Official RED Scarlet and EPIC pics are sure to induce drool [Updated with OMG]
While the announcement isn't scheduled for another 7 hours and change, RED's Jim Jannard is whipping his fanbase into a frenzy with a steady stream of fragmented pictures. The one above looking every bit the 5D Mark II-killer we've been expecting. Jim's even dropping facts about Scarlet and EPIC being "completely modular and upgradeable in every way." What's more, he's offering hope to RED ONE owners who might feel cheated by today's introduction of Scarlet and EPIC. After all, he did promise to make "Obsolescence Obsolete" with his modular approach to camera building. So in addition to a TBD upgrade price for RED ONE owners to make the jump to a Mysterium-X sensor, owners will also have the option of trading in their cams for a $17,500 value towards the purchase of "any EPIC" (there's more than one?) or keep the RED ONE and receive a 12% credit on a Scarlet system. Nice... expensive, but nice. Check the gallery for all the images including one that looks like a telephoto lens for a RED DSLR.
P.S. Jim confirmed that, "Scarlet and RED EPIC are part of the same DSMC system." While you may not know what DSMC stands for, we're pretty sure that Canon and Nikon are well aware that DSMC means Digital Still & Motion Camera.
Update: Three-pound Scarlet and four-pound EPIC Mysterium-based "brains" capable of shooting 3K and 5K video, respectively, pictured after the break -- choose the brain then build a system around it. What look to be final (and complete!) product shots added to the gallery.

Is it me or does that sticker on the back make it look cheap?
Nah, it's just you.
It's not a sticker. The silver bit around the edge is made from titanium-plated gold and the red in the middle is pure mysterium.
Oh dear it is a ruby, can't you see?
youre right. looks cheap. and they need to write "RED" on it in a couple more places. fugly.
this is a cinema camera. not something you carry around for fun. the teasers and hype seem to have aroused gadget people, but this isn't a gadget person's camera. it is in the neighborhood of an XLH1 or EX-1. in no way is this meant to be a "shooters" camera.
near the ex-1? you are wrong my friend.
ex-1 records 1080p.
these record anything from 2K to (as it was announced just now) 28K
That's everything from 4 megapixels to 260 megapixels.
Way ahead of the ex-1.
It's a shoulder mounted laser!
But seriously, it appears to be a modular SLR body.
... Perhaps one that can take stereoscopic images. Since this image looks like a detachable EVF:

And this suggests it can take two of them:

I would keep this thing away from the Allspark cube...
still, i've seen great cameras with massive megapixels beaten by a 6MP point and shoot in image quality...
modular or not... lets see some image quality comparisons... D3 beating ISO or E-3 beating autofocus speed?
I don't think so...
So my dear RED camera, strut you stuff and let me drool ....
Though technically not an SLR.
@jorvay
True. But as there's no existing term that better describes this new wave of mirror-less, interchangeable lens cameras, "SLR" has to due.
I posted a summary of the announcement and modified their spec table to show the prices and estimated release dates right along with the models. If you're interested in this announcement it's worth checking out...

