MSI's 10-inch Wind U100 falls to $349 at Best Buy
In an apparent effort to move every last unit before ASUS drops a $200 Eee PC in 2009, Best Buy has knocked $50 off of MSI's 10-inch Wind U100. The Atom N270-powered netbook now checks in at just $349, a price that just seems to fit so much better with the term "netbook" than, say, $500+. The real question, however, is: three fifty low enough for you?

Is that with Windows? If so, I'll grab the linux version for even more incredible savings.
Coolty @ Nov 5th 2008 7:56AM
And, more SSD space if they do what eeepc is doing between the linux and windows versions.
Loonyx @ Nov 5th 2008 11:38AM
msi doesn't have a "linux" version :( or i'd get one too o.O
Sim and Sim @ Nov 5th 2008 7:37AM
nope.. not low enough to turn me off the linux version of the HP Mini...
Corey O @ Nov 5th 2008 7:42AM
I say give it to me for free so I can right a review on it...I'll give it back...promise ;)
harry @ Nov 5th 2008 7:56AM
If you can't even spell "right" I don't think so...
iEye @ Nov 5th 2008 7:43AM
$349 is not $199...
keep that price cuts coming...
I for one, welcome our sub $200 netbook....
Coolty @ Nov 5th 2008 7:57AM
It's not an apple either. Shouldn't you be complaining about that?
James @ Nov 5th 2008 8:02AM
You know who I think will be really pleased with this price? That DAMN LOCHNESS MONSTER! I told you already monster, I don't have no damn tree-fitty!
iEye @ Nov 5th 2008 8:01AM
You can easily install OSX on a wind... Then with a few decals and logo-stripping turn this baby into a one of a kind AppleTop!
happy_penguin @ Nov 5th 2008 2:23PM
That actually sounds like an interesting project. I'd love to triple boot Linux, Mac and "Wind"-ows on this. :)
BananaBoat @ Nov 5th 2008 7:44PM
I agree with $199. I only want one of these to fulfill my childhood fantasies of having a tiny spy laptop of doom to carry in my pocket. That said, the Iphone is pretty freaking close.....and it was 199 with a contract (I think. Maybe it was 299, it's been a few months).
Rayray2012 @ Nov 5th 2008 7:44AM
$300 is the sweetspot for me. All these netbooks should be no more than $300.
Josh @ Nov 5th 2008 8:55PM
I need about tree fity.
vance @ Nov 5th 2008 7:58AM
It's the HP Mini for me. (the Linux version.) The keyboard alone is worth a little more money.
slarity @ Nov 5th 2008 8:18AM
If you configure the hp mini to the same specs as the wind, you get a 60gb hard drive instead of a 120 with pretty much everything else the same, and it will cost you $175 more.
Ill take the wind! besides, I like the white wind.
KyleK @ Nov 5th 2008 8:04AM
And in Germany it's still 370€ :( Why?!
ynx @ Nov 5th 2008 5:42PM

bidur @ Nov 5th 2008 8:15AM

Apple magic @ Nov 5th 2008 8:28AM
I just hope NOKIA hurry and create there IPhone equivalent fast. Apple the technological tyranny who's Steve tyrant Jobs places the interests of his small oligarchy over the best interests of the general population to produce purpose crippled consumer goods that only serve to spread anguish and discontent among the masses. To hell with Apple and Long live the cloners who can put right the shortcomings.
Hopefully NOKIA or whoever will create a multi touch enabled device that has all the features 'you should expect' from a phone. not a gimmicky toy with a flashy UI which is all the IPhone really is.
Apples foray into the business world is nothing short of a JOKE!!!!!!!, what when just to send my IPhone created expense report back to my desktop machine I have to send it via email to a non-trusted 3rd party server (they then perhaps steel my details, nice) only to round trip in plain text back to my machine over the internet. Grab me a sick bag fast! F@?K apple. Common NOKIA A$$ F@?K em now, destroy apple... but hire there designers!!

