A MySpace portable audio player? (Design your own!)

MySpace has long been associated with music, and the site's recent push into commercial sales has prompted rumors that it might release a device of its own -- "it's possible," said the site's co-founder Chris DeWolfe when asked about it yesterday. For the time being, however, the social networking site will be wisely concentrating on what it does best: maintaining the world's foremost photographic archive of suburban tweenagers flashing gang signs and providing a much needed creative outlet for people with names like IfUaHATERthenDon'tbeHatin, « ASHLEE » and Psycho♥Rée. And to keep you entertained as you wait for another episode of MySpaceTV's Sorority Forever, feel free to check out the MySpacePMP Blingee after the break.
Update: We've found ourselves so visually inspired by the concept of a MySpace player that we've decided to run a Photoshop contest (that grandest of traditions) to see what you can come up with. Fire your best 'shops on over to contests at engadget dawt com, and together we can create a brighter future.

Does it automatically play crappy music every time you go to a different screen like the real MySpace?
From My Cube @ Nov 7th 2008 3:12PM
No, it only plays top 40 tracks to individualize your page as unique
LiqwidZero @ Nov 7th 2008 3:44PM
All I know is that I'm listening to Supertramp, John Denver, and The Beatles right now. Full albums on Myspace is the most awesome thing on the site.
wstroud86 @ Nov 9th 2008 2:09AM
you're listening to all three at the same time??? You're amazing!
Rudiger @ Feb 2nd 2009 12:55PM
Zing!
Limezor @ Nov 7th 2008 2:43PM
Somehow I picture the people who use MySpace already have a few iPods hanging around the house, and won't be needing this.

is it just me or do i spy a zune!

If you don't and you happen to work for the CIA, that explains a WHOLE lot.

Albeit an old Zune, in a chunky case... they've come a long way...

oh god no. So does this thing only play Chingy and Fall Out Boy? This has FAIL written all over it.
bandigolo @ Nov 7th 2008 2:50PM
HA! Believe it or not I didn't even see the Chingy picture until after that first post. I guess that answers my question...

I don't believe it.
Jeff @ Nov 7th 2008 2:50PM
What is the obsessive need these days to post pictures of yourself with the amount of alcohol you have consumed and flashing gangsta finger signs?
bandigolo @ Nov 7th 2008 2:59PM
Because it's hard core and badass. Obviously you wouldn't understand, "Jeff". What kind of screen name is "Jeff" anyway? God, you're so uncool.

I'm calling it, best Engadget picture of 2008.
Samboini @ Nov 7th 2008 3:23PM
We have a lot of fierce competition for that. An Engadget poll will decide.

My personal favorite is the sad faced Motorola logo!

Dear god, lets hope they dont.
It could be the crappiest product in history, yet it would still sell like hotcakes.
Josh @ Nov 7th 2008 2:56PM
ha! man myspace sucks...
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Nov 7th 2008 2:56PM
Can we just nuke myspace from the face of the planet? Most god-awful cesspool ever. The sites make my ears and eyes bleed. I can't imagine anything of value ever coming from it.

I find it hilarious that phanbouy has fans that have fans, and yet, we accept this as normal.
Then again, "creepy stalker crowd" is what I expect to associate with anything MySpace anyway these days, haha
MySpace - A place for pedophiles.

Andrew, I didn't know Flashpoint was on myspace

People still use MySpace? Seriously? I left after the customization went over the edge and I couldn't even load some of the profiles without some gay song starting and all these gay backgrounds..
ScooterDe @ Nov 7th 2008 3:59PM
u r gay, methinks

While that thing looks crappy, if you could load Rockbox onto the ROM, I think all cosmetic deficiencies would be forgiven. Those developers are so desperate to port Rockbox onto just about anything.
Developer 1: Hey Jim, did you see that Myspace is releasing a new mp3 player that will stream the same stale, old, unoriginal songs in order to pander to their teenybooper audience?
Developer 2: Yeah, I heard. Sounds like a failing media company struggling to stay relevent. Their downfall will be them transcending their online medium into a physical medium. This will continue until they a mere shadow of their former self and a punchline to a lame joke.
Developer 3: It's gonna have a hard disk and open source documentation for developers!
Developer 1: Is it going to be ugly as sin?
Developer 3: Of course.
Developer 2: What are we waiting for. Get coding!
Of course this is dramatized. Still gotta love the Rockbox though.
inteller @ Nov 7th 2008 4:44PM
interesting that you used a Zune as a template for your myspace PMP disaster. That is exactly what myspace should do. They should team up with Zune to make their platform cross compatible with the Zune social. The device already has wireless capability to stream dreck from myspace artists pages as well as listen to what other myspace friends dreck is playing.
if they create a PMP that is geared solely to their service it will fail hard. I suggest they do that before MS does something like buy up Facebook and integrates Zune into it.
telepheedian @ Nov 10th 2008 1:58PM
I would seriously consider leaving Zune if they integrated MySpace into it. Facebook on the other hand...
Phantom_Lord @ Nov 7th 2008 4:45PM
Zune! lol
SPOKE @ Nov 7th 2008 5:52PM
Stupid - at BEST they can create a stand along SW player for the PC, or even just an extention to their downloadable IM client.
Otherwise, a WASTE OF TIME. Just like when AOL tried to make something with AOL Radio... hahaha
Whatthehello @ Nov 7th 2008 7:12PM
lets hope that this device doesnt crash everytime you load a new page or list.
Jamie H @ Nov 7th 2008 10:49PM
It plats "I Kissed a girl" over and over again until another crappy song comes out.
Eugenia Loli-Queru @ Nov 8th 2008 12:55AM
i wouldn't buy this
Hashbrown Hunter @ Nov 8th 2008 7:39AM
Well the only thing that has me visiting MySpace more than Facebook right now is MySpace Music. I don't care if everyone rags on MySpace and the teen install base that has made it popular, all I care about is the great music side of it. Many artists have full albums up on their music pages now since MySpace debuted their new player and playlist function and it's awesome to just stream it whenever you like.
