i dont get what this is a screen shot of
It's a screen shot of election coverage, can't you see it?
The 3G icon shows an arrow symbol probably signifying tethering.
EDIT:
I am stupid, nevermind.
Thank god- I've been hesitant to take my old Dash out of my car in case I needed to use it as a modem while waiting for this solution to worked out!
Okay, now where's the walkthrough for the iPhone?
Oh.. Wait... That's why I switch to the G1...
Its a screen shot of the browzer on the G1
It was just a matter of time. I mean, I can even tether on my jailbroken iPhone with PDAnet. In fact that's how I'm commenting on Engadget right now.
damn, if only t-mobile's 3G was in nashville....i am so tempted.
Not to be a fan boy, but i already do this with my touch pro on evdo. I average about 600kbs, any word on the speed of tmobiles network?
No, if you were phanbouy, phanbouy fan would mock you to death with incisive sarcasm!
Good you get a cookie. Thanks for letting us know.
Nokia users have been doing this since 2002, so big deal you tether in 2008 or figured out what a bluetooth headset is sometime in the last 2 years. The rest of the world has been doing this stuff since the early 2000s.
As an addendum, nobody does this with a USB cable either. We all use Bluetooth to tether.
I use USB to tether my desktop when my POS cable internet service goes out (about twice a week). No wifi/bluetooth on the desktop.
SWEEEEEEEEEET! Man i love my G1! My girlfiend "accidentally" threw it across the room last! It didnt get a single scratch though! WOOT WOOT! This is just what i was waitin for!
Grammar Nazi: You left out the ex- in front of girlfriend.
Is she still your girlfriend? :-)
Hmm, I hope she's hot. How did she accidentally throw it at the wall? Anyway, The important thing is that the G1 was OK.
well it would make sense that your hand threw it across the room...
lolol he means that his girlfriend is his hand
his material never gets old he's like the gallagher of engadget
smash another watermelon!
lolol phanbouy fan's being sarcastic
there's nothing clever than saying the opposite of what you actually mean!
someone get him to open mic night!
is it a coincidence the screen shot is apple related?
Yah and the page the browser is on is "coincidentally" on an Apple picture..
Seems quite complicated but it's better than nothing. Wonder if anyone got it to work in 3g yet, seems like most of the people who tested it don't have 3g. Definitely looks like it's possible for a developer to make it a lot more polished given they also make the necessary desktop component to make it work.
It has to go through the Usb debugging mode to work so there is some possibility of Google locking it down after an update. Doesn't look like Android has usb APIs built in yet (besides from standard mass storage mounting and unmounting) so going through the usb debugging mode is the only way to make it work for now.
Hah, pretty ingenious (and simple) work around. As for everyone talking about the screenshot being of a page with an Apple product displayed? I encourage you to notice that while there is an Apple product, the zoom in is of the rocket founder guy's shaved/waxed chest.
Is anyone working on a Wireless Router mode for the G1? I have a T-Mobile Wing, and while it's only EDGE, I have a Windows Mobile program to turn it into a Wifi router so that any WiFi capable device, say a WiFi SD card for my camera, or a Nintendo DS, can access the data connection. If Android was able to do this, I'd get a G1 in a heartbeat!
You know, after this, I wouldn't be surprised if the Engadget editors just try to put Apple things into as many posts as possible to see how many people can spot it/complain...
I hope it'll work all the same if I put in a goofy hour instead of some serious minutes.
Your avatar makes me happy.
I don't understand why T-Mobile is against tethering on this phone in the first place. I had a T-Mobile branded WinMo phone (the Dash) that came with Tethering software preinstalled and instructions on how to use it included in the box.
That said, I doubt I'll bother setting it up on the G1. I used to use it on my Dash sometimes when I wanted to browse the internet but didn't have any WiFi, but the web browser on the G1 is good enough that I'd rather just use that than going through the trouble of wiring it up to my laptop.
@chefgon_ign
T-mobile was not against tethering (all of their other phones, including the 3g handsets do it), it was simply that Android was not built with tethering app as part of the OS. In the press release for the G1 T-mobile even stated that they wold not have an issue with a tethering app.
Using NetShare on my iPhone.... But I have to set all my apps (Browser / IM) to use SOCKS Proxy.... I preferred tethering on my old Nokia 6300.... It was fast ans easy and I could use USB....
Will not work on x64 OS's becase there is no driver.. i'd been trying to run adb on Vista x64 for a bit and it looks like its requierd for this :*( sadness...
My seven year old Ericsson (from before it was called Sony Ericsson) can do this through bluetooth.
No 3G offcourse, but the fact that seven year old tech can do this withouth installing third-party applications (it all works native on OS X, I do not need any extra pplication), on bluetooth (unlike the G1 with it's USB connection) and that even my grandpa can install it, makes the G1 a sad panda.
Anyone in a 3G enabled city confirm that this works?
It works. Both on 3G and Edge. =]
Man, you cannot get a G1 in the UK for love nor money.
I've tried 4 separate stores, not a single one. On UK launch day between 3 stores in Liverpool they had a total 25 units.
big deal, i have been able to do this for years with my windows mobile phone
Tethering? I've been doing this for 2 years with my Nokia E50 via Bluetooth. Any modern cellphone which doesn't permit wireless tethering is garbage. It's pretty sad that the "open" G1 turns out to be so closed without modification. Bluetooth tethering should've been a simple no-brainer of a feature.
Along with all of the other features. They've specifically stated that the bluetooth stack is incomplete in 1.0. Tethering will come.
I've played with the app. It certainly works, but it's got latency issues that the author is working on.
Hey guys i made a pretty definitive guide for us linux users, please check it out and tell me what you think :

there is a USB cable made by a French company that allows you to tether any model phone (Blackberry, Win Mobile, Symbian) when you connect it to any notebook (Windows, MAC, Linux).
the nice thing about it is that it takes few seconds for the smart cable to configure your phone and SIM and connects you to the internet. there is absolutely nothing for you to configure your PC or the mobile phone. in addition the cable has 1GB of memory (can be used as a flash memory key) and it charges your phone from your notebook... I think the price is about $50 but I'm not sure....
