Kingston unveils 64GB DataTraveler 150 for $177
You've got entirely too many RAW files and uncompressed David Bowie albums to be slamming everything onto a 16GB thumbdrive, so Kingston Technology's coming to the rescue with a new pair of ultra-spacious DataTraveler 150s. Arriving in 32GB and 64GB flavors, the DT150 becomes the largest in the outfit's entire DataTraveler line, and it even works with Windows, OS X, Palm OS and Linux! Both sticks come with a five-year warranty (as if you won't lose it before then) and will sell for $132 and $177, respectively.

I'm guessing from those specs that you don't even know the difference between memory and hard drive space. Because if those were memory numbers...you should put those pc's out of their misery.

Ryan Trevisol @ Nov 20th 2008 10:00AM
Yes, but I want mine in USB 3.0. :-p
Jack @ Nov 20th 2008 7:58AM
That's not a bad price at all... especially since I can remember paying $97,00 for my first 1GB flashdrive.
Hotrod @ Nov 20th 2008 9:35AM
Right. I remember paying $80 for a 1GB SD card.
Almadi @ Nov 21st 2008 7:42PM
$259 here for 1GB, late 2004. It seems that USB drives are the only thing that are losing their value faster the stocks.
Vishnu Vadlamudi @ Nov 20th 2008 8:10AM
The price is great but I just wonder how fast the data transfer rate is. Doing a virus scan for a 64 Gb pen drive is definitely going to take a lot of time!
nanobis @ Nov 20th 2008 8:35AM
Just wait untill we get to USB 3, then these will be rocking.
Then i guess portable HDD wont be sticking round much longer, but i guess there storage will get better too. Who knows 1Tb pasport drives?
Arran @ Nov 20th 2008 8:11AM
These are growing at ridiculous rates, maybe one of the greatest exhibitors of Moore’s law. How long can the hard drive still hold out in terms of storage capacity over flash based storage?
Cantevid @ Nov 21st 2008 10:43AM
Charming appearance!
Patriks7 @ Nov 20th 2008 8:19AM
177$ for 64GB?! A year ago I bought a 4GB one for 100$!
If this will continue, soon we'll have a TB in our pocket :p
Billy Gun @ Nov 20th 2008 8:49AM
That's all I need 1tb pendrive. hope it comes soon.
JerkfacedFed @ Nov 20th 2008 9:44AM
The current leader in memory doubles the maximum capacitiy record every quarter to half year, and makes the capacity of the memory 4 levels below it go under $10. Example: 4GB cards dropped under $10 when the 64GB came out.
Now here is an interesting comparison:
$37.99 1 x 50GB Recordable Bluray Disk (BD-R) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817172040
$27.99 1 x 16GB Secure Digital Memory Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211245
$9.99 1 x 25GB BD-R http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817172041
$5.99 1 x 4 GB SD Memory Card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208090
Flash memory is rapidly expanding and dropping in price extremely quickly. Bluray disks dont seem to be doing the same. In a few quarters to a year (4x2=8, 8x2=16,16x2=32) we will have 32-64GB flash drives under $10, which can easily fit any movie.
Not preaching that this is the way to distribute. I'm just asking, was Bluray really the smart way to turn for "next gen" media?
Todd Bernhard @ Nov 20th 2008 8:28AM
Umm, Newegg has the WATERPROOF Corsair Voyager 64GB for $145.

It doesn't look NEARLY as good as this Kingston though.
Waterproof thumbdrives are also really helpful in case I end up staying here for a few days:

