Samsung's X460 laptop gets fondled on video
The lucky, lucky chaps over at Laptop got an early sit-down with the glossy 14.1-inch Samsung X460 we've been hearing so much about. We'll have to be patient and wait for the full review, but some early impressions are that the outer shell smudges up quite easily (as evidenced by the above photo), it's got a pretty fast boot-time and that the display is very, very bright. Check out the deeply riveting video of the handling after the break.

good morning, laura

I dont see anything worth anticipating from this lappy.
Hooray for fingerprint-attracting glossy surfaces.
samsung's laptop are poor in terms of quality . its not that samsung is bad company but i mean to say its new in this computer market and production. i am telling this because i own one ....
the cd rom broke after 14 months so i had to pay for the new one and the hinge is also broken but i am still using and its all Fckedup !
only good thing is keyboard and its weight ! :)
A cdrom has a bulb like thingie inside, if it breaks, it's just like any other lighting device.
I want this lappy, especially since my trusty old dell is acting up...
BTW, when you buy Samsung or any other Korean-made products, please make sure they are not "counterfeited products from China" (e.g. Sammeng, Samsumg, Amycall, Made in Koera/Kobea, SQNY, Parasonic, Made in Japon, ect...):
Jesus, what has somebody's experience with a notebook has got to do with race? I am perfectly happy with my Thinkpad notebook, Nokia mobile, Japanese MP3 player etc. If the thing works then who cares where it is made from? From my personal experience, Samsung notebooks are reliable though they do not have that ThinkPad or VAIO quality. Their MP3 players are nice.
@KIFF, take a look at his other posts/comments, he is a typical chinese troll... Also, the quality of thinkpads (aka. chinkpads) has "definitely declined" since IBM sold their divison to the lowly/incompentent/lazy Chinese Lenovo who has no concept of 'quality management and experiences'.... I doubt the Chinese is able to compete with Sony and Samsung on quality.
I have the same experience as you, but it occured within the warranty period, so I have a new one replaced.
Despite the weak DVD-ROM hinge, Samsung's laptop is quite good.
I have mine turned on for a few days and the system is still stable.
BTW, Samsung has been in the laptop market for a long time, but just not in US.
In Engadget, I think we consider the quality of the product base on itself but not who made it.
Lenovo is quite an advanced Chinese company and have created some leading products like the X300, does't it?
You are really classy with your generalisation. I agree that many China made products are badly made, but not necessarily all. There are badly made products from every country! Look at iRiver. Their products are often known to have great quality, but that wasn't the case with the E100.
Certain ThinkPad lines have fallen in quality, but that does not make them all bad product. Pre-Lenovo ThinkPads has always been made in China anyway (didn't you know that?). In fact most of their R&D are done in New York or Japan.
@l3enjamin, actually, most Chinese-made products are garbages, from cars/deathtraps, melamine riddled milk, crumsy chinese knockoffs to laptops with cheap plastic chasis/covers which contain 'lead' and other toxic substances... And no, Lenovo is not an advanced chinese company, they still lack in quality control as compared to other companies from Japan, Korean and America or Europe... Remember the Tata, of india, which bought Jaguar and Land Rover of the UK? Do you believe the Tata became an advanced indian company thru the acquisition of Jaguar/Land Rover??? Hell, No... The quality control is not something that can be done day and night.
The quality control is not something that can be done in a day and night...

Anybody who understands East Asian culture and history will tell you how they are drastically different from each other. Just because something happened in one location at one time doesn't mean it will repeat at another location at another time. You only need to see the history of Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan to tell that global brands like Toyota, Sony, Samsung, and Hyundai won't emerge from China. Why is that? Because of Chinese tendency to pursue short term profits in exchange for a long term growth, and the government's failure to establish an economic plan with a long term vision.
You cannot compare Chinese with Japanese/Korean for following reasons.
1. Japanese/Korean had tiny domestic markets and were forced to crack US and EU markets just to survive from the beginning. China's domestic market is rather large. In fact, engineering cars to be US/EU regulation compliant could be fatal in a market condition where there is zero regards for safety and quality, and consumers shop only based on pricing alone. Make your car better than your competitor and raise your price, your competitor undercuts your price with an inferior but cheaper (and poisonous) products and you are dead in China where the prices drop every quarter.
2. Chinese consumers themselves no longer consider Chinese brand vehicles when the intended price budget is more than $5,000. Accordingly, almost all Chinese brand vehicles are priced below $5,000. This heavy focus on low-price vehicles prohibit Chinese makers from higher priced and higher quality vehicles suitable for the US and EU markets

