Ubuntu 8.10 now available for download
Right on schedule, it looks like Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex is now available. Linux fans should look forward to performance gains and a new Connection Manager with 3G support, as well as the ability to install from USB drives and built-in BBC content availability. Torrents should be popping now -- and if you haven't hit up the 'bu yet, what're you waiting for?

that's my wireless chip as well, though I can honestly say that I've never had problems with it (I've owned it since GG).
I LOVE the 6 month release schedule. There's nothing I like more than dashed hopes. Now where did I put that other hard drive....
apt get +1
I think (K)Ubuntu is one of the best OSes to transition from Windows to the linux world. Once you get used to the features, support and the community you'll find it real easy to muck around with other distros until you can find (or customize) whatever you want.
Speaking of the community, I think its matured a lot since the usenet days when linux gurus were incredibly difficult to deal with and would chew your head up for asking what they perceived were stupid Qs. Again the ubuntu forums have very good answers for things that you need to find.
However, if you *want* windows, you should use windows, nothing wrong with that. If you switch to another OS, it will be different - its, uh, another OS? No point in comparing 1 OS to the other, I feel it's highly subjective.
I haven't switched to Ubanto because of driver issues I had with Feisty. Also, I need to use CS3 and Solidworks.
I'd say double boot or VM is the way to go but anyway.
Driver issues tend to be solved in the time...
A lot of work has been done since you should give it a try again :)
Solidworks worked fine a few years ago in vmware. It wasn't exactly extremely fast, but it wasn't too slow either. Things might have improved now, with all those fancy new virtual machines that support 3d acceleration.
What's Ubanto?
I've been running 8.10RC since last week and aside from a kernel issue (entirely my own fault) its been running fine. Seems faster than Hardy although I haven't actually tested it.
PROTIP: If its taking too long to dowload....use a torrent, at least it let's you pause it. If you're upgrading, don't use the upgrade manager...download (by torrent if you wish) the alternate install CD, pop it in and it'll let you run the upgrade off that.
I have been "using" since alpha 5.. ralalalalah
At the expence of display resolution i might add. Nice to see fglrx and Xorg 7.4 working together now.
