Microsoft details pre-beta release of Windows 7
We knew good and well Microsoft was gearing up to drop a pre-beta release of Windows 7 in developers' laps at its Professional Developers Conference, but now we're being treated to a host of details from Redmond itself. For starters, it's showing off (for the first time, mind you) its new Web applications for Office. As you'd expect, said apps are "lightweight versions of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote that are used from within standard web browsers." According to Ray Ozzie, chief software architect at Microsoft, it's aiming to bring "the best of the web to Windows, and the best of Windows to the web." 'Course, we're also told about improved navigation, a new taskbar (preview shown), support for multi-touch gestures, Device Stage and enhanced AV integration -- all things that have our interest decidedly piqued. Hit the read link for the full spill direct from the horse's mouth.

while i agree that some totally new awesome way of doing things would be cool, chances are it'll screw up. don't get me wrong, I love microsoft and just want to give bill gates a big hug, but i can easily see it happen that they try something new and no one buys it.
also, besides just wanting change, there's no real reason why it's gotta go...there's nothing really wrong with it is there? i mean, the taskbar is shit, i've never gotten that thing working properly (always hiding the wrong icons, no matter what registry hack i try), but i think fixing it would be better than replacing it..
I don't understand why they don't rip off the good ideas from Mac finder. For example, being able to expend folder(s) on the single finder window; spring load(?) folders; droping file to the program on the taskbar (instead of holding the file on the taskbar and wait for the program to open and then move up again to drop it. etc etc
Also being able to dynamicly setup the most used folder locations instead of going to powertoy to set them up is so much better. I was away from OSX for a few years and I am using it again. It's just better.
Is Windows 7 built on top of Vista, if so will it not have the same flaws and thus doom to fail in the same way?
I'm confused as to what's wrong with Vista, it's a solid OS.
I've been using it for a year, what have I been missing?
Vista has sold amazingly well....well over 100 million in fact. You call that a failure? You must have the highest expectations in the business world.
That's almost as ignorant as calling the iPod a failure.
At least the iPod does what is was designed for.
A lot of programs (and games) have trouble and most is do with the UAC. I still dual boot into XP a lot.
If Vista was fine, why is Windows 7 being marketed already so soon. Sorry but I see Vista as flawed and the 100 million you tout is due to PC/Notebook sales where OEM are basically forced to include, the numbers is not boxed sales.
I want to know, with Vista's troubles why would anyone want to even look at Windows 7. What is it improving and why can it not be implemented into Vista
where did you hear this? the apple commercials? wow people are dumb if they ever listen to a word those cowards say.
>At least the iPod does what is was designed for.
Barely. It takes my touch about 6 seconds just to populate the clock or settings screen after I hit the button on the home screen.
@Mark
Control panel --> user accounts --> turn off UAC --> problem solved.
I have played almost all games released in the past 3 years, both DX9 and 10 (and older ones) on both my 64-bit and 32-bit Vista machines and they run just fine.
Mark-
I look at it this way. If Vista has some problems and Windows 7 is built on it, then Vista has given Microsoft some experience to solve those problems and Windows 7 should be a significant improvement.
schmitty338-
I agree that 100 million hardly sounds like a failure. But I still suspect that Vista sales haven't been the success Microsoft was hoping for. A quick search turns up an insightful if dated article from cnet, dated September 2007 which says this:
"Standalone unit sales of Vista at U.S. retail stores were down 59.7 percent compared with Windows XP, during each product's first six months on store shelves, according to NPD Group. In terms of revenue, sales are also down, but the drop has been less steep, at 41.5 percent. The findings largely mirror the sales pattern NPD saw for Vista during its first week on the market in January. "

If I go simply by my own personal assessment, I have found no compelling reason to upgrade to Vista and I know many people who feel the same. That hardly makes Vista a failure but it does say something about an operating system which competes with it's former self, a former self which is apparently pretty damn good.
I expect Windows 7 to be the system I am ready to upgrade to. For now, I'm fine without Vista on my PC.
It looks an awful lot like KDE.
This looks like a home run, in a Fenway park home run sorta way.
I'm planning to buy Vista64 and replace my xp64 on my machine, should I wait for this one? is it to late to change?
...umm..how can anybody answer that question since nobody outside of MS has ever used the OS, and it's not even out of beta stage?
So, to answer your question, maybe?
I think Microsoft should release this as a free update to all Vista users, imo.
Vista, while I maintain a love/hate relationship with it, feels like MS's "whoopsie" with 7 being their second try.

In regards to delays, have you forgotten that it took OsX exactly one month to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.5.1 due to a major f-up and that Vista didnt hit Sp1 till well after a year?? Hmm maybe cut windows a break, I use vista, I love vista, I agree some hardware doesnt run vista so well, but unlike Apple, windows supports all hardware and doesnt force you to purchase a 3000 desktop(that is 1000$ in parts). I mean come one besides their operating system what do they have? They dropped the IBM G6 ball for intel, and they use 9400 video cards hahaha I will stick to my 8800gtx or gtx 280 for less than u charge your customer, and install osx on my pc and xbench 200 points higher than your 5000$$ desktop
Apple = Sux
@balls
how dare you find common ground. what will we do without teh flaymwarz?
I like balls...
Ermm ... I mean his non-bias... yeah ... non-bias ... exactly. *runs off*
Here's another article on the PDC and first impressions

As a side, a few thoughts -
1) As the link states, and as most of us know, this is WIP. The UI will definitely change/evolve.
2) I see a move towards performance. If your machine hasn't been put together by orcs in Mordor, it should run 7 - and well at that.
3) The last few articles on engadget seem devoid of the cocky anti-MS attitude we've gotten used to. Does that mean our feedback is actually being read?
Also, how about keeping this objective, and not comparing oranges and other fruits? ;)
So, let me get this straight... engadget liveblogs even the smallest Apple announcements - and follows with 10 related posts. But similar announcements announcement about an operating system that is 10x more popular get one small entry. Nice.
So very true. I'm sick of always reading about "maybe Apple will do this, or not, wait a couple of minutes!..." and then "YEAH! They released the iSomething!". But when I want to read about Windows Vista's successor, all I can see is a crappy screenshot.
I'm sorry. I keep trying to read this, but Vista keeps crashing.
it must suck to so stupid you keep using an OS, which, in your words, "keeps crashing." Good luck ... you're gonna need it.
Wow quit the bitching about coverage of Apple events.
Take a fucking look around. There are only 70+ posts in this story.
An APPLE story gains about 100+ posts if not more than 200+
Doesn't take a genius to figure out where the money is. Apple posts = traffic = revenue.
And before you bitch at me I love Vista and can't wait for Windows 7.
That's because at least half of the comments in an Apple post are people bitching about Apple posts. If these people hate Apple enough that they really want less coverage the best thing they can do is not comment and start burning up the Microsoft posts with comments.
what the hell? why does the taskbar look like that? it looks like microsoft half-fast their ideas and made a ugly rectangular taskbar with no style at all, whatsoever! not even that, the buttons don't have text, just icons O_o what if you had multiple folders open?
the classic theme is a lot better than that!
guess MS Paint finally came in handy this time. ;)
The picture clearly shows that if you click IE, for example, it springs up with any IE windows that are open - with titles. The same would go for explorer windows/folders.
Currently, I'm loving Live Mesh and Silverlight, and I'd love to give this a try. The glassy look is just beautiful. I don't care if all I get to do is browe the internet. Please release a public Beta Microsoft.
cool
Can't wait to get my hands on it. http://www.youtechno.info
