LaCie's LaCinema Rugged multimedia HDD now available in US
We asked, and we're receiving. LaCie's LaCinema Rugged was initially announced across the pond late last month, yet we rough Americans were left wondering if it would ever see the light of day on US soil. Just in time for the holiday rush, LaCie has indeed announced US pricing and availability for the bulked up multimedia drive, and it's not like you even have to wait around to get your mitts on one. Try right now starting at $199.99, with sizes including 250GB, 320GB and 500GB.

Yes... I always wanted to be able to take my portable hard drive out into the rough wilderness! It's not camping without it!

BlurMagic is right, who really needs this product? Maybe tech savvy construction workers who need a hard drive with them at all times?

This is the most useless product. If I wanted to play movies off a hard drive I can think of a hundred different solutions that would work better and prob. cheaper too.

I don't get the point; hard drives are fragile enough, what would a case with some padding on the side help to mitigate G-forces enough that the HDD won't die when it's dropped?
Now if this were an SSD that would be a different story...

Easy, Android avatars!
This drive has an HDMI interface and 1080i output. As a videographer, I can bring it with me to a customer and show him what I've done so far. I think this drive is an excellent idea!

I like it too - only drawback is that it doesn't seem to play H.264. So maybe the WD media box is a better solution...

Personally I would rather use Popcorn Hour A-110. Its a really nice media extender that will allow you put in any drive. Allowing you to upgrade. It also has HDMI, component, composite, usb and ethernet. Doesn't get much better than that. =)

this is is really pretty cool, but I just don't need it. I've got computers, an xbox running xbmc, 500 GB time capsule....
If I were the type to travel a lot, or wanted to bring my home media setup to a friends house for a night or something, this would be awesome.
But I'm not.

I've had the iZak Media Player for years. Same thing, in fact I think Iomega or Lacie actually OEMed the technology at one point. The iZak is great in that it plays ISO DVD files directly along with a host of other formats including Xvid. I use it to keep the kids happy when visiting grandparents and such, bring the handheld hard drive, mini-USB ended power supply, video cable, and remote and they have 30 movies to pick from. It can also do music and pictures, and a few other tricks that I don't use...

This is definitely very cool if you travel a lot and don't want to have your "legitimate" tv shows and movies all on DVD's or on laptops with VGA cables/HDMI outputs and what not. The only draw back is that if you do travel a lot to warrant having this chances are you are too busy to be watching all that media anyways (especially since it can hold a decent amount of data). I would want one personally only if I was too lazy to run a massive VGA cable from my computer to the living room in my apartment, which I am not. I just have to go find a VGA cable long enough to do the trick. It is a bit pricey too, not to mention since its not a SSD, I wonder just how durable that casing is and if the HDD could really take the hauling of it back and forth without hard drive failure ensuing after a harsh fall.

Have had a mvisto for years. Looks like Macpower is selling to Iomega and Lacie among others.
Lots of reviews about their products in the press. Check out www.macpower.com.tw
Not sure how unibrain fits into the picture as they are not a hardware company?
Where as Macpower is a complete solution provider.
The big problem with these products is they are not wireless. That is key
everunman @ Nov 18th 2008 1:54AM
the picture quality of the lacie lacinema was not the best compared to the cheapo ebay divx players

On the upside it looks like a grenade. I'm sure that will finally bring the butch out of us lol.
