Windows Mobile 6.5 was just a
whisper on a Motorola phone chief Sanjay Jha's lips two weeks ago, but now that
Ballmer himself has confirmed that there's at least one more rev of WinMo 6 en route before
Windows Mobile 7 hits it looks like the floodgates have opened -- check out these hot screenshots, one of which seems to have been liberally dipped in Zune sauce. We're hoping that means we'll see some Zune integration with this next generation of handsets, but we're not going to get too worked up yet (cough, Xbox). It does look quite nice, though, and we've got our fingers crossed that this revamp is more than just a pretty new home screen and app launcher -- you're
way late to
that party, Microsoft. No telling on when 6.5 will actually get here, but Ballms said it'll be sometime next year, so we're guessing we don't have too long to wait.
Update: As several of you have pointed out, some of the icons are a little suspicious -- that "Today" icon is OS X's Home icon, for example. We're hoping this is the real deal and not just a user-made skin, but we wouldn't start making any long term plans here.

And the analogue time doesn't match up with the digital version either on the left screen shot (unless the clock is upside down and even then its a bit close to call). Looks all a bit dodgy and fake.
And why the hell would Microsoft release something that links to Youtube straight off the home screen?
I seriously doubt that MS would place the battery and signal indicators in different locations on different screens. I'm calling fake, although it is a very nice fake.
This is fake because there is no way Microsoft could come out with something this nice and well thought out.
Nice, you can judge the quality by two screenshots?
Fake. Sorry to say, but I'm pretty sure it's true. First, the Apple icons. Second, would MS really implement this big of a UI change in an update called 6.5?? No, this would be a full point release if not a name change entirely (like XP --> Vista). Third, the menus in the left screenshot don't make sense. There are several app names listed (facebook, dodge ball) along with "Cloudy 56 deg". Seems poorly thought out.
UI changes aren't that big of an issue. You can look to Sony, HTC, and Samsung as examples of slapping a new UI on top of the existing WinMo 6.1 framework. In fact, if this is just a UI change (and maybe some minor added functionality) it makes perfect sense that they would try it out via an update rather than a full new generation release.
Also, while I do agree that the ordering of the list menu is a little strange, it would be consistent with WinMo that the user can adjust the order of their applications and how they are listed. Today that's accomplished by reordering your Today screen app list. You can put your clock on the top, in the middle, or on the bottom. With apps like Mobile Shell you can further customize those options.
I'm not convinced that this will be 6.5 - but I also don't have a hard believing that this could be a mock-up design outlining the direction they want to go.
If that's a theme please tell me where I can download it.
Smexy, even though it's most likely a fake. Looks to me like it's designd for somewierd ass hardware.
Either we're seeing a sneak peek of Winmo 7 or this is a nice shell/skin someone made for 6.1
Windows 7 is hitting 09/09 and Winmo 7 has been delayed to launch with Windows 7.
first of all, the windows logo is poorly cut out in photoshop on the right image,
second off, Microsoft would never make a UI that good looking.
Unless 'Dodge ball' refers to something other than the location-based social network 'dodgeball' then this is pretty certainly fake. Dodgeball is owned by Google, and isn't anywhere near popular enough for MS to include it in their offering considering it belongs to the competition.
Anyone notice the battery and reception icons are switched in the screenshots?
I assume this is fake
It is not just 'Today' icon, even 'Youtube' and and the icon below it with the camera(which you can see with iphoto or front row) is from OSX
Plus the color windows logo on the right, smushed and not really defined as the white one on the right.
well I have to say, even if this is fake, the image on the left I can get a feel for how that UI would work and I have to think it would be pretty cool. The Zune UI is well thought out and judging by this if it were modified to be on a phone that is exactly how I would expect the presentation to look.
I guess Microsoft hasn't shelved WinMo just yet.
I wanna get liberally dipped in Zune sauce.
Hm.. isn't he Youtube icon the Mac OSX network(?) icon?
Looks like a Settlers of Catan game board!!!
I just ordered my Xperia x1a. How long do you think it would be before they release an update for it with wm6.5?
