The Onion pits Snow Leopard against Windows 7, everyone wins
After that earlier piece on global e-waste, we thought you might want something to lighten the mood. Fortunately, The Onion is ready with a sardonic, blood-shot eye turned to the respective OS releases on the way from Cupertino and Redmond. Click on through for the full comparison while we pack up things from this lame, euro coffee shop.

Snow Leopard fo shure. I like my porn running at 45 fps.
wako @ Nov 10th 2008 12:08PM
why? because your eyes can only see at 30fps?
Fry Guy @ Nov 10th 2008 1:11PM
The difference between 30fps and 60fps in a videogame is quite noticeable.
Samboini @ Nov 10th 2008 1:58PM
What is fps? Faps per second?
sixtyfps @ Nov 11th 2008 11:29AM
The short answer is "no", but it depends on the circumstances.
Gabe @ Nov 10th 2008 7:22AM
Windows 7 is just another word for Vista
TriXsteR @ Nov 10th 2008 7:30AM
And Snow Leopard is just another Leopard.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Nov 10th 2008 10:48AM
@TriXsteR,
Is it only me who keeps misreading the new name as "Slow Leopard"?..
WixosTrix @ Nov 10th 2008 3:16PM
i just cant wait til black panther or white tiger!
Mez Jr @ Nov 10th 2008 5:23PM
OSX Ocelot is when I jump on board.
who? @ Nov 10th 2008 6:03PM
Maybe Winblows should start using animals OS names. I mean, at least they [still] won't be in danger of having an original idea then.
Johan S @ Nov 10th 2008 7:25AM
Onion articles are nearly always hilarious, but this article .. it seems like they could have made it a lot funnier.
adrian @ Nov 10th 2008 7:45AM
Seems pretty straight forward to me. There's no beating around the bush with this article.
John @ Nov 10th 2008 8:46AM
It's news to me that Macs can run Snood!
What a throwback, Jesus. I haven't played that game since 8th grade (like 9 years ago).
OneLove @ Nov 10th 2008 11:54AM
I tried the windows 7 pre-beta (you can activate it with an old vista RC1 beta key). It looks very good, much faster, but still looks like vista. I just wish it was a FREE service pack and not a new OS.
tcc3 @ Nov 10th 2008 2:22PM
You know what they say, if wishes were horses, cheap assholes on the internet would all get free OS updates forever.
Tim Spence @ Nov 10th 2008 7:26AM
Isn't the snow leopard an endangered species? Well done Apple; good choice for a name there.
Maxwell Ash @ Nov 10th 2008 7:36AM
Yes, but so are tigers, panthers, and regular leopards.
KarlW @ Nov 10th 2008 8:10AM
With the "development" happening around some parts of the UK, you could argue that Vistas are pretty rare now, too.
JOnZ @ Nov 10th 2008 12:10PM
It an endangered species, but like every endangered species, the tree hugers will adopt one just to make themselves important
Thi mam(kris120890) @ Nov 10th 2008 7:27AM
It would be funny if........................................................................................................................................................................................................................if it was funny.
Deeznuts420 @ Nov 10th 2008 8:41AM
which it was so.....yeah

would it really have been so hard to include the whole image instead of hacking off the bottom 10 percent?
John @ Nov 10th 2008 8:51AM
Sorry, corporate policy.
Mike @ Nov 10th 2008 7:39AM
It's annoying how people always put shit on windows... I have both a PC and a MAC... I use both... They both work just fine... They do different stuff....
And I have more problems with the MAC!
Niz @ Nov 10th 2008 7:45AM
I have to agree the most expensive one i know is a friend with a Mac book, the keyboard and mouse pad stopped working then later it refused to boot, £400 to fix? apple store, she decided to just buy a new mac book (well she did have an outdated 3 year old one).
zephead @ Nov 10th 2008 1:05PM
I could make a snide remark about how MAC stands for Media Access Control, but I'm not going to.
jorvay @ Nov 10th 2008 3:04PM
yet you kindof just did.
zephead @ Nov 10th 2008 4:45PM

CONGRATURATIONS!! YOU WIN INTERNET!! A WINNER IS YOU!!
