Update: Added some screenshots of the most notable new features after the break. The Street View implementation seems solid though we miss the compass feature found on T-Mobile's G1. Also, the real-estate saved by moving the Google search field next to the URL field in Mobile Safari is a welcome and obvious change. As to auto-correction, well, that's personal taste. Tipster Vizcaya also noticed that Apple added a new option to rate an App when you delete it from your phone. You can also view multiple screenshots of applications available in the App Store.
Update 2: The other big update, Podcast downloads, works just as you'd hope and should further promote the spontaneous isolation we all crave. A few shots of that added after the break.

Holy shit Apple, STILL no copy/paste? Do you guys have your heads buried in the sand or you can't figure out how to do it? Because there's some hobbyist coder out there who's already done it for jailbreak devices - give the guy a few APPL shares and get the code if you have to. It's NOT complicated.

The update is pretty sweet. I did notice that instead of saying "no service" it says "searching..." lol.

The iPod/iPhone and Apple iTV are being accounted over a 2 yr span because of continual software updates.
Why is this not more common? Because usually the software REQUIRES more powerful hardware, which is why new iPods kept coming out year after year.
The Zune snuck in when the market was already saturated, and had a high end device that really hasn't seen any hardware changes since its inception. So of course, it can just do full software updates.
As for the $20 update from way back, a) accounting rules were posited as the reason and b) some speculate Apple just did that to test out its pay system for the "App Store" before launch. ;)

If you have ever seen the developer reporting manager for the App store, its obvious that app charges were just bootstrapped to the exact same system which charges for music and video. There was no need to run an extra $1M+ in arbitrary charges through the system to 'test it out'. But then again, when you look at some of the launch-day failures of a lot of Apple networked services such as MobileMe and iPhone activation, maybe they did.
The charge for the iPod Touch upgrade was just arbitrary revenue, kind of the like the extra 40%-140% people pay for Apple computers over other manufacturers.

My phone is unlocked for use on T-Mobile thru Pwnage and I updated no problem directly thru itunes. I don't use installer or cydia, so I can't speak to that (though I'd imagine they're gone with the update). Everything is working great otherwise!

This better be good. I don't know about you guys but there have been times where I seriously have contemplated switching my iPhone to something else. Steve said the iPhone wouldn't crash anymore but lately that's all that keeps happening to my phone. I open the New York times app, it crashes to home screen. I open Safari, after 3 minutes it goes to home screen. Pandora, same thing. You get the picture. (It sometimes takes a restart to even open ANY app.)
I'm sorry but with so many iPhone owners having so many software problems they need to realize we don't care so much about things like street view but rather just want some solid firmware for our $300 "smart"phones.
Even restarting your computer is good for it on occasion. The iPhone is basically a mini computer, it doesn't solve all the problems, but power cycling your iPhone before you go to bed or when you wake in the morning every day does wonders.
By "crashing" they really meant "bricking," which hasn't happened to me since 2.1. (But did frequently before then, because I was really putting my 3G through the ropes right after I got it, to test.)
Safari crashes often enough due to memory problems, and some programs are unstable, but... that's pretty much a "duh" on any platform. On some (like the PSP), you instead run into a "NOT ENOUGH MEMORY!!" flag, which is pretty much analogous. I want Safari to be continually improved, but you know what's not going to get my goat...? Crashing when I'm playing with multiple, complex pages.
You know whose browsers are going to crash? EVERYone's.

I wonder if this will lock my unlocked 1st gen iphone. When i updated to 2.1 it didnt reverse the lock just wiped out cydia. ill go ahead and update my 3g now. if this has happened to anyone let me know

Also walking directions are there too.
Street Views is there too. Enter an address and then click the person next to the address.

Those that have jailbroken 1G iPhone's don't update yet. I just tested it on mine, and now it's stuck in Restore mode as iTunes won't recognize it. Trying to figure out whether its because of the iTunes 8.0.2 update. Luckily I have a 2nd Mac that I haven't updated iTunes yet. So I am testing it out.
I am having the EXACT same problem, except I don't have a second computer to restore from. Thanks Apple? Seriously. You know, there are some people that use something other than a Mac, you know? Make your anthem of "It Just Works" apply to something other than some hardware that it SHOULD work on.

Well i think I figured it out. It won't recognize your phone if you are using a sim card other than AT&T, and luckily tonight I just happen to have an AT&T card on hand. So now its updating fine. Guess I won't be able to unlock it afterwards.
OK, let me start by saying that I have a completely legitimate 1st gen iPhone, not an iPwn...
So, I got iTunes to open on Two PCs and a Mac running Leopard (Up to Date), but when I plugged my iPhone into my Laptop that I've had it synced to (Since I purchased my 1st gen iPhone about 7 months ago), it DID say that there was an iPhone Software Update... So..... I pressed OK to Update the software, and it downloaded it... And, when it started the install, it got to a certain point at which it decided to put it into an Endless "Connect to iTunes Screen" loop.
This sucks. iTunes won't even recognize my iPhone now. It's not a jailbrake ipwn, either; totally legitimate.
ANYone have ANY ideas? Experiencing the same frustration because you can't even put your iPhone into a Restore Mode to do a RESTORE????
