USB Port is neither USB nor Port, just amazing
With the word "Port" now restricted to use by Portuguese wine makers and kin, California-based Peltier Station was forced to come up with this bit of inspirational naming for its dessert wine: USB. Look closely and you'll see that the binary tree actually translates to "Peltier Station" with roots sinking deep into the universally recognized symbol (in Nerdistan) of the USB port. Who cares how it tastes, the packaging from 6 West Design is pure genius. Backside front after the break.

Damn. That's pretty nifty.
Yes!! Now I can really plug into a good drink!
I'm not so sure a wine named after a technology item would be any good, not that their consumer target would know any better (that includes me)
by the way Portuguese call it Porto not port, not that it matters, just saying
Wow its a USB 1.0 that's a good vintage year
@Ayman
Vintage actually means "year", so you don't have to say the year part. Just "that's a good vintage"
@Kizorblade: Wine snob.
@NHAnimator: jealous of the wine snob :)
@Whoever really cares: The term vintage has a different meaning when used to describe port wines. A vintage is declared for only the best years (or for any year that doesn't suck, depending on the shipper). So, it is handy to state the "vintage year" when talking about port.
Or so says Wikipedia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_wine
you mean vine?
finally something i can drink from this website....
To be served at every nerds wedding, birthday, anniversary, (name event)...
ABSOLUTE USB!
You meant Absolut. ;)
From my hometown! Lodi, CA
Lodi has that water park right?
and those terrorists a while back right? and a ccr song? what a kickass place
Now I just need to know where I can buy some of this! Anyone? Anyone? Hello? Is this thing on?!
Following the links through you end up here...
http://www.peltierstation.com/
LOL Novel.
I'll take a case, or should that be hub :P
If this comes to wine.woot.com I will have to buy it!
A wine after my very own heart.
So is this wine actually Port? If so that's a shame... could have chose a better tasting wine for such an awesome package, but I suppose it is a perfect match. I like how the cap seal looks like Helmet from the the front, or Darth Vadar, take your pick.
It's actually not a port, it's just a dessert wine made with Zinfandel grapes. Not all dessert wines are port.
Sorry, that should have read "It's not NECESSARILY a port..."
Reading the "read" link though, and then reading the back label closer, it probably is a port.
And Port isn't wine. It starts it's fermentation process like wine, but then is stopped short and fortified with brandy.
I like Zinfandel wine, but yes thanks for the little lesson on wine and what Port is, never knew that. I just know I don't care for it much.
Hah I thought the same thing, the cap looks straswarsy. Porto is a region in Portugal, much like Champagne is of France. Oporto is used extensively for cooking due to its sweetness.
Where is it possible to get this winein a store outside of California? This is genius;)
Drunk geeks, home, alone. Shweet.
Haha. That's the real binary tree!
Is it just me...or did anyone else get the mental image of Darth Vader when looking at that picture.
I thought of Helmet, but same thing, it's the top of the bottle that does it.
Yes same thing here...
I thought "Maker's Mark".
The closest place to me that sells this is 1 hour and 33 mins away.
Time for a road trip!
wow, simply stunning design...
Yeah ... and all of them probably trademarked!!
Still, before the lawyers get called in, I'd like a couple of these geek bottles made by geeks(?).
Though I don't suppose the product quality matches the packaging ... or maybe it does!
The retail outlet finder only shows one country, and it's not the one I'm in :(
$25, about £15 at the moment. Quite expensive for a port, but tempting.
$25 for a port is not that bad at all, well perhaps it is for first production. Lodi has been putting out some very good juice as of late, the Zins coming from there have been very good. It's a heartier grape so the climate there produces fantastic Zins, going on my past history with wine from Lodi and my love of port, this may be a no-brainer purchase for me. I love "fortified" wines and ports! A nice cigar and a nice port, people love their scotch, I love me my ports. Taylor 20 or 30, is velvet in a bottle...
Heck even Australlia, makes great "fortified" wines.
Looks awesome, but not exactly my style.
Now, who's going to step up and make a USB Porter for us beer guys?
That is an awesome idea.
I love porto! I still have a 1969 bottle in tha cave but im quite happy with a 10years old.
Port wine is amazing (the portuguese). Some bottles may cost up to 20.000 euros...
WANT!
i bought a bottle of ubuntu wine a while ago. gotta love wine under ubuntu.
Hi Guys,
I am the assistant winemaker at Peltier Station. My husband is a
computer geek :) and reads Engadget everyday, so he sent me the link
to this. If you go to our website www.peltierstation.com you can get
info on where to get this "port". This is a really great dessert wine
by the way (of course I am biased), and really priced very well.
Enjoy!
Please add more states for your shipping options!
How about a discount for up penny pinchers?
Talk amongst yourselves....
you know, no big whup
I thought of Darth Vader when I first looked at this bottle.
Just to clear some things up:
1) It is not Port. Port only comes from Portugal (and only the Douro Valley of Portugal). It is fortified wine from California. Nitpicky, yes, but it's still the case.
2) Port, and this USB stuff is still wine, unlike someone said above. They were right in that Port is a fortified wine (as a subset of wine), with distilled grape spirits (brandy) added to stop the fermentation process (yeast can't convert sugar to alcohol if the alcohol level of their environment gets too high) which leaves residual sugar (hence sweet wine) and boosts the overall alcohol content to higher than usual for wine.
3) ZInfandel is not a grape found in real Port from Portugal, they use Touriga Nacional (most important) as well as a few others (e.g. Tinta Roriz, known as Tempranillo in Spain).
4) A "10 year Tawny" or "20 year Tawny" is not actually made from grapes coming from a single vintage that's 10 or 20 years old. Rather, these age statements reflect a blend of vintages that together TASTE like the Port is 10 or 20 years old. Vintage Port is made from grapes from one vintage (or year's harvest) exclusively and will have the actual year in which the harvest was made on the bottle. Vintage Port is much more expensive than the blended stuff and more rare--there are years in which no vintage port is made at all, only the best years get turned into vintage port.
The above doesn't mean that this USB stuff is bad by any means, just different from Port. Hell, I've even had decent Port-style fortified wine made here in good ol' Illinois.
"Just amazing"? Clever yes, amazing no. I know I'm going to get voted down but My God Engadget, you really need to get out more. It's a drink. Heheh, clever label. Move on!
I call branding rights for .CAB Compressed & Stored Cabernet Grapes. And 1/8" Stereo Jack Daniel's. And Power Supply Energy Drinks. And Cook Coke Crack en-Crip-tion hard drugs.

I thought it was Darth Vader at first glance also. Awesome design even if you aren't a cpm vintage geek.