DrXym @ Nov 10th 2008 7:41AM
Vista isn't perfect by any stretch but I don't know what so much hate is poured on it. After I disabled UAC, the new desktop is an extremely pleasant environment to work in.
w4rh34rt @ Nov 10th 2008 9:02AM
You do know one of the worst things you can do in Vista is disable UAC, because it mucks a lot of the settings up for security and it can give you more problems. I read an article from someone or other explaining how to make vista automatically set UAC pop-ups to Yes, or accept or whatever it is. This also helps as you won't have any problems with doing anything that needs UAC. If I manage to find it I'll post it, but I'm not a Vista user so I didn't try it out.
DrXym @ Nov 10th 2008 5:38PM
I haven't had any issues disabling UAC and I trust myself (and my firewalls, antivirus apps) enough not to worry about installing trojans or whatever.
Smi @ Nov 10th 2008 7:47AM
You know, I do wish that all this STUPID (It's worth the emphasis) Mac vs PC nonsense would stop. Both have their strengths, both have their weaknesses. Some prefer one, other prefer the alternative. Arguably, neither one is better than the other. It's an argument that, like Nikon vs Canon, Creation vs Evolution, will never have a winner. Because people just get stuck into their way of thinking and don't want to back down - and then, of course, the fanboys wade in and it gets messier.
Can we at least give Microsoft a chance with Windows 7? It might turn out to be very good indeed. It might not, but hey - stranger things have happened.
Christian Walters @ Nov 10th 2008 7:49AM
WELCOME TO INTERNET!!!
meester anderson @ Nov 10th 2008 4:03PM
Saying Creation Vs. Evolution doesn't have a winner is up there with saying global warming doesn't exist, or no one will ever need more than 640 KB of RAM. Whether you believe in god or not (I'm agnostic), evolution is simple fact. The "evolution is just a theory" people neglect the fact that damn near everything in science is "just a theory" including (and note the name) Cell Theory. I don't know about you, but i've looked at cells under a microscope, and am pretty damn sure they exist.
Gojulas @ Nov 10th 2008 10:20AM
I completely agree, with you Smi; honestly I think we can all agree that all Operating Systems suck and they always will. They are all the same in respect that no matter what "new" features they perform, the technological community will perpetually crave something more and always find fault with how something is executed. I'm not saying that they are all created equal nor that they have the same potential, but I don't think it's constructive to boil it down to pointless comments about the OS you don't use sucks without looking at the faults of the one you do use.
Though I guess, by that token, this post isn't really constructive as it won't change anything...
Sim @ Nov 10th 2008 10:37AM
Hear hear..
Other than that evolution has been winning for millions of years.
Fry Guy @ Nov 10th 2008 1:16PM
The answers are:
OS X
Canon
Evolution
There you go.
Jefferson Neyen @ Nov 10th 2008 7:05PM
Are you seriously comparing the MAC vs. PC argument with Evolution vs. Creation argument?
That alone destroy your entire argument of preference, since in the Evolution vs. Creation argument, one is based on verifiable facts while the other is based on a book written over three-thousand years ago. There is a clear winner when all of the evidence is taken into account.
While MAC vs. PC argument is based not only based on the OS, but also the availability of software and the customization of the hardware. The evidence cannot determine which is the better option since the available data is mixed.
Work on your logic, sir!!!
MikeWard1701 @ Nov 10th 2008 7:48AM
Porn on a mac?
Sounds like the equivelant of a Britney Spears concert at Carnegie Hall, so so wrong!
Cole Mitguard @ Nov 10th 2008 7:57AM
Well when it get right down to it there can only be one winner... and I dont care what anyone says, the Snow Leopard would TOTALLY pwn the number 7... unless that 7 implies that there are 7 SNOW LEOPARDS... man, then that would be a totally different battle to be won.
In all honesty, I use a Mac, but I am "Am a PC", just depends what I'm doing. Im looking forward to 7, I think that its going to offer a lot of cool features that we dont have right now on any platform, and that's that its all about right? And the better Windows 7 is, the better OSX11 will have to be whenever that gets around to being released. That's the beauty of competition. And now that most of us mac users who actually utilize the uber expensive computers (thats right, a mac user admitting the fact that Macs are exspensive) are dual booting windows and OSX anyways, I dont see why Mac users love to bash on windows so much. I cant tell you how many times Ive had to default over to Windows because I need to do some stupid file conversion and the freeware software that I need can only be found in a .exe... and the mac application that would do the same thing would cost me more than free. haha.
