Sony smartly hacks $100 off of its mylo 2 before the holidays
We don't have any hard sales figures in front of us or anything, but we can't imagine that Sony has moved too many (or just two, actually) of its mylo 2 "Internet Devices" since launching it this past January. To that end, the outfit is hacking a full Benjamin from the purchase price, bringing the handheld down to an entirely more palatable $199.99. Both the black and white versions are being sold right now with the instant rebate tacked on, and the offer is good until January 31st of next year -- which definitely means the mylo 3 is due for a February 1, 2009 release.

No wifi, :(
strider_mt2k @ Nov 12th 2008 9:21AM
Read specs or articles much?
I'm guessing no.
Brandon @ Nov 12th 2008 9:37AM
Dude, it says it connects to Wifi hotspots right there in the phone description......... >.>
Cory @ Nov 12th 2008 9:38AM
Brandon, read the description yourself, it's not a phone.
Brandon @ Nov 12th 2008 9:42AM
Just made the exact same mistake on another blog by calling a phone an internet device. I think I need to lye down.
Smart People Play Tuba @ Nov 12th 2008 10:57AM
@ Brandon
"Lye" down? Like, with some old-fashioned soap?
strider_mt2k @ Nov 12th 2008 12:24PM
IT BURNS!!!
strider_mt2k @ Nov 12th 2008 9:20AM
Fifty more bucks to go and you're there!.
(You'll need that for the new proprietary memory card you're going to require.)
music007 @ Nov 12th 2008 8:29PM
lol, still too over priced, and those memory cards cost as much as a mp3 player. wtf is wrong with sd??? Sony you owe me $200 for my psp.
Broo @ Nov 12th 2008 9:28AM
$200 is still too much for a WiFi device that does not support basic POP3 or IMAP (the Mylo 2 email 'client' is web based only).
Cybergypsy @ Nov 12th 2008 9:28AM
I read them, however forums say it is had to connect to any thing but a Tmobile hotspot.
farfisa @ Nov 12th 2008 9:30AM
Throw a PSP in there and sold!
doubleu606 @ Nov 12th 2008 9:30AM
is Smartly a word?
strider_mt2k @ Nov 12th 2008 10:30AM
It's perfectly cromulent.
Daniel @ Nov 12th 2008 9:35AM
Why haven't they released one of these with phone functionality? My wife would have this in a heartbeat.
Lon C @ Nov 12th 2008 11:02AM
I agree. Throw in a cellular radio and market it right, they could make a killing on the Sidekick market.
Brandon @ Nov 12th 2008 9:37AM
199 is just too much for an inferior phone. Sony seems to be two steps behind the competition when it comes to smatphones.
Cory @ Nov 12th 2008 10:58AM
Good thing it's not a phone then.
Brandon @ Nov 12th 2008 9:40AM
(note to self. Dont read two articles at the same time. You risk mixing information up. I just downranked myself for my own stupidity)
StalematE @ Nov 12th 2008 11:02AM
you downranked yourself? hahahaha oh my god, that made my day.
htd @ Nov 12th 2008 9:41AM
they shouldn't have spent the money and effort to create a separate device when so many people just want an enhanced psp type thing
iEye @ Nov 12th 2008 9:47AM
cut another $100 or add GSM, one of the 2.
Paulmichael @ Nov 12th 2008 2:46PM
How about both?
Tired_ @ Nov 12th 2008 10:17AM
I really don't understand the market for this. Is there anything mylo can do that an N800 or an iPod Touch can't?
namtastic @ Nov 12th 2008 4:43PM
But isn't that the point? They want something in that same category.
suvayanr @ Nov 12th 2008 6:06PM
well it says it does have flash. and the screen's a tad bigger. but otherwise the ipod touch is better
Flashpoint @ Nov 12th 2008 10:47AM
YES the Mylo fits in your pocket, but personaly, in between my iPhone and my HP Laptop, I'd perfer a netbook with Windows XP.
Seth @ Nov 12th 2008 10:58AM
It can be used as a phone using WiFi and Skype and it works very very well.
mercurysunblast @ Nov 12th 2008 11:21AM
$99...I'd even take it at $149. But NOT at $199. STILL too much.
Platinum_Skeet @ Nov 12th 2008 11:33AM
Couldn't you just buy a PSP?!?
Chan @ Nov 12th 2008 12:52PM
Actually, the PSP has pretty poor internet functionality due to hardware and software limitations.
Rob @ Nov 12th 2008 11:48AM
It still $75 overpriced.

There's jsut too many gadgets within Sony that can be used other than this right now.
Sure it can play music and video but they got the PSP and their own MP3 players right now. It can nicely browse with wifi but I know that they got that with PSP and most of their phones. It can do messenger but PSP got Skype and phones don't even need wifi to this function. Only way thing working for this is the keyboard and the touchscreen. I can only hope that they are lowering this to release a Mylo 3 with improvements!
I recommend an OS, even if it's Linux, with the use of XMB layout and have full function like netbooks; not just internet, camera, messenger, but word processing (homework, notes, or blogging), hard drive for music, pictures, and video recording for youtube, and other apps. Hell, why don't they just integrate this unit with the PSP?
Totesen @ Nov 12th 2008 12:48PM
I prefer a nokia internet tablet, i have used the MYLO and i dont like, it, it is really closed and i prefer The open linux and highly cuztumizable MAEMO
timatl @ Nov 12th 2008 1:04PM
$129 would be the sweet spot.
Glen @ Nov 12th 2008 1:28PM
I think the Mylo INCLUDES free access to McDonalds WIFI also, that might be a good thing
Glen @ Nov 12th 2008 1:33PM
Yes free access is included:
Have more fun at McDonald's® with your mylo device. COM-2 owners get free1 Wi-Fi access at over 9,000 participating Wi-Fi enabled McDonald's restaurants nationwide, over 10,000 Wayport Wi-Fi hotspot locations, 70 IHOP restaurants, 600 hotels and more.
Free through December 31, 2010
solodragon @ Nov 12th 2008 2:10PM
I was giving this thing some hard thought because of the convenience of having mobile IM and stuff. Then I got my iPhone. Now there's just no room left in my pockets between my Zune 120 and my iPhone 3G. Sorry, Sony, too little too late.
Towncivilian @ Nov 12th 2008 3:32PM
Mylo means soap in Russian.
And this thing does look like a bar of soap.
john @ Nov 12th 2008 5:31PM
Still over priced ... by about $200.
WRBWRXMAX @ Nov 12th 2008 9:40PM
The problem with this thing is that it's still completely pointless, when compared with phone offerings.
My $300 AT&T Tilt (AKA HTC TYTN II) cost the same as the Mylo's previous MSRP, and offers Wi-Fi with all the web browsing and VoIP trimmings, works with any IM network you want it to, plays music and video, and adds GPS and a half-decent camera... plus, obviously, it's a phone, and can go online without any need for a hotspot, at decent speeds. (I notice that small devices like this tend not to be much faster on WiFi than on 3G.)
So what's the point in spending the money on a similar device with half the functionality missing, and the other half gimped?
