iPhone firmware 2.2 gets QuickPwn and PwnageTool, of course
In case you haven't noticed the trend, when Apple releases a new iPhone / iPod touch firmware, it has a tendency to fall to the jailbreakers at mind-boggling breakneck speed. QuickPwn and PwnageTool have now both been updated to support 2.2, though there's a critical note in here from the iphone-dev team: if you have any interest in unlocking your iPhone 3G in the near future, only use PwnageTool, not the more painless QuickPwn. You've been warned![Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Does is still force you to have a pineapple as your bootup screen? I hate that pineapple...
David Rodgers @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:58PM
You can choose if you want a custom boot logo in QuikPwn
ZenStyleJunglist @ Nov 23rd 2008 9:19AM
It's not a pineapple, it's a PWNAPPLE!
randy @ Nov 23rd 2008 5:53PM
STILL? Dude that was optional even in 2.1! At least it was with QuickPwn. I have not jailbroken previous versions, so I don't know if it was optional pre-2.1.
yopladas @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:27PM
Lol.... Of course...
loocas @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:09AM
One could only wonder what's Apple's interest behind constantly unsuccessfully encapsulating, holeproofing and sealing their software?! Who's to win? Certainly not the consumers, that's for sure...
yopladas @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:15AM
Somehow I think the 1/2 iPhone users, who are oblivious teens, don't care about allot of the things QuickPwn offers, they don't care or they like the iPhone as it is... not everyone wants a unlocked iPhone and some people like the offered apps and accept Apple's ideas for the consumer.
Dan @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:28PM
Upgraded my 16GB 3G a few hours ago to 2.2 when this news came out. Quickpwn worked flawlessly, as usual. No, the pineapple boot screen is not required.
SirPasta117 @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:40PM
Fyi I also read about this on TUAW. They said to avoid using the QuickPwn due to whatever reason. i suggest you go over to TAUW and read up on it. NOTE: This is for 3G iPhones only!
Messymeese @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:16AM
Or you could go straight to the source... http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Avoiding the update is only if you care about a software unlock in the future...
SirPasta117 @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:55AM
No offense but the TUAW put it out in laymans terms. secondly why wouldnt you want a future update. Copy and paste has got to come around sometime.....right? hopefully? But the answer I cant find is wither or not you can Quickpwn, then just revert to the official firmware later down the line
griffin@griffincox.com @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:29PM
the pineapple has been optional for quite some time.
Jez @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:31PM
Yay!!!!
Taiso @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:31PM
Now if I could only jailbreak my iPod Touch 2nd Gen =(
Cliff @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:31PM
Nope! You dont have to have the pineapple, you can choose not to have it. I just updated my 3G 2.2 with Quickpwn, worked great. It was previously pwned back in the 1.something if that makes a difference.
eaglesboy @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:16AM
just upadated 2.1 to 2.2 using quickpwn for ipod touch 1G on XP
works like a charm :D
xnifex @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:33PM
I can't wait til they jailbreak the 2nd Gen iPod Touch
Messymeese @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:20AM
They're not going to for quite some time...
"We are not working on the iPod Touch 2G at the moment, we certainly have interest in this platform as we have mentioned before and we have done some preliminary analysis, but currently all eyes are still on the iPhone 3G, we hope to pick up work on the iPod Touch 2G sometime in the near future and when we have any updates relating to this we’ll blog about them here." - Dev Team

Pwnage tool only available for Mac?
David Rodgers @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:58PM
QuickPwn can be found here: http://www.zshare.net/download/51721230fe4b9459/, along with the firmware and such - at this site: http://www.quickpwn.com/2008/11/firmware-22-download-links.html
Gabe @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:16PM
@ David
I meant the full PwnageTool for PC...because apparently it's only for Mac. I don't care about QuickPwn, since it will alter my baseband with the new update.
David Rodgers @ Nov 22nd 2008 10:58PM
Worked like a charm, and the Cydia Backup Process found here is great for a quick reimage, if you will, of your current state of cydianess. AppStore is easy, and for the rest - http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50173&page=2 - this will work in 2.2, and make sure you follow the instructions and do some prep work prior to jailbreaking for a easy transition