iEye @ Nov 20th 2008 11:36AM
Looks? it is a flash drive, not a wrist watch. Take the corsair.
Fanfoot @ Nov 20th 2008 12:22PM
The Corsair is HUGE. I know, I have one. I'll take one that doesn't block two USB slots.
JoeNES @ Nov 20th 2008 8:36AM
I know there is a product that lets your turn CF cards into an SSD, is there such thing for thumb drives? Or would the data rates be too slow?
EMoShunz @ Nov 20th 2008 8:42AM
tech question for those who are geekier than i:
if i can load kubuntu can be loaded from a flash drive, if i got this, could i install all my apps, and save all my files on this thing and carry it around like my own personal computer that just plugs into any other computer that can boot from usb?
Maurizio @ Nov 20th 2008 10:02AM
I think it wouldn't work too well because when you install an OS, you are installing all the drivers that work for that system's hardware configuration. If you boot from a different machine you would likely run into issues when the OS starts looking for the setup it had been installed into. It's like taking your hard drive and installing it in another machine and expecting you OS to work perfectly...I wont, you need to reinstall the OS so it reconfigures it to the new hardware.
IMO
mikerrussell @ Nov 20th 2008 10:07AM
Yes
mikerrussell @ Nov 20th 2008 10:07AM
@ Maurizio:
Linux is module based. It loads the appropriate drivers and kernel extensions at boot, so it should work fine 'on the fly' from any compurter, assuming that you are at least attempting to run it on an x86 machine.
EMoShunz @ Nov 20th 2008 10:11AM
can anyone second either mikerruussell or Maurizio. i seem to remember that the drivers load at boot, but linux/bsd though i desire her is a mysterious lover to me.
oinquer @ Nov 20th 2008 12:44PM
i use that with Puppy Linux...
It works in my Desktop and Laptop from USB disk (provided it can boot from USB)
There could be some issues with Linux distribution not having the drivers for all PC's but mostly would work OK.
EMoShunz @ Nov 20th 2008 3:43PM
ok, it's decided. pending wife approval, i will be getting one and installing pc-bsd 7.0.1 or kubuntu 8.10
BlackCoffeeNoSugar @ Nov 20th 2008 8:46AM
Why can't they just make it thinner, as thin as an SSD? That's what I want.
vdogg89 @ Nov 20th 2008 11:03AM
what the flash drive isn't thin enough for you?
Itchy Pajamas @ Nov 20th 2008 9:08AM
I like it! Pretty color. But I really prefer models with a retractable interface, or a swivel case. I'm concerned about losing the cap.
Aeon @ Nov 20th 2008 9:12AM
Awesome! I must get.
Georgiee @ Nov 20th 2008 9:43AM
I have one of these myself (The 32gb one that comes in an orange colour), and its a really nice piece of kit, not fastest memory stick ever, but fast enough for me to boot WoW off it and play :) and yes you will probably lose the cap though :(
JerkfacedFed @ Nov 20th 2008 9:47AM
Do you have any idea what you are talking about?? All compact flash drives are SS by nature. If you are asking how to hook a CF card up to SATA in a computer, ask about how to do that.
CF > SATA adapter

Read and write speeds are everything, Kingston also palm off that 16 gig datatraveller that writes at low speeds.
C´mon Kingston if you up the capacity ,up the speeds also.
Ken Laninga @ Nov 20th 2008 10:32AM
And I recall paying $800.00 for a FIVE Mb hard drive..........
Shakapooi @ Nov 20th 2008 10:45AM
Then you must be John McCain olde.....
JoeNES @ Nov 20th 2008 11:21AM
As long as we are remembering tech mistakes of the past, I remember telling someone that they will NEVER, EVER fill up a 1GB hard drive, don't bother paying whatever ungodly amount for 2GB. Sadly, that was not long ago, and I have many, many FILES over 1GB. Someday, someone will look at this 64GB drive and laugh.
bluebarca @ Nov 20th 2008 12:18PM
this makes me think that in the future when USB 3.0 arrives to USB flash drives (taking in mind that the capacities will also jump untill this happends maybe to 128GB or even more) then its more feasable, durable, compact, portable, universal(as in all people have USB but not all have BR players)....etc to buy a movie on a flash drive instead of a BR-DISC. this also will have many benifits since it can also carry normal data.
kylewbaker @ Nov 20th 2008 1:28PM
USB flash drives should not have fully detachable caps. Period.
Swinging covers, retractable keys, tethered caps -- it's all good. But why oh why have a separate cap for jerks like me to lose the second time we use it?
...looking at the pic again, the butt of that drive may actually jut out like that to fit the cap, like a pen cap that you put on bottom... might not be so bad after all.
Jash Sayani @ Nov 20th 2008 12:40PM
Wow! Technology is moving forward at a fast pace.... I remember picking up a 1 GB SanDisk USB drive from Circuit City for US$100.....
Colonel Kernel @ Nov 20th 2008 2:14PM
"... it even works with Windows, OS X, [Palm OS] and Linux!"
How would you even attach a USB key to a Palm OS device or ANY mobile device?
