It's not apt to ever go on sale in America (okay, so maybe there's a sliver of a sliver of a chance), but HTC's Touch HD is now on sale for fortunate Britons with a fair amount of poundage to spare. The drop-dead gorgeous WinMo 6.1 handset can be procured right now for £514.99 ($821) sans contract, but if you're a North American mulling an import, you should obviously tack on a few more bills to that. I'm going to sound like a broken record here, but it's an absolute joke that this phone won't be officially released in America. This makes absolutely no sense to me. This phone would be such a competitor to the Iphone and the rest of the touch screen phone field. For months I was holding off hopes until this was released in America, and then the news that it wasn't came crashing down weeks ago. If you can't achieve 3G speeds with this phone purchased unlocked, then it is absolutely pointless to pay so much for the bragging rights of owning this beauty.
WMPOWERUSER mentioned the below:
"1) AT&T demanded that the HD stay out of USA, to prevent any competition with the iPhone 3G. In return they would carry the much delayed AT&T Fuze. This is supported by the absense of the HTC Touch Diamond on AT&T, indicating they do not welcome good competition to their favourite phone.
2) HTC did not want to draw attention from their new G1 android phone, and therefore decided not to release in USA.
3) HTC thinks the investment would be wasted, due to the local dominance of the iPhone in USA, unlike in Europe, where the seemed to have accelerated its release."
I imagine the iPhone for AT&T and the G1 for T-Mobile are the reasons this phone is not coming to the US. Spec for spec, this phone makes those two (and all others for that matter) look pathetic.
As soon as the "rumored" CDMA version finally comes to light, then you will see it released here, since Sprint would want to get their hands all over it, and claim exclusive (assuming Verizion doesn't get to it first).

Im a huge phone enthusiast, i barely keep a phone for more the 2 or 3 months. Im really debating whether or not to pony up 1000 bucks for this mile stone of a phone. This phone is the pinnicle of what ive been yearning for years, every spec of tech seems fitting to my desire, but just to clarify..It wont do 3g speeds correct? I had the iphone( 1st gen) and the edge speed wasnt that bad.

That's the only thing that's holding me back. This has the potential of being my first unlocked phone purchase, but that one missing feature is killing me.
Your right, this phone is absolute perfection otherwise. It has it all. At least until Tegra is out.

like most expensive phones in the UK .... They're free if you buy them on contract, of which most people do as its cheaper to run. I just got the HTC touch diamond as soon as it came out... phone Free and for only for £24.50 a month from dialaphone with unlimited txts n mins.!!. scoreeee.!!!!
wtf 25 a month for a contract with unlimited speech AND txt ??? thats 40€
that is unfair- in Germany u gotta pay around 110€ for that!
and it may come to Brazil like in Q2 2009 (we don't even have the Touch Diamond / Pro!), at 1900 BRL unlocked/pre-subsidies ($900 USD, at today's rate, ridiculously high taxes included)
