800MHz CPU-packing P565 handset appears on ASUS site
ASUS' P565 has been pretty much unofficial until now, though we did see some alleged photos and specs of the device not terribly long ago. The phone has just been officially listed on the ASUS site, however, and we've got a quick rundown of its stats (which are pretty much exactly what we'd seen before). The Glide UI-sporting, HSDPA smartphone -- which ASUS claims is the "fastest business PDA phone" in the world -- runs Windows Mobile 6.1, has an 800MHz Marvell CPU, a 2.8-inch VGA touchscreen, 256MB flash memory and 128MB of DDR SDRAM, 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, and a microSD slot with SDHC support. Like we said, none of this is a big surprise, but it's the first official look we've had at the handset, though we're still waiting on word about pricing and availability.

Too bad it will be $900.00 and we (US) will never see it.
deyanimay @ Nov 16th 2008 11:14PM
I bet they'll sell it in the us under the eeepc brand.
omar @ Nov 16th 2008 11:15PM
:(

"The world's fastest processor at 800Mhz CPU"
... do they want to expand on that a little bit? Adding mobile or cell phone before processor might help... a little....
1234321 @ Nov 16th 2008 11:32PM
don't forget intel used to make those CPUs, and they kinda followed the old intel way where more MHz doesn't exactly mean it's faster
jivetrky @ Nov 17th 2008 9:00AM
@Pip
I'd think they mean "compared to any other CPU @800mhz, this one is the fastest"
OCEAN 'CLAK' 20th @ Nov 16th 2008 11:15PM
'i' like this knock off, except the OS windows mobile lol, but yeah i like it
Ray @ Nov 16th 2008 11:17PM
All that speed for what? I can't think of a single none emulator application that will benefit from 800mhz... all multitasking aside. Winmo apps just aren't that demanding.
Just put xp on the thing and call it a day lol
bot @ Nov 17th 2008 12:25AM
"All that speed for what?"
"all multitasking aside"
Um, you just answered your own question?
Brandon @ Nov 19th 2008 8:42PM
Wouldn't RAM be more suited for multi tasking, rather than processor speed? Most mobile devices have 64-256 MB of RAM available.
eatbuckshot @ Nov 17th 2008 4:32PM
winmo 6.1 on my 6700's 416 mhz xscale is so unresponsive. Even after overclocking the cpu to 600mhz, bus to 300mhz, and ram to 150mhz, it still doesn't match winmo 2003 in response...
i hope winmo 6.5 or 7 fairs better or have faster processors..
digitallysick @ Nov 16th 2008 11:18PM
to bad it runs windows mobile, its a horrible os for a touchscreen phone
nerdtalker @ Nov 16th 2008 11:27PM
Does using it make you do what your avatar is doing?
iNToIT @ Nov 16th 2008 11:19PM
Battery Life? How efficient is this 800mhz proc compared to those on other devices when using battery draining functions such as wifi?
And, will we get the full 800mhz? Many devices are processor capped in software/OS to extend the battery life. The G1 has a 5xxmhz proc, but it only runs at 3xxmhz. I'm sure as they improve the OS and apps to make them more efficient, we'll see more speed (and as it is, the G1 is quite snappy, not slow.) But for the p565, I guess we'll wait and see what we actually get.
Haikibutsu @ Nov 16th 2008 11:21PM
Not to bring the iPhone into it, but maybe it will have a sort of a switch like 3G vs GSM that is found in the iPhone's settings?
Oh, and ocean needs to be banned.
KarlW @ Nov 17th 2008 12:29AM
It ought to have some sort of dynamic clocking to only put out 800Mhz when you need it. Otherwise yes, the battery will die several times a day.
I still wouldn't buy an ASUS phone. You get the feeling they're just entering the handset business because Apple is, and they feel obliged to compete on every front. They're the sort of company that will have no shame in stuffing projectors and candy dispensers in phones if it makes them feel 'high tech'. You wouldn't see rubbish like that coming out of HTC.
This is classic engineering by marketing people. They have no idea about what makes a good project, they just want something to make a bullet point out of.
Reader @ Nov 16th 2008 11:20PM
Damn I read headset, as in bluetooth device, and was really excited.
Shravan @ Nov 16th 2008 11:21PM
Slap that bad boy processor on the HD already ! And then.. me want !
Adderz @ Nov 16th 2008 11:24PM
"800MHz Marvell CPU"
I want to see a comparison, as we all know now that megahertz is not everything.
Aguiluz @ Nov 16th 2008 11:28PM
It's Marvellous for sure!
steve @ Nov 16th 2008 11:52PM
so far i'd still prefer the 412MHz of my shiny 3G iphone.. everyone with a different opinion burn in usability hell.
eatbuckshot @ Nov 17th 2008 4:37PM
Just found out that, that processor is essentially Intel's XScale. It seems they are just upping the mhz

