Nokia 5800 XpressMusic now listed at €429 for Spain, up from €279

Well, it looks like folks in Europe (or Spain, at least) already sold on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic could be in for a bit more than they bargained for, as the phone is now listed on Nokia.es for €429 (or just under $550) which, even given the now weaker Euro, is quite a leap from the €279 price for Europe that Nokia first announced just over a month ago. That still gets you an unlocked phone, however, and your choice of red, blue, or black colors, though it'll no doubt give some folks cause to reconsider the increasingly plentiful touchscreen phone options out there these days.

Douche.
i hope you die a painful death :(
I hope it's much cheaper when it's locked to voda or O2.
Still cheaper than iphone no matter which way you look at it.
Hahahahahaha that was LAME!!!!! 170€ more than expected! I think its time to stop waitin for this shit and buy myself a nice cheap phone.
It's actually 150€ more than announced, but don't let third grade mathematics stop your laughing.
I suggest you play the thumb game. Put one thumb in your mouth, put your other thumb up your ass... count to 10 and switch!
I Want one of these, I just can't sit around and wait for T-Mobile to bring this. But I also need a job to, lol
Mabye you should spend your time looking for one, instead of sitting at home and posting asinine comments on Engadget.
i really was considering this phone, but not for the price. this better not turns out to be true, or at least not in germany. else i guess i just have to sit out my contract with my the crappy winmo device i got right now...
When does Q1 2009 start (Date)
Maybe January 2009...
I believe it depends on the company... Not everyones fiscal year ends at the same time, however most companies FY08 ended a month or two ago.
Q1 2009 is referring to calendar year, not fiscal year, I believe. Means January, as it has been said.
It includes 100 euro subscription to the nokia online music store with unlimited downloads for one year.
I seriously thought 279 euro included the "comes with music"...
Wow, engadget have missed the mark here. Barely anyone who buys a phone gets it through nokia. I would guess at free on a £20/25 mo 18month contract, based on it being a midrange phone.
Most definitely. I think the original price they had was subsidised on a network - something the americans know very little about ;)
A typical subsidy would be €200 in most European countries, not over €400. This is a midrange phone at a high-end price.
It took me a while to realise but nokia have always sold their phones for more than their quoted price. I'am not that scared now. In fact looking forward to it now.
I visited the nokia shop in london a few weeks ago. They had a 5800 on display.. behind glass.. Couldn't actually tell if it was a real or mock unit, but did look a bit plastic. Well done Nokia, you've manged to scrap in at about the same time the last other vendor released a new touch screen phone (storm, X1, iphone, HTCs many) Granted you did release the very under developed S90 7710 handset a few years before RIM and Apple et al, but missing the xmas sales in major markets, that is SO par for the nokia course. I could wander into any of the 5 phone stores less than 5 mins from my front door and buy any one of the other leading brands' phones.. but not the new nokia.
I enjoyed making the sales guy in the shop squirm.. So I'll be able to get it in December, right? Oh I could try coming back then and seeing if I could pre-order? Well, I can atleast see it working before that seeing as you have one in the shop? Oh noone in the shop has seen it working? I could go and buy an iphone across the road in Apple's flagship store? It is available now though? Oh your's will be an iphone killer? Yeah, but it doesn't have a 100th of the applications, or TV shows and your "comes with music" might not work on my mac and doesn't have the backing of many? Ok.. so December? January.. He suggested february.. very very very lame.. very typically nokia.
disappointed
Why are you comparing it with the iphone? Nokia has made it clear that this is a mid range handset, not the flagships that you are comparing it to. Nokia have their flagship phone available, ready to buy. Its called the N96, and in my opinion is the phone that I would pick out of the current crop of high end phones, as it is one of the only ones *without* a touch screen.
Oh, Apple fanboy? Yes, you can cross the street and buy iPhone and shot bothering other people.
@7710user
I agree with you on some points and not on others.
