AMD overclocks the snot out of Phenom II processors
No, you're not looking at some high-precision, multimeter-laden kegerator; the above is a picture from a recent AMD event in which things apparently got a little out of hand. The company started by talking up its upcoming Dragon platform (Phenom II X4, Radeon 4800 graphics, and 7-series chipset), took a few moments to discuss how its new 45nm chips will use 30-50 percent less power than their predecessors, and then threw all notions of sensibility out the window in an attempt to see just how fast the darned things could go. A Phenom II X4 managed 4GHz with air-cooling, 4.4GHz with a refrigerated setup, and finally a "stable" 5GHz on liquid nitrogen. That's mighty fast, but will the chips be quick enough to tackle Intel's mighty Core i7 when stripped of their fancy-pants cooling appendages? We'll see when they ship early next year.

The fastest processor on Earth is worthless without an internet connection to match.

Ummm... how fast does porn really need to be?
"TechRadar found that the new Nehalem Xeons at 2.8GHz scored favorably in SPECfp benchmark with a score of 160 as compared to a score of 90 for Intel's current Penryn-based Xeons running at 3.4GHz"
Would love to see some numbers other than megahurtz myths
This is hilarious - the picture looks like they are putting a car on a dynamometer, but it's just a computer!
Dude, I know! It looks like putting a tomato in the blender, but it's only a fruit, not a vegetable!
Did they allow you to use words like "snot" at journalism school?

You all have just been owned!!!

you mean 6 ghz?
YOU DARE QUESTION THE CREDIBILITY OF ENGADGET?!
YOU MUST DIE.
Well, I used to work for AMD (6 years total), and was a total AMD fan. Working there has it's ups and downs. When they are on top, they are making money and are good to their employees. When they aren't making money, there's always that thought of new layoffs.
Things have changed somewhat though. I'll still continue to use AMD in any desktop at home (currently have 4 of them), but I won't get a laptop with AMD inside. I can save a lot of money on an AMD platform, but the saving in a notebook isn't worth it. I have three laptops with core2duos (lenovo t61, xps m1330 and studio 15). If AMD could make some better mobile chips, they may see profitability again. The high end desktop chip doesn't really make that much money for these guys, though it does help with their image. The low volumes just don't help that much. The server space and mobile space, where the premiums are higher are where it's at. That's why I'm glad they are skipping out of the netbook race. That's a market just asking to lose money and already dieing out.
I've never had an AMD last for more than about 2.5 years and i don't clock them. My intel is now going strong after more that 3 years. AMD needs more dilithium crystals or maybe more cowbell.....................
If AMD would stop issuing BS press releases and concentrate on making better chips they may have a chance of staying out of Bankruptcy court.
In the latest BS, they talk about huge over clocking figures. Sounds great, All we have to do is buy a tank of liquid Nitrogen to achieve these wonderful levels. WHAT A JOKE !!
Another thing. Does anyone realize that in all their benchmark comparisons they almost always compare the data against only OLD AMD CHIPS, NOT AGAINST INTEL;S CURRENT PRODUCTS.
By the way, what happened to all their talk about 3 core Phenoms? Another PR vaunted chips that were a huge flop.
Fancy-pants is such an underrated term
We will all laugh at this in the future when 5 GHz will become a standard for processors.
I don't think that is an accurate prediction. that is like saying by 2010 we should see cars that rev to 15000 rpms.
People don't care about a 5ghz number, they care about speed. The new Nehalem clocked at 2.8ghz is almost twice as fast as the processor it is replacing which is clocked at 3.4.
F1 cars have already been shown to rev to 21,000+ rpm :)
Well Well Well! Rediculous tests. Maybe I am wrong because I am NOT a PC gamer, but that is the bulk of people interested in new chips. These geeks and their cult following of AMD they have been doing it for years. Very few AMD processsor's have outperformes intel, there are some, but few! Now all you fanboy's........All those years you took advantage of the low prices of AMD's processors, I think (and this is only opinion mind you) that maybe that has contributed to it's downfall. Less profitabiulity and profit margin on cheap chips that may in most circumstances only equal rival chipmakers offerings. I hate AMD. Because I hate Nerds and geeks and PC gamers and especially their snoody leet speak or whatever and all their secret words and codes on forums. I work in IT and I love technlogy, but all these new processors and video cards don't make my life any better or easier. I lvoe intel because they have never done me wrong, and I will not be a cheap ass and compromise brand loyalty for lower price, because like a loyal dog intel has never let me down. Whenever I owned an AMD machine.....it constantly shit in my house. So to sum it up doing this test makes AMD look bad. Intel is cruising along, not making news with rediculous overclocking for no good reasons and not even any games necessary for it and it has mainstream offerings that are kicking AMD's but. The i7 doesn't need a semi truck to cool it to play the latest game, and probably neither does AMD, but like a hot slutt it has to try to look it's best to impress! Oh yeah and one more thing.......................Console Gaming For Life!!!
you're wrong.
Sounds great. But where could I get some liquid nitrogen oxyde, also i will have to have permit and license to use it. Imagine going to the collection point to collect your nitrogen "hello, you again how many people you killed today" you will look like a murderer from CSI , well if you do not suffocate yourself while running full resolution on crisys. You will pay large sums ,but also ultimate proce your life.
We see alot of reactions from people that are negative towards AMD. Years ago, if it would not have been for AMD; Intel would not exist today. AMD was the one that gave Intel the technology. AMD does not have to spend millions of dollars on advertising; unlike Intel, to stay alive. AMD was the first to break 1Ghz; kicking Intel's butt. They will do it again. The big merger between AMD and Abu Dahbi/IBM will pull AMD way ahead Intel in the months ahead. We here at XXtreme Computers have only support AMD since our opening in 2002. We have broke Intel's record numerous times by overclocking AMD processors using TEC technology. If you like computer freezes, then go with the second hand Intel processors. Not one freeze from AMD. The new XXtreme Computers' "Goliath" platform will hit the market in Spring 2009 with the new Phenom II processors. Once again XXtreme Computers will prove that we build the world's fastest PC using AMD and Nvidia technology; along with the use of Super Talent SSDs. Intel has no chance of victory in 2009!!
AMD is honestly better than intel. Go AMD Go.
