Manufacturing delays said to be slowing XPERIA X1 sales
As you might have noticed, there's already plenty of Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1s out in the wild by this point, but there's apparently not quite as many as SE would like, and it's laying the blame on some slightly mysterious manufacturing delays. According to IDG News, Sweden, Germany and the U.K. have been hardest hit by the delays, but Sony Ericsson isn't about to get much more specific than that about the matter, saying simply that a lack of "certain materials" is causing the shortages. The company has said, however, that more phones should be shipping into Sweden in the next few days, with the U.K. and Germany set to get additional shipments in the next few weeks. It also says that planned launches in other countries like Switzerland, France, and Singapore, to name a few, won't be affected by the delays, and that the phone is still on track to be released in the US sometime in November.[Via the::unwired]

Waiting for this phone...
deyanimay @ Nov 4th 2008 1:13PM
don't hold your breath
KevinJ @ Nov 4th 2008 2:39PM
Yeah I'm waiting to and its getting tiring. Now I'm hearing $1k figures for this phone!!!! I mean WTF! Likely it will take ATT a whole year to get this phone to get a discount and unlocked from Sony it may cost between $800 and $1k considering their latest 905 unlocked release, I might as well give up waiting for something better and get a iPhone. We've been waiting and waiting and likely will be dissapointed. Other phones like the Black Berry Storm, HTC HD, Garmin phone, others are just myth in the US and who knows when you can get a hold of one. Gizmondo and others keep showing all these phones we can't have for months on end. The whole thing is tiring.
iEye @ Nov 4th 2008 4:11PM
Indeed the waiting is painful
Apple is the only one that delivers...
iPhone is the last word on premium cell phone...

HTC did a good job with this phone even though SE is getting to put their brand on it.
Neil @ Nov 4th 2008 1:49PM
You do know all the design and engineering work was done by Sony Ericsson, don't you?
fh @ Nov 4th 2008 4:53PM
@Neil:
Actually, HTC is the ODM for the X1 (and this has been well-known for the better part of a year now), so for all intents and purposes HTC designed and engineered the X1 while SE took care of branding and marketing.
iEye @ Nov 4th 2008 1:14PM
Wow, I did not realize that "suck" is considered a material....
phanbouy @ Nov 4th 2008 1:17PM
now now, don't be so hard on yourself
Patriks7 @ Nov 4th 2008 1:18PM
No no.. we're not talking about the iPhone..
Daniel @ Nov 4th 2008 1:17PM
I was wondering when you guys were finally going to comment on this. I thought I was gonna have to chop an Apple logo on the damn thing to get some news. Not a word when the Nov. 3 press release was missed, either.
simon @ Nov 4th 2008 1:20PM
It would be silly for any company to make a big press announcement about a product today. People are focussed on the election and everything else will get pushed aside.
smib @ Nov 4th 2008 1:44PM
I can't put into words how much more I care about this phone than the election.
ILoveApple @ Nov 4th 2008 1:40PM
Dear Simon,
There's a world outside the U.S. of A.

WHAT?! There is a world outside of the US of A?! That is so hard to believe :(

I'm not in the USA, however the election is in the USA and the SE announcement was supposed to be about USA X1 availability.

I am looking forward to this phone as well, but right now I am quite happy with my Tilt which has been serving me well for over a year now.(with no need to reset it) Once it comes out though, I do plan to use my next upgrade on it. The smaller screen/smaller keys on the Touch pro did not impress me. If the feel of the X1 is better(which is supposed to be its selling point) then I will pick that up.
Burn @ Nov 4th 2008 1:28PM
SE has been promising units over here in the Netherlands since half October. Not one single unit has shipped. First week 43, week 44, 45, now week 47, maybe... ugh.
xispec @ Nov 4th 2008 1:30PM
hope it's worth the wait on US release Dx hope it's released sometime soon too >.
HemanC @ Nov 4th 2008 1:31PM
I won't be getting this one unless ATT subsidy it. Fuze is my top choice for now.
Leindurstit @ Nov 4th 2008 1:35PM
Did they mention about how apple is slashing production of iPhone by 40%?
ai11237 @ Nov 4th 2008 1:44PM
The hype is going down. Its expected at this point
Johan S @ Nov 4th 2008 1:56PM
Probably the LCD .. which is why I know I'm going to check the thing for bad pixels on day zero.
Valicore @ Nov 4th 2008 1:59PM
This phone has been so desired by so many people for so long, but between the specs being inaccurate on the SE website about 1700 band support, the delays, and even more delays, I think a lot of people just decided "Fuck it, I'll find something not so vaporous."
Dmitri Rezaev @ Nov 4th 2008 2:23PM
Awful phone. If I wanted a Windows Mobile phone, I would just continue using my HTC Wizard

Here comes the FAILDOZER...
http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-professional-news/274843/paul-reviews-the-sony-ericsson-xperia-x1/
"...what we have here is a pretty standard WinMo build. That said, it's stable, fast and with plenty of memory and a speedy processor on hand it runs superbly. HTC's Task Manager and TouchFlo kinetic scrolling are useful additions and as a productivity device, the X1 is a great machine. Contrary to what we have seen on pre-release devices, the orientation switch on sliding out the keyboard is nice and quick and I personally have no complaints on that front..."

better hope it's real! i can't wait any freaking LONGER!

I cringe every time I see your byline...What basic, elementary school rule of grammar are you gonna mangle, next? What is it with you (and Murph) and your inability to get simple verb and object number to match?
"...there's apparently not quite as many as SE would like..."
...there ARE...not...as many as SE would like..." Or, if you like, THERE'RE...not as many as SE would like...
I see this all the time...slang is cool. Attitude is necessary. But "hick ain't in" when it's not at all obvious that you're doing it deliberately, for effect.
Seriously, man, if you're paid to write, please' do it correctly--NOT as if you're some Podunk, uneducated hick. I look to Engadget as le plus ultra site for technically expert, informed, well-written copy--with that trademark wry wit, creative, cannily descriptive content, and devil-may-care attitude--but that ambitious gourmet cake friggin' falls flat if you don't get the very basic ingredients right.
Food for thought...
att employee @ Nov 5th 2008 6:39AM
spoke to our sony erricson rep and he confirmed that att turned down the x1 because of the price.
Cheesy @ Nov 5th 2008 4:07PM
got mine last friday in Switzerland for around 800$
it's great! best WM phone ever made in my opinion, and i had quite a few.
it's fast, responsive, superior to many other devices in build quality, very fast internet thanks to new opera build. soundquality is awsome too! equals with an ipod in my opinin, which isn't that awsome anyway (compared to Cowon) but you can at least enjoy your music on a WM phone!
and Dmitri it is NOT awful. I was glad to sell my Diamond for this one :)
Kbrag @ Nov 5th 2008 7:37PM
just had my cousin by one in london today for $1050 ( a little over priced i know...idc) shipped today getting it in the next three days.
IWantX1 @ Nov 6th 2008 10:23PM
any ideas if this phone will make it too ATT SOMETIME before xmas???
a US based company already has them on sale for shipment... below 900 but... that's still outrageous
IWantX1 @ Nov 6th 2008 10:25PM
but the phone will still work as it's unlocked right? as long as you have a SIM from ATT?
