It hasn't been too awfully long since Windows Vista SP1 hit the intertubes
for real, but the Vista team is already
talking up SP2. Granted, we all know Redmond is focused on moving beyond all of this Vista hoopla and forging ahead with
Windows 7, but there's apparently still
some work to do on the outfit's current OS. Unfortunately, the latest update isn't exactly enthralling, as we're given no set time frame for launch and we're not shown any forthcoming changes that really get our juices flowing. For instance, Vista SP2 will add Windows Search 4.0 for faster and improved relevancy in searches, the Bluetooth 2.1 Feature Pack, ability to natively record data on Blu-ray media and Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify WiFi configuration. Wait, did you just yawn? You did. We saw it.
You can get the better search now. WS4 is a free download from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/choose/windowssearch4.mspx
It'll have to rebuild your index, which means disk thrashing for a few hours after the install, but after that, it's a totally difference experience.
What they didn't mention on the blog post though is the impressive speed improvements in SP2. I guess for safety incase the f*** up the speed again before release...
But yeah, if anyone here goes to install SP2, you'll notice it is considerably faster and snappier. And this is much more than mistakable for a "placebo" effect, this is very noticeable.
Boot up and shutdown speeds are significantly improved as well, back to XP speeds.
I wish Microsoft made a stripped down OS without any flafla for serious workers though... One attractive version for mister everyone and a skeleton version for the guys knowing what they do. A version for graphic and 3D designer would be good too! with increase fonts support and stuff like Acdsee (like cs3 bridge). Or all that as options when you install the OS!!
And you know Microsoft is giving a 50,000$ reward for find a missing teenager escaping home after a quarrel over his Xbox360? Engadget is ignoring it obviously cause Microsoft is suppose to be the bad guys...

'escaping' home? This playing in some prison camp?
and people say that microsoft have few fanboys....
Does this mean that Vista will finally support A2DP ?
Cos I'm sick of leaving my Cardo S2 in some dusty corner whilst both my bluetooth chips (one built-in and one external) fail.
presumably, since that is a 2.1 feature

"Install the Service Pack, and then there will be cake."
Am I the only person that just doesn't see the point of those widgets on the desktop? Let's see...we have a freakin' huge analogue clock, when I have a far superior digital clock just there in the lower right hand corner of my screen.
Then, we have a stamp sized preview of some pictures I have somewhere on my harddrive. Do I really need a picture of Auntie Irma at our last family dinner permanently in my peripheral vision?
Next is a new mail notifier, like the one I have in the system tray, just bigger.
Next, a bunch of games/utilities, that I already have a quickstart icon for.
Oh, and the trashcan, which was obviously totally unusable and underrated as a simple desktop icon.
Seriously, what's the point of having these thing take up screen space, when everything the do is already available without a huge freakin' billboard of an icon having to scream at me permanently?
The weird thing is, right after I read what SP2 has to offer, I literally yawned. And then I freaked out. STOP WATCHING ME!
RIP (not the graveyard way). You will finally get enough sleep.
And now I know how broken the comments system is here. I 'Reply'ed on a comment on the first page where it would have made some sense. Ignore this, do not low rank.
BMW, the comment said "Wake me up when OSX snow leopard [or something Apple-ish] comes out."
hahaha...i really yawned.
congratulations microtards.
The thing that I don't understand was when XP came out, people absolutely refused to switch to XP.. no one freakin' remembers that. XP at launch was a piece of shit compared to Vista at launch.
Furthermore, XP had the tendency to lock with ease. I have to literally try to lock up my computer with Vista, not just open Mozilla Firefox.
Well, I am glad they have not abandoned Vista completely. Since I had no choice but to buy a Vista computer, I will take all the service packs I can get for it.
