Custom Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 back on eBay
A few moment's hesitation prevent you from placing the winning bid on that sweet, customized Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 a few weeks back? It's okay, we've all been there -- sitting at the screen, cursor hovering over the "Bid Now" button, wracked with indecision, finally saying "Why not?" just as the timer hits 0. Usually that's cause for a lifetime of bitter regret, but this time you're in luck. The winning bid of $17,000 turned out to be bogus, so the creators have placed the machine on eBay again, ready for you to ponder anew. Now, before you make some snide remarks about $17k being way too much for a tarted up PS3, take a look at the attention to detail here, and remember that 15 percent of the proceeds are going straight to the Child's Play charity -- a factor that should hopefully reduce the vehemence of those remarks by roughly a fifth.

Lying bastards with fake eBay bids should be drawn and quartered.
Tim Brown @ Nov 7th 2008 8:56AM
Please, this is Engadget, no drawing and quartering allowed here, just blending!
Shela Monster @ Nov 7th 2008 9:19AM
Blending and Apples...
...blending apples?
patriots_suk @ Nov 7th 2008 10:57AM
Get off this board you filthy animal.
Joseph @ Nov 7th 2008 12:14PM
I am going to place a fake bid, just to see if this gets posted 3 times. Who says that fake bids don't have a purpose?
OneLove @ Nov 7th 2008 12:17PM
Anyone who pays $17,000 for a ps3 should caricatured and halved.
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Nov 7th 2008 3:03PM
This will almost certainly not blend.
Valicore @ Nov 7th 2008 3:49PM
Fucking bastards, they should have to spend 24 hours in the sexual offenders wing of a correctional institution. Then maybe they wont think punking people is so funny...
Joe Anstine @ Nov 7th 2008 4:13PM
I agree. I have sold many things on eBay and dealing with bogus bids and scammers is a hassle that wastes a lot of your time. I imagine it is much worse when selling something like this custom PS3 too. Screw em' and if you wanna be a fake bidder now in light of this article, you are pathetic.
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Nov 7th 2008 8:44AM
15% ?????
Is that it.
Zelatio @ Nov 7th 2008 8:47AM
Seems reasonable to me. If I made something awesome like that and was selling it, I probably would never haven given any thought about donating some of the money I got. Props to this guy for doing that.
Backlin @ Nov 7th 2008 8:59AM
You know what 15% of $17,000 would have been?
$2,550.
rutsy5 @ Nov 7th 2008 12:50PM
And you know how much of that 2,550 will actually reach the children? Not a whole lot.
Valicore @ Nov 7th 2008 3:46PM
Great attitude which is really just something to make you feel better for being a cheap bastard. "Oh, most of that money wont reach kids anyway, so I'll just not donate, and BTW, 15% is cheap!"
Brian @ Nov 8th 2008 5:33AM
The Child's Play charity is an extraordinary one. It's run by fantastic people and they manage to funnel donations very efficiently to needy recipients. So yes, even $2,550 can go a loooong way when in the right hands.
xtole @ Nov 7th 2008 8:59AM
I'd rather just give my money to the charity than own that ugly pos.
iEye @ Nov 7th 2008 9:02AM
What? I'd rather give the $2550 to charrity, get a tax break and use the rest to puck up a rebuilt 69 big block Camaro... at least this way I feel good, look good instead of blowing $17,000 on a metal chopped PS3
Ooooh look at me I'm an F-in nerd with a metal gear video game PS3!
At least spend it on something completely adacious like a Swavorski jewl encrusted iPhone...
Patriks7 @ Nov 7th 2008 9:20AM
I'm afraid that Swarovski crystals on an iPhone would blind you..
farfisa @ Nov 7th 2008 9:10AM
But think of the bragging rights. ...though few people brag about "never getting laid again."
Ethan @ Nov 7th 2008 9:39AM
While excess isn't exactly in fashion right now, if you've got large amounts and MGS is important to you, and it's certainly popular and good enough to inspire that importance in some people, I can see how you'd justify it.
Joseph @ Nov 7th 2008 12:17PM
Sometimes i think people get so excited to post, they forget to type words.
CP @ Nov 7th 2008 10:29AM
are we sure that "child's play charity" that's getting 15% doesn't go by the name of "ebay/paypal"? oh wait - they take more than that.
J. Baker @ Nov 7th 2008 10:36AM
It was 7% (ish) to ebay, and about 5% from paypal last time I sold something.
