US TiVo users pick up Domino's Pizza ordering / tracking abilities
Clearly catering towards the wants, nay, needs of the average American couch potato is TiVo and Domino's Pizza, which have collaborated in order to bring on-sofa pizza ordering to broadband-connected TiVo subscribers. If you'll recall, this service was actually announced for Australia earlier this month, but users in the US of A get the first chance to indulge. 'Course, this is far from the first unorthodox method of ordering pizza, and the lack of a scheduled delivery option is certainly a weak point, but this widget does reveal that all sorts of differentiating applications could eventually find their way to a TiVo box near you. Feel free to give it a spin tonight, but don't blame us if that backlit remote gets dimmed from grease seeping into the crevices.

Too bad Domino's pizza tastes the same as the box it comes in...
bob sakamano @ Nov 17th 2008 11:08AM
so the rumors are true, you love to eat box!
AVG @ Nov 17th 2008 11:10AM
Ah, a full season of The Tyra Banks Show, YouTube clips of monkeys peeing in their mouths, and a foul tasting, unhealthy dinner all launched from the same remote... has humanity peaked?
tom @ Nov 17th 2008 11:17AM
Agree. There are better pizzas out there. Credit goes to Domino's for the innovation.
For those lazy bums who is unwilling to get their hands off the remote and get on a computer or grab the phone. They deserve it.!
y3k.nik @ Nov 17th 2008 11:31AM
Are human beings really headed towards what idiocracy said we would be?
Can i be put in a cryogenic sleep state to wake up 500 years from now to tell humanity to use water instead of Gatorade with electrolytes for plants please?

I'm pretty sure you just wanted to incorporate the movie idiocracy into your response, and if it wasn't for this subject we would have seen it elsewhere today
y3k.nik @ Nov 17th 2008 11:37AM
What can I say bob, its just a good movie!
AVG @ Nov 17th 2008 11:51AM
That was one of THE worst movies. Ever.

First one to reach "Morbidly Obese" wins!

Oh, c'mon. And reaching 5 inches for your cellphone and dialing on the keypad is "exercise?" Let's get real people, picking up the telephone, picking up a cellphone, even typing the keys on your keyboard are NOT that drastically different from picking up the remote to order pizza!
Based on this same argument, let's berate Netflix users for not walking into a Brick-n-Mortar, for shame!!!!
bob sakamano @ Nov 17th 2008 11:12AM
one more reason for the typical tivo customer not to leave their couch

I think Pizza Hut might have a problem with that.

use a proxy; I use HotSpot Shield; hardly any ads and it's not deadly slow. But I still think that it's stupid that Hulu doesn't work in Canada, but it's not their fault.

100 bucks worth of dominos? That is a serious stomach ache...
Dan @ Nov 17th 2008 11:33AM
Sorry for posting again, I must learn to post everything at once lol
Is this actually something new in America?
We've been able to order Dominos through the Sky box for years now and thats just over a standard phone line?! excuse my dumbness
BlurMagic @ Nov 17th 2008 11:40AM
dumbness excused. Dominoes has had this specific program out for about a year now. It was originally computer based and they just moved it to the TV so you don't actually even have to get up until your friggin doorbell rings. So new technology? No. New platform? Yes.
Maestro @ Nov 17th 2008 12:48PM

michaelportent @ Nov 17th 2008 12:16PM
Really it amazes me that Pizza Hut is so far behind the curve on the technology front. Granted, I prefer Domino's anyway, but right now they're just blowing all the American pizza chains out of the internet water with Pizza Tracker, etc.
gavinovz @ Nov 17th 2008 12:31PM
Someone should do a race to see if it takes longer just to call in an order or by TiVo.
Jeffrey Cerny @ Nov 17th 2008 12:46PM
Hardly one of the first unorthodox pizza ordering methods.
EBA's pizza in Hanover, New Hampshire (Dartmouth College) has been taking internet orders for well over a decade.

Nah!, i will wait for Mona pizza!. ;-)

Pizza quality and fat issues aside, I think this is a good idea. I've worked in pizza food service for a few years now, and have also experienced ordering over the phone and online. Phone ordering is only good for one person who knows exactly what they want, and do not want to use a credit card to pay for it. Online ordering is excellent for credit card transactions, but if a bunch of people are trying to figure out what they want, they either have to figure it out before going to the computer, or several people will have to crowd around a computer screen. Say you're having a party, and everyone wants pizza. You're already watching television, just fire up this software, and as a group you can all look at the menu comfortably, argue and fight over what you want, and place the order. In that type of situation, I think this is a good idea.
Is it contributing to the idiocracy of this world? Sure. But if you're trying to sell your product, wouldn't you want to have the most options for getting it to the customer?
Scott @ Nov 17th 2008 1:21PM
To even consider ordering a Dominos Pizza there better be a box underneath with another TIVO included. As a Chicagoan I would be embarrased to have Dominos delivered to my house.
Valicore @ Nov 17th 2008 1:45PM
Well sh*t. This is a fricken' public health hazard! Ordering pizza does not need to bee easier (and actually i didn't think of could be easier). As a marketing strategy, this is awesome: you get the person watching TV on the couch, they get hungry, see Domino's, order it, they get fatter Domino's gets richer. It doesn't get really expensive until five years later we're cutting a hole in the side of the person's house to crain-lift them to the hospital.

Inane_Asylum @ Nov 17th 2008 4:29PM

May I direct your attention to the Banana peeling simulator, the GPS with a cheap built-in mp3 player, robotic dogs that dance when you hook them up to your iPod...I could go on for hours...

Wow! Now figure out the beer part, and we're all set.

Domino's Pizza Ordering doesn't transmit Apt # (the second address field in your online account). I just found out trying the new feature and the delivery guy had to call and ask what apartment number I was in.
P.S. They also don't transmit the coupon specials from the Web site, so everything is just "retail." Nobody I know buys Domino's Pizza at retail prices!
Smith @ Nov 17th 2008 5:45PM
Now that is just flat cool. I don't have a Tivo or have pizza delivered; but we should have had something like this back in the 1980's(when we did used to have pizza delievered for some reason and back when I used to watch TV)!
JC @ Nov 17th 2008 7:05PM
This was available in South Africa in 2001 on DSTV(Satellite) and a phone line modem.
With Debonairs(Pizzas), Nandos(Grilled Chicken) ,Woolworths(Groceries) and a host of other fast food outlets.
Oh and it worked really well but at that time there wasnt sufficient internet penetration in SA for the service to survive.
pheer6224 @ Nov 17th 2008 8:53PM
We need a pizza ordering GUI standard and network. Call it PIZFI, make it free and bring it on.
Brase @ Nov 17th 2008 10:22PM
That's awsome! But Domino's Pizza is the worst I ever had!
