RED's Digital Still and Motion Camera System now official
After a morning of drip-fed images, RED just went official with its DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera) System. The system starts with your choice of the professional Scarlet or "master professional" EPIC brains which can then be bunged into about 2,251,799,813,685,248 possible camera configurations, RED only half-jokingly chides. The brains are built upon Mysterium-X and Mysterium Monstro sensors which start at 2/3-inch and end at a whopping 6x17-cm -- when a new sensor comes out you just upgrade the brain. Scarlet will launch in 4 choices ranging from $2,500 (and possibly less) to $12,000 with a variety of lens mounts (yes, Canon and Nikon) capable of shooting 3K @120fps on up to 6K @30fps. Epic will offer similar mounts with capabilities spanning 5K @100fps ($28k) to 9K @50fps ($45k) -- a 28K system hitting 25fps is expected in 2010 for $55k. Still image resolutions will range from 4.9 megapixels to a freakish 261 megapixels. The first Scarlet systems could come as early as Spring of 2009 while EPIC should arrive by summer. Of course, the brain is just the beginning of the costs. RED also introduced a 3D camera configuration today in true, "one more thing" fashion. See all the details in the gallery below, 3D camera after the break.

I wouldn't know where to begin with this thing. It's like Voltron but in camera fashion.

Sorry - that stupid comment above was meant as a reaply - look at my name - im new :(
@guy-montag: The patronising part-timer.
It's plain to see that you have more money than sense, so I'll tell you what...why don't you get back to topic and put your money down for a new system from RED? That'll be money well spent in your book, won't it?
As you said:
"...there are times when I prefer film over digital, though it's always been for aesthetic reasons"
WHAT OTHER REASON WOULD THERE BE GUY?! That's my point, there will always be a market for film for this exact reason.
Digital is more convenient, faster easier to process and turn around, edit etc....yes Guy, we all know that, thanks. And the quality is quickly becoming near to that of film (and before you get all high again - E6 and print film quality have a lot more to do with the person doing the development and printing than the photographer, I know) That's why I have used digital equipment for the past 5 years for clients work, on location and in studio, and film for my portfolio and personal projects
Film will always have a market for producing the best quality photographs & prints (with a soul), albeit a diminishing one for economic reasons. And that's not just some nostalgic tosh either, film can be a pain to work with at times and sometimes it can go horribly wrong, but when it all works the rewards are amazing. The one thing I have noticed with a lot of clients since digital took over is that expectations of quality has decreased and expectations for creativity and speed of turn-around has increased. There are many varying reasons for this.
I have yet to see any digitally produced photograph that can get anywhere close to the quality and aesthetics produced from Fujichrome Velvia film then printed on super saturated Fujiflex or similar chrome paper, it has a translucent, three dimensional 'feel' that draws you in, and when you see a print 10ft by 3ft right in front of your nose, you just know it's shot with film. Digitally produced images, in my opinion, always lack this 'feel' probably because they are always over-produced in photoshop and take on an edge of an artificial look about them. The 'too good to be true ' look.
It's film's imperfections that will always make it a clear winner in my book when it come to absolute quality and feel, it's a chemical process that changes with time and temperature, just like we do. It's organic...but for all my work i'm delighted to use digital because it pays the bill quicker!
This is fantastic, but not affordable. Shame.
Why is nobody mentioning that there's no publicly-available computer with the processing power to render these videos? Buy a Red, spend just as much on your tower.
Will it blend?
Hey guys, I am looking to purchase some used reds or scarlets. any body have any or can you direct me to somebody that can help. Thanks