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Nov 7th 2008 3:05PM
Seriously. I simply cannot believe how much eBay charges. I hadn't sold anything in a year or two, their fees are astronomical now. How are they not making money hand over fist with this business? Tried to go to Yahoo auctions, oops, doesn't exist anymore. Can't wait until there's a viable eBay competitor.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Nov 7th 2008 10:58AM
I bought the same skin for my ps3, the carbon fiberesqe skin, when I tried to take it off it left pieces on, like his. I think I'll do something for Socom with my Launch day 60gig, (full backwards compatibility in that baby). Maybe I'll get enough money to buy me a segway and another ps3.
SimbaDogg @ Nov 7th 2008 11:17AM
i guess i might be an idiot here, but i think its retarded to have the "metal gear solid" facing away from you. i mean, when you have your xbox, wii, ps3...do you face the opening slot AWAY from you? i'm sure not all people in the world that have ps3s have them standing vertically. whatever
Joseph @ Nov 7th 2008 1:10PM
This is definitely a display piece. Something that you should show off. This means, if it was intended to be shown vertically, you show it vertically. You wouldn't purchase the Mona Lisa and then hang it sideways, because it fit better and then question da vinci for painting her sideways.
SimbaDogg @ Nov 7th 2008 1:27PM
wow...i didn't know that PS3s were pieces of art that could be bought and put on display and never played. I know even some of the people that had their limited editions signed by hideo himself actually use theres. Anyways, its all besides the point, the text is upside down
NERV @ Nov 7th 2008 11:38AM
@Zelatio
I'm wit u, dem ducats is mine
Unique Gift Ideas @ Nov 7th 2008 11:57AM
I won't deny that this custom system is incredible, but $17,000? I can't really blame the winning bidder for bailing out after getting probably one of the worst feelings of buyers remorse he had ever experienced.
wengleung @ Nov 7th 2008 2:10PM
and the infamous brick just got heavier.
xtole @ Nov 7th 2008 9:20AM
its a console! i dont think your entertainment center cares if its gained 2 pounds... or gravity gets excited that it has more to act against.
Ethan @ Nov 7th 2008 9:32AM
I think it's more of a giant pebble.
Guruboy @ Nov 7th 2008 10:40AM
The Xbox 360 takes up way more space when you include its own brick, which is actually infamous.
NHAnimator @ Nov 7th 2008 11:01AM
"and the infamous brick just got heavier."
This complaining about consoles' weight is silly. I lifted my PS3 once, to move it from my unboxing location to where it sits now. I'm pretty sure Sony wasn't sitting saying "We need to add some unnecessary weight. It's just not heavy enough." Believe me, it wasn't a strain moving it. Maybe people need to lay off the Cheetos and try some broccoli.
And "infamous" roughly means being famous for something bad or evil. I wouldn't call a PS3 infamous (especially when you consider that you can score an 80GB model for $299 after gift card).
Eric B @ Nov 7th 2008 12:57PM
I can score any item I want for FREE after "Gift Card" if that gift card has enough money on it lol
Think ya used the wrong term or the weight of the PS3 just strained you lol
Lars @ Nov 7th 2008 1:51PM
I think he was referring to the $100 gift card promo for buying a PS3. It's technically not $100 off the PS3, but if you were gonna spend $100 on other stuff at the store anyways then it's a great deal.
NHAnimator @ Nov 7th 2008 3:03PM
@Lars: Yes, thank you. I stand corrected.
digitallysick @ Nov 7th 2008 3:06PM
if they expect 17,000 for this thing, i would bid and not pay just to teach them a lesson
Valicore @ Nov 7th 2008 3:54PM
Hmmm, you sound like you'd be right at home in SSR Belarus cerca 1975.
Dave Chappelle @ Nov 7th 2008 7:50PM
they do not 'expect' any specific number you idiot ITS AN AUCTION!!
brad @ Nov 7th 2008 4:25PM
Or i'd rather just buy a normal PS3 and donate the rest of the money to charity...or buy a 1997 mazda rx7
skulldriveshaft @ Nov 7th 2008 8:34PM
It's a charity auction people, sheesh.
The poster didn't mention everything else included in this auction, which is an interesting collection of items besides the PS3.
pete-01 @ Nov 7th 2008 11:30PM
what a ripoff. For 17k you could get 17 iphone "I am rich" licenses.
Jocopo Jenkins @ Nov 9th 2008 9:01PM
If you got that type of money to blow on a custom gaming council, than your that type of person that blows more cash than that one night in Cabo!