First of all, Nokia's product to market lag is unacceptable in the mobile phone industry. They need to seriously speed this up or they'll end up with another N96 scenario on their hands - a great phone that got gazzumped by the Samsung i8510 (Samsung have their product to market cycle absolutely spot on). Not having it ready for the main European Christmas markets is folly because Europe - along with Asia - remains its key market.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
However...
S60 has more apps than Apple. Sorry, that's just fact. Apple have a better distribution mechanism but don't confuse this with volume. Similarly you can get TV shows on the Nokia in the same way you can the iPhone - by downloading them and installing them. Finally Comes with Music is Mac compatible.
So you go to one thing right and three things wrong which gives you a hit rate of 25%. Must do better.
Please, don't take me for a apple fanboi, I resent that. I've been waiting since 2004 for the next gen nokia touch screen.. The fact they "had" one in the store but weren't prepared to show it to any customers narked me a little..
I didn't compare it to the iphonem the store clerk did "its the iphone killer" he said. I frankly laughed pointing out alteast I could cross the road and buy an iphone straight away and not have to wait 4 months!
That doesn't mean I want an iphone.. I want a 5800 damnit! Working on getting one shipped from spain at the mo!
The mac compatibility, number of apps and released date were all things I discussed with the sales clerk.. Basically poking holes in his knowledge of this upcoming product. Not only do Nokia lag considerably with their release schedule, they display a white elephant that no one seems to know anything about!
As for apps, the app store has "As of September 18, 2008, there are 3,465 third-party applications" according to wikipedia.
According to symbiangear.com there are 980 apps available across 20 categories for the N95+8G. I do appreciate this is not the only source, but its a start and finding 2000 other apps they don't sell would be hard work, so I don't think I got that point wrong
I write Symbian apps (working on device drivers at the mo) but in under a year the iphone app strategy has at least come close to what S60 range has to offer. bit sickening really.
as a side note, I tried to install putty on my gf's E90 yesterday.. downloading from sourceforge via the browser.. it crashed repeatedly and I had to use bookmarks to eventually download.. That is not something an iphone user has to deal with, so this new phone doesn't really try and compete.. but that goes for the entire nokia range.. I think that is a shame since I really enjoy working with S60 and Symbian.
As for TV shows, there isn't the same syndicated service that apple offer. You can copy video files onto your sd card.. that goes for most phone (ha 'cept the iphone obviously ;) but this phone is not going to compete with the iphones media company bound approach any time soon. (though the iplayer service is interesting)
I know its not a flagship either. They've been burnt before releasing a new tech as a flagship phone then finding it doesn't get well accepted) I'm certain I will buy a flagship touchy when they get round to it, maybe in a years time.
I'm a unix and mac user. I don't use iTunes and I avoid DRM so the comes with music doesn't bother me. I know it will definitely appeal to many. I want a replacement for my 2G, non-wifi, non-(built-in)-gps 7710. I love my 7710, I've not owned a non-symbian phone since the 7650 (technically I owned an Ericsson symbian touch screen before that, but it was a bit proprietary).
I just don't understand the delay (or maybe I just don't want to) I know it can't be testing because nokia have never sold a S60 phone that wasn't incredibly buggy at launch!
Did anyone seriously think the price without taxes would be the street price in nok's own store? In their finnish press release they already said the final price would be around 430€
Not 279 any more? No deal!
It is 279 euros without VAT!!! So 330 euros.
Perhaps the web-master is dyslexic? 249 Euro? :D Of course, that is unlocked and unsubsidized. My guess is it will be 249 or 279 Euro when subsidized...
Hehehehe, you've got to accept it, the evil laugh WAS funny!
By the way, I still think iphone is for highschool girls and/or dumb adults in general...