Fusion Fuzo @ Nov 16th 2008 11:32PM
NICE, If they could make the screen as big as the silver bezel bit, this would be a must get.
mackid105 @ Nov 16th 2008 11:36PM
i'm calling it now IPHONE KILLER!
sorry i had too
ethana2 @ Nov 16th 2008 11:38PM
The iPhone Killer will not be a windows mobile device.
austin @ Nov 17th 2008 12:00AM
most likely an andriod device.
but right now i dont see the G1 entering 'iphone killer' territory. maybe the G2(?)
spacegravity4me @ Nov 17th 2008 12:41AM
no... no you didn't
Dave Chappelle @ Nov 17th 2008 5:05AM
no that would be something pathetic in features but DAMN THIN.
Sergio @ Nov 17th 2008 8:58AM
Whhatttt? The fruit phone was killed many months ago.
sam @ Nov 17th 2008 10:01AM
Agrred, the iPhone killer will not be Windows Mobile based. At least not any current iteration of Windows Mobile. Who knows - Microsoft could get lucky and WM7 could actually be a good operating system.
Android is promising, but not nearly there yet.
Currently there are no "iPhone killers" on the horizon.
E. Leigh @ Nov 16th 2008 11:40PM
Haha, every time I see an Asus statement like "longest battery life ever" or "best netbook in the world" or "fastest business PDA phone in the world", I think of the SNL skit where they have Ana Gasteyer as Celine Dion saying, "I am the best singer in the world!"
I feel like it's a "listen to Iman" business model. Don't question - just accept. Aww, Asus, you are always good for a laugh... (but I don't care how toyish your Eees look, that 900ha is pretty cool).
MyHeadisFed @ Nov 17th 2008 12:11AM
Yeah Asus is pretty cocky and they shit talk a whole lot more than they should but their products are generally pretty good and well priced.
Boards of Canada @ Nov 17th 2008 1:45AM
still less cocky than Nvidia and Apple. Asus is more clumsy...
thethirdmoose @ Nov 16th 2008 11:55PM
Looks like an HTC touch...
Phil @ Nov 17th 2008 12:08AM
eeePhone, including that awesome original oversized bezel.
Windzilla @ Nov 17th 2008 12:11AM
why is the first “i” in quotations in your comment?
John @ Nov 17th 2008 12:11AM
Too bad its a design knockoff of the first gen HTC Touch. But i guess all touchscreen phones have to sort of look alike.
DarkLight @ Nov 17th 2008 12:57AM
Exactly. It's funny to see all that people screaming "X looks like Y!", while totally ignoring the fact that there is a limit, no matter how creative you are.
If you push things further, you break the limit of practicality. All humans have similarly shaped bodies, so you CAN'T (because it's actually physically impossible) make, say, a perfectly ergonomic mouse whitout it looking like another perfectly ergonomic mouse.
Push things even further and you reach the limit of usability.
There's a point where it's impossible to innovate, no matter how hard you try. And we are reaching that point (at least in cellphones and PMPs)
scott @ Nov 17th 2008 12:31AM
it looks like my old pda.
joe blow @ Nov 17th 2008 1:05AM
This thing might actually run windows mob smoothly. Wi-Fi, GPS, mem slot, decent battery, nice screen. Was waiting for the NUVIphone but damn, I want one. Only 3m cam, but I can live with that.
Elkin @ Nov 17th 2008 1:15AM
I just remember of all I was able to do with my 800mhz P1 7 years
ago...
I wanna play Diablo II in this thing!!
Oli D @ Nov 17th 2008 2:58AM
i was just thinking the same thing....
fh @ Nov 17th 2008 6:31AM
ARM != x86
You won't get very far no matter how fast that thing is.
kingu @ Nov 18th 2008 9:17PM
What is it you want to use that you cant compile for ARM? Say "windows" and i will puke you down.
HemanC @ Nov 17th 2008 2:50AM
Asus hasn't release any popular phone since the white P535 in 2006. Let's how this one does with the 800 MHz marketing hype.
Oli D @ Nov 17th 2008 2:58AM
Someone get working on an ubuntu ditsro for that and im in,
im not having windows mobile on it for sure...
kingu @ Nov 18th 2008 9:12PM
agreed
Oli D @ Nov 17th 2008 3:00AM
i dont understand why it runs windows mobile, if it apparently has the fastest (cell) processor in the entire universe.
I have a little mini pc at home that is 800Mhz and it runs windows xp with trouble but ubuntu fine.
Give it a cut down 32bit OS like puppy and set it out into the wild asus!
linuxamp @ Nov 17th 2008 6:39AM
It doesn't have a cell processor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor)
Logboy @ Nov 17th 2008 3:17AM
Nice, but WinMo is the performance equalizer.