htd @ Nov 5th 2008 8:35AM
where is the 6 cell version?
Jeebus @ Nov 6th 2008 1:16PM
It got left behind. It was too heavy.
Ian @ Nov 5th 2008 8:56AM
It's probably still being sold at regular price, or around $450 or something. If you lower the price of one unit, you need to lower the price of the others so that the price differences still make sense.
Dave @ Nov 5th 2008 9:42AM
Damn you MSI, trying to get my tree-fitty....
MyTallest @ Nov 5th 2008 9:46AM
So the specs say x3100 graphics. Dose anyone have one of these to verify this?
Thanks
phobic99 @ Nov 5th 2008 12:38PM
The one I used to have (sold on ebay yesterday for $530) had the Intel GMA950. I'd suspect this one does too. As a matter of fact, I don't think there are any netbooks that have anything other than the GMA950 except that Asus N10J (nVidia 9300).
Keisha Kornbread @ Nov 5th 2008 10:42AM
I need it to be lower. There are other's out there at that price already.....
aldo @ Nov 5th 2008 11:37AM
An intel dual core atom wiht a AMD 790GX chipest (integrated video from ATI) will be my netbook dream machine
Loonyx @ Nov 5th 2008 11:40AM
The price cut oh saavy engadget readers is because they want to sell every last one of the first gen U100's before they release the U120. So please Go. Bai. Now! TYVM so i can get my HSDPA 6cell U120 sooner. k thx.
John @ Nov 5th 2008 11:50AM
Yes the price is now $349, however, I was lucky enough to get one at $379.99 a few weeks ago before they REMOVED THE BLUETOOTH CHIP! This version has no bluetooth adapter, and according to site specs, no Gigabit ethernet port anymore either. While I doubt the loss of gigabit, the bluetooth loss makes it that much more difficult to connect to this netbook, requiring more spending for those that want a fully spec'd netbook.
I'd prefer mine with internal bluetooth than one where I have to buy yet ANOTHER adapter.
Matthew @ Nov 5th 2008 11:56AM
Picked up an Acer Aspire One a couple of months ago at Best Buy for this same price. The Wind was $500 back then, so it was no contest. Maximum PC's current issue has reviews of these two plus one of the EeePC's. They picked the Aspire One, but one of the main reasons was the $150 price difference. Otherwise, they thought those two were pretty close (Wind has a bigger screen, though).
Love my Aspire One, but probably would have got the MSI Wind had it been $350 back then.
Robert @ Nov 5th 2008 1:03PM
Whew, tempting. I ordered a Dell Mini 9 on 10/24 and I'm still waiting for it. $350 is certainly much cheaper than the $500 I spent...
digitallysick @ Nov 5th 2008 1:06PM
Running leopard on mine, love it, this is a steal of a deal
Rut-ro @ Nov 5th 2008 1:34PM
You know with the 25% live cash back, you can pick one up off ebay for $299.
raging_hamsterx @ Nov 5th 2008 2:36PM
but will it run Mojave?
Rahabib @ Nov 5th 2008 3:07PM
6 cell battery and we are talking
patrick @ Nov 5th 2008 4:24PM
6-cell battery please.
DrVanostran @ Nov 6th 2008 6:50AM
Funny.. yesterday it was listed as having the 6-cell. Now today it says 3.
El_Tiffy @ Nov 5th 2008 5:51PM
I still don't get why people want netbooks. The screen is too small to be productive on, and if its just for checking email (which you can only do at Wi-Fi hotspots - the vast majority of netbooks don't have 3g/other network support) then why not spring for a bigger laptop you can actually use?
bebop @ Nov 5th 2008 7:24PM
A lot of people have a desktop for productivity, and a netbook for mobility. The netbook is cheaper, smaller, and lighter than a notebook. It just depends on how much you want to spend, and how much you want to drag around with you, and of course what you really use it for.
Montey @ Nov 5th 2008 9:00PM
It's a cheap way to get portable entertainment, some internet browsing, email, and light gaming for cheap with a bigger screen than you would find on your cell phone.
Vineet Madan @ Nov 5th 2008 6:32PM
$300 is where it's at. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if there were last minute pre-holiday deals around $279-289 after $50 rebate.
DssTrainer @ Nov 5th 2008 10:00PM
I think $249-$299 is the new range for the run-of-the-mill netbook now.
$399-$499 should be the price of a dual core atom nextgen netbooks
Nothing should ever top $500
Bigh @ Nov 6th 2008 11:05AM
I picked one up yesterday. truns out it's the with the crappy wifi card, non scrolling touchpad and no bluetooth. after tax and everything, I'd feel liek i should have spent the extra 100 bucks and got the good off newegg
manhattnik @ Nov 6th 2008 12:54PM
I got an Acer Aspire One, the 1GB/120GB version, for $250 from Best Buy, thanks to a promotion. Kind of hard to beat $250. This month I'm going to get moving and put OS X on it, for sure. It doesn't support sleep, but I've read that it can be made to boot up in under a minute...