Just a question. I jailbroke mine 2 weeks ago and found some nice tools I wanted. Now, Since my iPhone3G is jailbroken, Is it better not to do bank stuff on it???? I mean do I have to worry about Identy theft?
How much can I trust this stuff. Im asking cause I've just update to the latest software update and my device works better than it did when it was jailbroken. and i don't know If i should do this again...
David Rodgers @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:11PM
I hear you, so to make sure, try a packet capture application and set it to your device IP - make a static IP, or dynamically register it with your router, and monitor everything and see what the device is transmitting. If you get a bunch of encrypted packets, look into the destination addresses and see if you can figure out where traffic you can't inspect is going. Wireshark is a great app, and there is tons of material online about analyzing traffic and data using pcap and other sniffer methods. But, I have never seen anything that is suspect, and doubt there is anything going on to create a security threat to the end user.
Chris @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:01PM
And still no WinPwn for 2.1 :-(
Gabe @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:15PM
Omg now we can disable the auto-correct function! Now I can finally type 'lol' instead of obnoxiously being asked to type 'LOL' instead.
Madoxy @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:59PM
LOL
I'll upgrade soon enough :P
Samboini @ Nov 23rd 2008 6:23AM

quik1987 @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:30PM
Does 2.2 run smoother than 2.1? Not so laggy etc?
jdbeitz @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:04PM
i have noticed a HUGE improvement with the 2.2 compared to 2.1
Andrei @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:32PM
Too bad they haven't done anything for the iTouch 2g yet. I'm waiting since September :(
Shunnabunich @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:00AM
They tend to concentrate more on products from Apple, not Pasen.
Nomi @ Nov 22nd 2008 11:53PM
That sux...now I need to find a mac to preserve my baseband...
Marc @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:09AM
Does anybody have any idea how long it will take for a version for the iPod touch?
Jonathan Worrel @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:11AM
Ah, yes I've been waiting for this release.
*downloads*
Now I can bring my MacBook to the 14-hour Black Friday line and use 3G service through my iPhone.
neil @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:52AM
So those of us who don't have a Mac to use pwnagetool are just screwed if we want to keep the old baseband with the new 2.2 features???
SirPasta117 @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:14AM
For the moment....Yes
websyndicate @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:53AM
Works great for me. I preformed the hole process with out any problems. 2.1 jailbroken (not unlocked) to Upgrade through iTunes as normal then Quickpwn and BOOM.
Shunnabunich @ Nov 23rd 2008 2:12AM
Any 3G owners know yet if this new jailbreak will bork your cell radio? I had mine jailbroken for some time on 2.1, and it was incapable of finding a signal at all until I "went clean" again. I still prefer having the ability to make calls over having a wallpaper on my home screen, but I wouldn't mind having both.
David @ Nov 23rd 2008 4:52AM
So does this update work with the new Macbooks?
Rob @ Nov 23rd 2008 10:17AM
read this....blog.iphone-dev.org
it talks all about support for the new macs
MICHAELSD @ Nov 23rd 2008 3:49AM
That's pretty weird. I upgraded to 2.2 through iTunes yesterday and I just used QuickPwn to jailbreak it again. After trying to jailbreak it, my iPhone kept trying to reboot, then when it would turn on a white screen appears for less than a second and it tries to boot up again. I've been jailbreaking my iPhone since the first jailbreak was released and I've never had a problem. I guess I'll just have to restore through iTunes and try again...
DJFriar @ Nov 23rd 2008 12:13PM
Mine did the same thing. Just hold power and home until the device turns off, them re-run QuickPwn. It worked fine for me the second time.
g3rardo @ Nov 23rd 2008 1:28PM
Same problem. I tried twice and nothing. It keeps rebooting and itunes can't recognize it. I'll have to restore it again. The same problem happened when I tried last version 2.1. Any ideas?
love @ Nov 30th 2008 6:15PM
can't wait til they jailbreak the 2nd Gen iPod Touch
Dave @ Nov 23rd 2008 5:01AM
