Palit's Radeon HD 4870 X2 has preposterous clock speeds, marketing hype

Hong Kong-based video card manufacturer Palit is excited about its Revolution 700 Deluxe video card -- so much so that we're a little frightened by the force of its enthusiasm. The ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPU is no slouch to begin with, but this iteration has cores overclocked to 750MHz and 2GB of GDDR5 memory at a face-melting 3.8GHz. As imposing as clock speeds are, they likely can't measure up to the epic hype from Palit. "All other cards beware," the press release boldly cries, "there is a new king in town and it only comes from Palit!" Tap the read link for the whole thing -- best enjoyed while listening to the Mortal Kombat theme song.

For maybe like 3 months...if at that
Samboini @ Nov 7th 2008 12:49PM
Will it whine like a bitch though? Noise = not good. :(
Lucas @ Nov 7th 2008 12:36AM
750mhz for the cores isn't overclocked. That's the standard speed for all 4870 X2's.
The Purveyor of Justice @ Nov 7th 2008 11:24AM
Yeah! I could get one with 800mhz core clock months ago. This ain't no overclock! IT'S FACTORY SPECS!!!!
loosely_coupled @ Nov 7th 2008 7:04PM
first thing I thought of... "preposterous clock speeds" my ***...

At first I thought the avatar was Barack Obama tripping on drugs while being held/rubbed down up by a sea of hands.

If he kicks your ass you can sue him and the state and make millions, not a bad deal perhaps.

That looks nothing like Obama whatsoever.. I mean not even close dude...

I read it while listening to Mortal Kombat. It was indeed pretty epic. I feel the power already.
Romesh @ Nov 7th 2008 1:10AM
Ditto, incredibly epic. Good call
bolezhinkov @ Nov 7th 2008 2:46AM
final combat has had 39 plays this week at lastfm.
aznofazns @ Nov 7th 2008 12:45AM
honestly engadget... sometimes you are so clueless... stock 4870 core speed is 750mhz, stock memory speed is 4x900 = 3.6ghz... 3.8ghz is only a 50mhz overclock of the memory.
James @ Nov 7th 2008 3:07AM
Theyre too used to macs.
Vinnie @ Nov 7th 2008 12:48AM
Wow, a triple slot cooler
Laughing Man @ Nov 7th 2008 2:25AM
Thats a Hugh Bitch!
James @ Nov 7th 2008 12:52AM
Really it takes up 3 pci slots?
Dave Chappelle @ Nov 7th 2008 1:20AM
3 PCI SLOTS? wtf,
if this is true this in my opinion does not even count as a advancement in technology. I am sure Nvidia could make a DUAL CORE X2 GTX280 if size did not matter.
1234321 @ Nov 7th 2008 1:40AM
actually no one can make a dual core GPU yet
Rogue_Genius @ Nov 7th 2008 1:50AM
Yep, she's a big girl alright...
Big girls need love too.
James @ Nov 7th 2008 3:05AM
Imagine 2 in crossfire and having no room for a soundcard.
gonintendo @ Nov 7th 2008 8:09AM
why would you want dual core when this has 1600 "cores" (800 stream processors per gpu, 2 gpu's so 1600)
RijilV @ Nov 7th 2008 12:54AM
ah, mortal kombat - though seriously there were some good tunes on those soundtracks..
whatishalo? @ Nov 7th 2008 1:01AM
can this handle my email through AOL? I'd hate to spend my $$ on something that cannot render AOL email fast enough
Samboini @ Nov 7th 2008 12:48PM
Your comment is just as unfunny as yor name.
digitallysick @ Nov 7th 2008 1:07AM
I liked the graphics card part
Jamesy @ Nov 7th 2008 1:09AM
Cost? Heat? Doesn't seem worth it right now when a 3850 does everything I need just fine.
thethirdmoose @ Nov 7th 2008 1:42AM
It can't run two copies of Crysis at the same time. Ergo, it is worthless.
aznofazns @ Nov 7th 2008 1:59AM
apparently you don't play the latest graphically intense games at 1680x1050 or higher... a 3850 doesn't even compare to a single 4850, much less a 4870X2
Lyle @ Nov 7th 2008 2:00AM
The main story here is that the 4870X2, which is a resoundingly HOT card, has a triple slot cooler, the first of its kind marketed.
What is overlooked is that those who purchase this kind of video card are typically better-served by water cooling them, as it allows for better motherboard-slot utilization...and it greatly reduces the noise.
Basically a non-story, as the card itself is nothing special compared to other 4870X2s...but, graphics-cardland is pretty slow at the moment, so I'll not hold it too much against them, as Palit themselves are really to blame.
aznofazns @ Nov 7th 2008 2:08AM
Another fault by Palit is its statement that the core is overclocked... great way to mislead the uninformed consumer (not to mention both HotHardware AND Engadget) into thinking that the card is something special. And in all honestly, 3.8ghz overclock on the memory is a joke... all I had to do to my VisionTek 4870 was move the slider from 900 to 1100 and voila... an effective 4.4ghz speed.
Ori Matalon @ Nov 7th 2008 3:01AM
Looks good. Does technically it must take 3 slots?

Then what's that on the first line you wrote if it's not a comment?
Seriously - stop marketing your own blog on other blogs. It's lame.

this thing looks exactly like my crappy little window fan from Target.

I read it while listening to the Mortal Kombat theme... and without music. And they were right... it really is best read with the Mortal Kombat Theme!

No No No.... that is the Aloha branded Video version of the adapter. They call it the "Crappy Cool"

It's staring at me!
Eli Gundry @ Nov 7th 2008 5:20PM
While this card is extremely epic, Palit's graphic design department should be fired for the box are. Typically when showing off something that's supposed to have crazy amounts of power, your box art should help convey this message. Art that includes tigers, lions, hot chicks, burly men, a universe exploding, or Crysis box art are examples of power. Palit thought it would be a good idea to put a poorly rendered, kiddy-esqe frog on their box. Seriously, he looks like that frog from Starfox. Oh well, sweet card.
