact that inGame XMB exploits can be found.
I would like the title to be changed from 'hacked' to 'decrypted' as a decryption is not a full hack, but rather a step towards a full hack.
Just my 2 cents
He should post this once the final version is out (for the final version, of course). Now, Sony would probably fix the hole in the final version of Home...
When you buy a game, you tend to value and enjoy it more. When you just pirate games, you don't usually get to appreciate the work that goes in them.
I agree with this, but...
when you buy a game you feel obliged to pursue with it, when you don't purchase the game it has to be pretty friggin good to keep your attention. Most games hold my attention for less than 10 minutes, but I do have a Wii.
well now that the PS3 is beginning to get hacked would anyone like to see a PS3 2.50M33 ????
Shouldn't the pic say hax0red?
This is good news. Just got a ps3 for $250 with the credit card deal. Amazing machine for the price. One thing I dont understand is why people think it's expensive considering there are so many deal out there to get it for $250 when u apply for sony credit card. Even with the 30% paypal ebay cashback, you can get it around that price or lower with the 40gb model.
The ps3 has alot of potential to be alot of things. I'm interested if this leads to anything. Hopefully homebrew development with PS2 emulator, neogeo, firefox browser, etc....I wish
WTF... Illegal?? WRONG, dope.
I've grown to accustomed to keeping the active games on playing on the Console Harddrive. Xbox1 modding has ruined me for every future console that cannot do it (yet, hopefully). PS3 is so close, but I won't touch it till I can do this. and modding will most likely be the only way.
I can't see the piece of being illegal. I you go buy a car you can do whatever you want to it. Put dubs on it, new tires, even put a new engine in it. With that said you should be to do whateva you like to any console. Who cares if I want to run linux on it and make it a web server. Its mine!
The other retarded piece to this whole discussion of backing up games is why haven't the consoles made it so the game runs 100% on the internal harddrive. You can get a 1TB harddrive for under $100 bucks. Lets say for easy math each game 10GB/1000GB that is 100 games per console. It will run faster and you can put the disc away. These console companies just want to lock you down to what they sell for it and charge 10 fold of what the equipment is worth.
Your Logic is flawed.
You are comparing a car (something you own) to a game (like many softwares you dont own, you are licensed to use.)
Sure you can mod your hardware for PS3 all you want. But doesnt mean you are allow to backup things you are licensed to use. To put this in car speak. It is like flashing your ECU, it WILL void your warranty.
A holes... just pay for fucking games you scum bags, i've had my ps3 for 1 year and have 28 games for it... there not that fucking expensive, besides i would rather lick a donkeys sweaty nut sack dry than risk getting ban from PSN for using "homebrew" or worse BRICK a FUCKING PS3, I mean shit can you imagine the cold dread when you realize its not booting anymore that would totally suck monkey fuck!!!
$1680 in games.
That would pay my part of the rent for the better part of a year.
