Remember just a few days back when the
HTC MAX 4G AKA the world's very first GSM / WiMAX handset was announced? Well, some pretty sweet footage of the device -- which boasts 8GB of flash memory, GPS, WiFi, triband EDGE and WIMAX support -- has surfaced, and we have to say it doesn't look too shabby. The video's in Russian -- because you can only get the phone on Scartel's Yota network in... you guessed it, Russia, but from the sounds of it, the demonstrator is stoked. Check it out after the break.

deyanimay @ Nov 15th 2008 10:12AM
I'm with you, i would also sell your car for one of these.
VFK @ Nov 15th 2008 10:37AM
The entire video is about Yota software and services, like Yota mobile Internet, Yota live TV, Yota music, etc. I haven't heard anything about the phone itself. Even while comparing this device to iPhone and HTC Diamond - not a word. But it looked rather snappy on that network, especially with live TV (at least they claimed it was live).

In russia, phone touches, talks about you!
Vishnu @ Nov 15th 2008 10:12AM
Please.. I just hope they've used a touch capacitive Glass screen for this phone unlike the plastic touch resistive screen of the HTC Touch HD.
titanium man @ Nov 15th 2008 12:34PM
I don't know about glass or plastic, but i am under the impression WinMo currently doesn't support capacitive touchscreens, and that probably means the surface has to be plastic to be pressure sensitive . Anyone know for sure? This looks very much like HTC touch hd with wimax.
Ray @ Nov 15th 2008 2:33PM
NOOO, i want to keep resistive screens! The iphone type screens dont work with gloves or stylus!
Not to mention, these new high res displays by htc are a lot more sensitive than the old days, these perform really good. Winmo just needs to be a more finger friendly OS, forget all the talk about needing capacitive displays.
MikeWard1701 @ Nov 15th 2008 2:50PM
I second Rays' comments.
Windows Mobile (in its current form) has functions (and resolutions) that require the accuracy of a stylus. Capacitive screens don't offer the finess you need in WM. Plus as Ray said, you can't use them while wearing gloves or with a conventional stylus. You'd need some kind of powered stylus like the digitizer pens of tablet PCs.

It's in Russian. But I hope it'll be still pretty understandable for you.
If you have any questions on certain points of tec. specs, ask and I'll translate it. ;)
Regards,
Алексей.
P.S. Russia is not Soviet any more... fortunately. Maybe you'll understand it later.. in a decade or so. 8\

What is the resolution of the main camera? Does it have a plastic touch resistive screen or a glass touch capacitive screen?

The main camera is a 3.2 mpx. Disappointing I know.
Here is the list of full specs by gsmArena:

neodorian @ Nov 15th 2008 4:23PM
@Shravan: the megapixels shouldn't really matter considering it's just a cell phone camera. It won't make much difference if it was 5 or 10 even because the lens is tiny and cheap.

Im surprised this isnt running Android like the Dream. Anyone know why?
John @ Nov 15th 2008 11:39AM
Because Yota didnt request Android in the device spec.
Nomi @ Nov 15th 2008 11:38AM
Does this also use Qualcomm's 528mhz? I am waiting for the next gen faster CPUs...

What in the hell was wrong with that guy's voice? He sounded like Kermit the Frog or something. Anyway, this phone is awesome, Sprint needs to get something like this and fast if they expect to get people to use their WiMax network!
P.S. Sprint also needs to launch their WiMax outside of Baltimore.
Marcus @ Nov 15th 2008 11:56AM
From Yota's site I can't see any 3.5mm jack in the 360 degree viewing mode... WTF!?
john @ Nov 15th 2008 12:32PM
Seems like most/all HTC phones rely up on a micro-USB port for audio+data+charging, so you need a micro-USB to 3.5mm adapter to use 3.5mm headsets.

john @ Nov 15th 2008 12:27PM
With WiMAX being a very small niche these days, I'd still want UMTS/HSPA on the thing.
That, quad-band GSM/EDGE instead of tri-band, and the Fuze/Raphael/Touch-Pro side-slide keyboard ... with Android as the OS, and I'd love to own this phone.
eatbuckshot @ Nov 15th 2008 1:09PM
windows mobile 6.1 is not fit for this device!
FASTER ARGH
Surur @ Nov 15th 2008 6:02PM
It must really hurt to see all the great hardware running Windows Mobile.
Here is a question- Which other mobile OS supports such a wide range of hardware and software? Screens from 240x240 to 800x480. From GPRS to WIMAX, from 56 keys keyboards to no keyboard at all. It goes on and on.
Sure they can install android, but then the video camera wont even work.
eatbuckshot @ Nov 15th 2008 8:11PM
I was hoping for, if it really exists, windows mobile 6.5 or for wm7. I wasn't so much advocating android or anything other than WM for that matter. Currently I prefer WM because of its compatibilities that you've mentioned, configurability, and third party application support (so that even I may develop some apps with their SDK) That's all the strong points however Windows Mobile's GUI, its look and feel is quite mediocre. It takes too long for the menus or for the frequently accessed, such as contacts and appointments to just .. open. To watch and see the screen try to redraw gives a feeling of sluggishness even if it may only be for a second. I feel as though this is a recently introduced "feature" of Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5 and 6. My father used to have a phone that ran Windows Mobile 2003; I thought it was absolutely the best phone ever and I wanted one. I opted for a 6700, the successor to my dad's 6600, which came with wm5 and I immediately thought there was a problem with it because it blatantly "felt" much slower than the 6600 which executed everything instantaneously. After a bit of research I found out it was because 2003 uses only ram for storage and programs whereas 5 and 6 uses the much slower flash memory(there maybe fast flash but they weren't put in my phone..) for the os. Luckily though I could overclock every component in my phone about 50%: cpu 600mhz, bus 300mhz, ram 150mhz. This significantly improved the response however it still doesn't achieve 2003's level of response. I don't have an iPhone or Touch, and I don't want either but there's one thing Apple got right: the responsive user interface. Just from the unlocking screen there is a tremendous difference in response; the little bar is actually constantly under your finger and moves almost in real time. I laud HTC for their attempts to create a more flowing and responsive GUI but there still are a few slowdowns and random places where you're taken back to the normal GUI which kind of takes away the entire experience, but maybe that's just me. I'm very glad Apple came out with the iPhone, there were no competitors for Microsoft so there wasn't any reason for them or thought to improve their OS then.
Vaibhav @ Nov 15th 2008 4:30PM
Is it just me or the MAX actually looks a lot better that the iPhone.
