pureSilicon's rugged
Renegade SSDs may be tough as nails, but if you're lookin' to start up your own video-on-demand server or online transaction processing center, you may want to look Samsung's way. The outfit has just announced that it's mass producing 25GB and 50GB Enterprise SSDs, which are designed for "performance-optimized server applications." Sammy proclaims that the SLC-based drives have around "twice the random write performance of its standard 32GB and 64GB SLC SSDs," and better still, they consume less than 25% of the power of a 2.5-inch 15k SAS HDD. More specifically, this duo will provide 100 times the number of IOPS per watt as a typical 15K 2.5-inch SAS HDD and five times the number of IOPS per dollar as a 10K 2.5-inch SCSI HDD. Not surprisingly, Samsung doesn't bother dishing out prices, but you can expect to pay top dollar given the abuse these are built to withstand.
Imagine 5 of these in a raid...
Drools.
*Imagines the price*
O_O
Let me know when I can get one for $300 ;-)
Me too! :)
Sorry but it doesn't impress me when 25% power savings are compared to a 15k SCSI, unless Im missing something very important.
It uses less than 25% total power of said 2.5" drive.
It is a common component for modern blade servers. Typically 2 of these per blade and several blades per rack. So the savings do add up.
The point your missing is that you are going to need a lot of these to make up the storage capacity that a 2.5" 15k drive can deliver. If you need 300GB of storage, the 25% energy savings isn't going to mean a lot if you need 6 to 12 of these drives to get it.
Will they ever give me up? Or let me down?
Because
it can't
and
it won't
and
ya don't stop
(solid state rockin' a sure shot)
I think it's more of a junior senior reference?
bad boy 4 life?
How does this compare to Intels' Enterprise SSD?
They called Intel's Enterprise a GARBAGE SCOW!!!!
We need an Engadget Swag contest for like 10 of these XD