Keith @ Nov 10th 2008 8:07AM
I guess "winning" is a matter of perspective. He is my perspective on it...
How many Windows 7 users will have a virtual machine running snow leopard? versus how many snow leopard users will have a virtual machine running Windows 7?
Cole Mitguard @ Nov 10th 2008 8:25AM
@ Keith
I dont think that you are looking at the whole picture. Its very easy to run windows on a Mac, its NOT easy to run OSX on a PC. And us OSX users have windows really just because there are some applications that we must use from time to time that require windows, as is the reality with a OS that dominated over 90% of the market. If you have a windows machine, you really dont have any reason to run OSX for this same purpose. Us OSX users dont prefer Windows, if we did we would of purchased a PC and saved some money. And to be honest, Apple does everything for you to install windows on your computer except give you a copy of windows, Microsoft doesn't really seem to be in any hurry to do the same for OSX.
So I guess you are right in your implication that many more OSX users with have windows 7 either in a VM or boot camp boot, but your "perspective" is a little to restrictive, and you aren't taking into account the realities to market.
Jay Evans @ Nov 10th 2008 8:54AM
"Apple does everything for you to install windows on your computer except give you a copy of windows, Microsoft doesn't really seem to be in any hurry to do the same for OSX"
That's a joke, right?
You do know that Apple expressly forbids the installation of any Apple OS on anything but Apple hardware.
Gojulas @ Nov 10th 2008 10:51AM
@Cole Mitguard
I'm not sure how readily I would call slapping a GUI onto an existing partitioning utility and providing drivers for your industry standard hardware qualifies as doing "everything for you". Giving credit to the people at VMware is one thing but I would go as far as to say Apple has done quite little to enable users to run Windows aside from switching to an x86-64 architecture...
And if there is any question about who is to blame when it comes to OS X not running on white box hardware, that finger can be pointed squarely at Apple. Microsoft isn't even involved in that particular matter. Apple makes it quite clear that they don't want anyone running their OS on hardware they don't sell and do everything possible to make sure it doesn't happen...
I mean, I guess if you want you can give credit to Apple for switching from PowerPC to x86-64, but I think that was more in the interest of self preservation than anything else...
SonicEarth @ Nov 10th 2008 7:58AM
Looks more like an advertisement for Apple. Are you sure they didn't pay The Onion for ad space?
Hiro11 @ Nov 10th 2008 8:34AM
Because Windows always crashes!!!1!!! Get it? The Onion has fallen off since they moved to NYC. They used to be snarky 20-somethings who saw right through bullshit. Now they're just snarky 20-somethings yuppie hipsters who think they're cool. Move back to Madison, you guys are becoming what you used to mock.
zargon @ Nov 10th 2008 8:34AM
Granted it is just a pre-beta, but I have seen Windows 7 in action and I like what I see so far. It is running better than Windows Vista seemed to be running.
I may actually look forward to upgrading all PCs here at work to 7 when the time comes.
SeaTec @ Nov 10th 2008 8:54AM
*sigh*
I wish Mac would try to integrate their OS and make it work with so many different ad on hardware Perph. So many 3rd party softwar packages. Then come back and do a comparison. MS is eventually going to have the universal interface that everybody will be using. DO i wish its was shareware. hell yeah but who is going to front this much R&D into a GUI developement. Mac? ha! Mac didnt even bother to develope theyr own proper productvity software and begged MS to let them run Office on their Mac's. Does Mac develope something like sharepoint? hell no. They spend money on dumb a$$ adds depicting every PC users as a lame fuddy duddy which is actually more of a depiction of the people i see socializing at the local Mac store holding latte's comparing apps they donlaoded that Mobile iwndows users have been usng for years on their phones. duh!. Mac users should really be a little bit more respectfull of MS since most of the stuff they see and use on the internet is somehow a derivitive of something MS has pioneerd. Before you start your lame argument about MS buing out little companies with good ideas think about this. Which large company hasnt taken that approach?
Windows 7. don;t judge a book by the biased reporter who just wants to get credit with the Maxc users ( i don;t know why?).
Andrew @ Nov 10th 2008 11:33AM
First, you're a retard. The name of the company is Apple. They make a office suite compatible with Microsoft Office, iWorks. You have to be a kid otherwise you would know Apple existed years before Microsoft was even founded. In fact Jobs hired Gates to do some work for Apple.