@Plothole
I know what you mean. With Cameras like this and the Panasonic G1, It's getting harder to assume good camera = dSLR. I suppose they are still dSL cameras, just no R. dSL...I could get used to that.
So how many cameras' ***es is this one going to kick?
17,500 dollars worth
Is the gallery not working right for me, or are these teaser images really all like 50px tall?
No, they are really 50, or rather 117px tall.
How many more teasers am I going to have to see?.....................
no more teasers, tomorrow is the 13th, the day of unveiling.
God help us if Jim Jannard, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison ever do a business venture together...
It is very rare that anyone on this site actually says anything funny, despite all the attempts at humor. However, that thought is going to have me chuckling for weeks! I actually think the universe would probably implode into an ego singularity if you just got those three together in too small a room, but the idea of them all working together is hilarious.
"More RED Scarlet and EPIC pics sure to induce endless HAL 9000 references"
its a sex toy
I don't want to know what kind of guys/girls you've been with that use such a sex toy..
Good God, how much does that thing weigh?
Since the display image keeps changing: my question was relating to what appears to be a video camera.
15-25/2.8? Sweet. Gigantic, but sweet.
Eh, does anyone else find they're teasers kinda gimicky?
Ignore my crappy grammar...
You have to admit that they're working. I haven't seen this much attention paid to them before.
thought I'd take a break from the insanity at the red forums and give my two cents over here. I am very excited to see where this is talking the "film" world. The fact that the entry camera can be configured to do a pro digital cameras job, or a cinema cameras job... with fully upgradable internals as well as externals is awesome for the indies!
Dear Engadget.
It's 2008. Please update your gallery code so we don't need a full page refresh when navigating through images. Google "ajax" for help.
Thank you
wow, these are almost as ugly, design wise, as his awful sunglasses.
If Jim Jannard was stuck inside a Transformers comic, it would drive him mad, because his 10,000$ 4K 3D camera would still only take badly drawn cartoons.
*wanders off*
Now call me stupid but is this thing rather a DSLR or a HD-video cam? What are the specs?
Anyway, to me it just looks ugly. But since it's a professional tool maybe the looks don't count that much.
Full specs are up. 28K video is insane. 261MP still? Jeez.
However, since the "brain" with the full frame sensor is $7000 alone, how exactly is this a 5DII killer in that regard?
Upon further inspection, the full frame brain is $12000. Even worse.
I hope the scarlet will also let you shoot in 1080P too so I can save space on the memory card.
3k is crazy, but most of my projects are SD let alone going to film out or digital theater.
Still this is the camera to own! Screw Panasonic, Sony, and Canon they have weak sauce.
i can't begin to contemplate how stupid this comment is. have you every been to NAB? do you even know what cameras this Red thing competes with? this is jerry bruckheimer territory. kevin smith would not have made Clerks on one of these. gauzy wedding videographers and porn houses will not be buying these.
"sauce is weak" who the hell talks like that? do you work in a greek deli?
261 MP? I thought that even Hasselblads mid format maxes out at 50 MP or so? That IS insane. With its bulkiness it'll only work in the studio.
$ 12000 doesn't even seem that much to me.
Erm.... so it's the camera version of Nordberg's gun?
You're kidding, right? $12,000 for a sensor that's utterly unusable without another $20k worth of addons? And this is going to compete in the current market HOW exactly? For professional movie studios? Sure. I'll grant that a $100,000 camera might even be a bargain for them.
But for everyone else in the real world? Not so much. A nice idea. But 100% impractical to compete with dSLR manufacturers.
Sure, interchangeability is nice. But at that cost, I could buy a new top of the line camera every year and still come out ahead.
RED isn't a consumer camera company. Jannard has said that repeatedly in the past. Their cheapest option is $2,500 for pete's sake!
Jannard was sick of paying $9.50 to get into a movie, so he made these suckers for the major movie studios, hoping the savings would trickle down.
it looks like it's been constructed from technics Lego..
You have to admit, though... a Lego-constructed camera would be pure awesome.
So when shooting RAW this baby shoots out more data than the LHC!
Can someone explain how people store these kind of vast datastreams.
The RED designers obviously slept through "Less is more" class.
While RED certainly deserve kudos for their cine cameras, as a DSLR, this is impractical from many ways.
Relative to a DSLR
1. It's big
2. I assume its weight is like its size
3. It's expensive (dSLR FF cameras range $2700 - $8,000) -- this thing will go, what, $20,000 dressed up?
4. "no mirror"? Fine, Canon just have to revive their 'pelicule' design from the EOS-1n. (semi-silvered mirror, 1 stop of light loss to the sensor, 4ms shutter delay (v. 40ms or so for mirror raising SLR's). Canon are king at DSLR noise. The loss of 1 stop at the sensor will not be missed.
I'm happy RED are jumping in. Nothing like competition to keep everyone on their toes.
By the time this thing comes to market, Canon will likely be at 28 - 32 Mpix (36x24mm) and at a much lower price, weight and size.
The current crop of full frames, except those by Nikon of course, are apparently already out resolving most lenses. Thus 28-32 probably isn't going to do anyone any good on 35mm camera.
*"35mm equivalent camera" I mean.
I would never buy that. It wont compete with any of the current SLR's. RED makes way overpriced shit that few people buy. I'm surprised their company isn't bankrupt yet.
I'd like to hear the author's comment about the rationale for calling this a 5DMkII killer given that the price of the Full Frame "brain" (the FF35) is $12K vs. the 5DMkII at approx $2,700. If you believe that the 2/3" sensor (at $2,500 for the brain) is equivalent to the 5DMkII, I'd like to know why and based on what measurements.
I agree w/ the previous poster(s) that said this is simply not aimed at the same market as pro-sumer dSLRs.
Matt
Replying to "Back it up"
Yep. I understand that. However, what is the FOV of a 24 mm wide angle lens on a 2/3" sensor vs. that of the full frame sensor on the 5D MkII? How is the 2/3 inch sensor noise profile compared to the 5D Mk 2? What is the difference in depth of field for a 2/3" sensor vs. a full frame sensor? If it is going to kill the 5D Mk II, then it has to be superior in all aspects, not just video, right? Or does it only kill the video part of the 5D Mk II -- which is valid, but if that's the case, then why not just say it? And if it takes the FF35 to equal or surpass all of those aspects of the 5D Mk II, then is it really a 5D Mk II "killer"?
A lego camera looks better than this..
Damn fugly... professional tool or not.
They should probably slap a couple more of that awful logo, more red buttons and write "red" all over the place.
This is what all the hype was about? A stupid camcorder that almost no one will ever buy? Come on.
Almost no one? Considering the RED One has sold over 5000 units at a starting price of $17,500 plus lenses, accessories etc I think it is quite likely that this setup will sell quite well.
This thing is Fugly.
What is with the ugly RED all over the place. RED RED RED RED RED RED RED RED RED RED STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Imagine Canon making their cameras wrapped in Louis Vitton style fabric with Canon all over it. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!
Besides, why all of their products look like they are made our of LEGO?????? Anyone?
These cameras compete with half-million-dollar Panaflex 35-mm motion picture cameras, not Canon and Nikon DSLRs.
Call me when there is a hands on or when it takes a picture.
Bottom line on RED Scarlet is, that it is going to make filmmaking affordable for those who want it. Video is rubbish in rubbish out, so why not shoot RED? Capturing in RED raw sounds awesome to me. Whether you end up needing highest res or not, it's there once you have finished your edit, or output to pro res or HD. If your client has the money to use your work at highest quality, you're in like Flynn.
By the time Scarlet comes to market too, there'll be improved integration and workflows with editing software.
It all adds up to something worth waiting for. Go for it RED! ; )
it looks like it's been constructed from technics Lego.. so it's the camera version of Nordberg's gun?confirm