Stalemate, you made my day. =)
I think the name "XpressMusic" is really dumb. The fad of using X's ended about 5 years ago and so did that of using NamesLikeThis. And nobody is impressed anymore by the fact that a phone has music features. Every phone has music features. I don't care if this is the most revolutionary music phone ever, it's still a dumb name. In any case, not that I know that much about the phone, it looks like they're trying to make it an iPhone killer (like the BlackBerry Storm) so they really shouldn't have such a crappy name. Before I saw pictures of the phone I thought of one of those crappy Motorolas that you can get for free with a contract. No thanks.
"What kind of phone do you have?"
"Oh.. it's, um.. a Nokia... Xpress..Music..."
"oh. huh."
Yeah but most of us buy phones for what they do rather than what they're called.
Just sayin'.
You know what, I think the name " i " is really dump. The fad of using i's ended about 5 years ago and so did that of using NamesLikeThis. And I'm really impressed by the fact that a phone has music features. Not every phone has music features. I think this is the most revolutionary music phone ever, it's still got a cool name. In any case, not that I know that much about the phone, it looks like they're trying to make it kick iPhone in the ass so they really should have such a cool name. After I saw pictures of the phone I thought of it being the best phone they've ever made. Thank you Nokia.
"What kind of phone do you have?"
"Oh.. it's Nokia XpressMusic 5800 aka Tube..."
"oh. and I got this.... pathetic/much-hyped/overrated/overpriced.....iPhone...."
"Good luck with that!"
In the press release it said: € 279 before taxes and subsideries!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did any of you look at the site ????
Below the price it clearly says contains a voucher for 100euros for music downloading so the phones price is still 330 euros...
The important question is if the phone will be available without the voucher.
ALeX xD
What? I don't find that anywhere. If you mean the text featured in the Screenshot here at engadget it only tells you that you don't have to pay shipping costs when buying for more than 100 euros or if you buy 2 or more Accessories.
430€ is still a great price for a phone like this and it will drop after it becomes available everywhere. I think the N95 cost around 600-700€ around its release and now it's down to 440€ officially or ~350€ unofficially. The same thing will most probably happen to the price of the 5800. And when it gets subsidized it will be ultra cheap.
It would be great if they gave people the option to buy this without the voucher for the Nokia music store, and then cut 100 of the price. I don't know about you guys, but I get my music from other sources. ;)
I think if you wait a bit you may well find that this price refers to the handset WITH the music subscription, the original price quoted was the Nokia 5800 MINUS the music subscription!
MORE SHOCK HORROR Nokia 5800 euros 999.99 that is what it is being offered for in Finland! but that price when you check it out is "Pre Order"
This is just lazy journalists trying to make a quick story out of NOTHING again
No, this is about Nokia sending out misleading press releases. They told everybody that the phone "comes with music" and is below €300. Now it turns out that the phone either comes without music or is more than €400.
When you have to pay more than €100 for a 1-year music subscription the whole point of "comes with music" is gone because Nokia had been trying to tell us that "comes with music" would somehow make music shopping cheaper than iTunes, which it doesn't, so it's a failure.
The price is unacceptable, I was waiting for this phone to be released but there is no way that I'm going to spend 430 euros on it.
I'm going to wait for the apple to reduce iphone coz it is expected or I'll go for samsung omnia...
fu*cK u Nokia!
Damn, i was waiting for a price like 350E with all the taxes included... Time to get me a nice decent phone like N82 and forget about this
As long as i can buy this for around $300 whenever it comes out in the States then i will buy it. I do not care about any comes with music.
c'mon folks why all the complaining like grumpy old men or women? a lot of people i mean a lot waited in line for days just to be the first ones to get an expensive iphone. people actually waited in line to get that expensive phone and they did not give a damn about the ridiculous price tag on it. the 5800 has capabilities and features that are way more than the iphone can do. i will never get the iphone because for me the price tag on it w/o subsidies is not worth it at all. i am not fond of irreplaceable batteries and just because you own an apple product doesn't mean that you are cool.
Is it not worth the price tag on it compared to the iphone's features and to what it can do?