I love samsung laptops / products. Actually I currently own a samsung R70, thinking about getting an ultra portable in asia, samsung printer, cellphone, dual monitors (samsung) and bluetooth headset! I'm actually proud to say they have never broke on me, and I carry my laptop in my schoolbag along with textbooks etc.
I am a Chinese, I use a Samsung Q70 and I'm typing on it as we speak. And guess what, its made in China, no complaints so far. I also have an LG tablet LCD and 2 other flatron lcds, all working very well for me (made in Korea).
I also have a Lenovo X61, and that thing has awesome quality. I don't know about you, but saying all Chinese products are crap is just stereotypical. For example, half of ATI is of Chinese engineers (i was one), and the newest Radeon ins't too crap I hope?
whats with all the "lappy" talk
The amount of stickers on the palm rest is just...sinful.
All these 13.3 inch laptops have only 800 vertical screen resolution which just isn't enough. Only Sony has gone above this with the Vaio Z (1600 x 900!) but they're too expensive. What ever happened to any Dell XPS 1330 update to Centrino 2?
Thinkpad X300 screen contains 900 vertical pixels.
- So, who manufactures LCD (1600 x 900 pxiel) panels for Vaios?
Answer: Samsung S-LCD, a joint venture with Sony, supplies LCD panels for Vaios.
- What about Chinkpads or other 'no-name' Chinese laptops?
Answer: Samsung supplies "A to B graded" LCD panels to such companies like Apple, Sony, Dell and other Japanese/American laptop manufacturers, while supplying (dumping) "C, D and E graded (rejected)' LCD panels to the Chinese 'no-name' notebook manufacturers.
Hope this helps. ;)
is it just me or does this guy look like he wants to kill someone?!

Ah, it's Samsung X460, the new one in town. And look, it's got its red satin evening dress on... a true little tigress. But don't you dare touch any of its buttons... the Sony batteries inside will blow your head clean off.
A true portable fatale.
/nerdiness off
Looks like a weighting station
For that kind of money, give me the Zepto NOX A14. Only slightly thicker (1.34" vs. 1.25") and heavier (5+ lbs). But you get way more laptop for the money. Higher resolution screen (1440x900), better video card (9600m GT) and more customization options.
Why would they put glossy, fingerprint prone plastic where it is? That's right where you will be putting your hands on to open the lid...
Don't by a Samsung laptop. The quality is about the same as an Acer, so you're better off buying an Acer for less. If you have a technical issue, you will be screwed. Samsung has no PC service model in place to deal with problems.
No offense to the Chinese, but you Chinese really need to get a life and realize that there is no single (non-Chinese) Asian community that wants to be associated with you... Even Chinese, from Taiwan, think very lowly of the Chinese... Odd, isn't it?
Samsung Laptops (counterfeited by your Chinese friends) == Acer Laptops
Genuine Samsung Laptops >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Acer Laptops
BTW, are you talking about the very same company (Acer/Benq) that has filed an application for the bankruptcy two years ago resulted from catastrophic management, poor quality of its (Benq) mobile products, and lack of 'service'? You Chinese are mad funny, indeed. XD And no wonder why these Chinese are looked down upon by the Japanese, Koreans and other Asian counterparts.
@ChineseAreMadFunny - It seems you got a problem with our friends from the East. Drop dead if you may, I have a samsung phone, tv and am getting myself a samsung lappy
