iPod touch gets Street View, beats iPhone 3G at tennis

Some good news for iPod touch owners: one enterprising individual going by the nom de mod timmyj9 has figured out how to enable the Street View functionality in the media player's version 2.2 firmware -- albeit with some glitches. If your iPod touch is jailbroken, and if you enjoy this sort of illegitimate activity, feel free to hit the link below for some thrilling step-by-step directions. And if that wasn't exciting enough for you, we've just espied a video that pits the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G against both a first and a second generation iPod touch in a fight to the death (or more accurately, TouchSport Tennis). Admittedly, this is not the most scientific of benchmarks, but the clip (after the break) clearly shows the 532MHz second generation iPod touch rocking the 3D graphics faster than its 412MHz iPhone 3G counterpart. As expected, neither the original iPhone nor the first generation iPod fare nearly as well as their siblings.

Hey, yeah I was wondering why I couldn't get Streetview to work on my Touch.
That's rather stingy of Apple.
KarlW @ Nov 24th 2008 8:07AM
I assume the reason is that Street View counts as a new feature, which would require a paid upgrade. The rest of the update is just small fixes and tweaks. I'm not in the US, so I don't know if SabOx actually requires this. Apple seems to think it does.
I hope that Apple is lining up a paid upgrade, and that it would include more than just Street View (such as push notifications via WiFi). I'm hoping that they just thought the new features weren't worth making people pay for. The position's a bit weak, I admit.

Greg- I love your Avatar. I remember getting to Hitler at the end of Wolfenstein and how high my adrenaline was going. It was awesome watching his guts fall out after killing him. Such a great game.

I didn't know the 2nd gen iPod Touch had a faster CPU. Was this ever mentioned before?
OCEAN 'CLAK' 20th @ Nov 24th 2008 7:11AM
same processor 624mhz (www.apple.com see specifications), just that they are under clocked to a slower speed, probably a overheating issue.
Kizorblade @ Nov 24th 2008 7:41AM
Clak actually providing information? What?
KarlW @ Nov 24th 2008 8:15AM
It's probably a battery life issue. The iPhone has more radios to keep powered than the iPod touch. Even if you're on WiFi, you still need the 3G radio powered up in case you get a call. This could be remedied by the application requesting more resources, in which case the radio would switch to EDGE and the CPU would be overclocked.
A problem may arise if the battery gains aren't substantial enough. I'm not sure what the battery life savings are between 3G and EDGE whilst the connection isn't being used for data. Of course 3G uses more battery when you're browsing the web, but I don't know if the gains are as significant when you're not. It also means that games that require higher performance and higher speed connections wouldn't work when not connected to WiFi.

I haven't heard "fugly" in over 10 years! Apple-haters are jealous - I love my touch.
y3k.nik @ Nov 24th 2008 7:35AM
I liked my touch, till I found out Apple is going to be a royal pain in the a** and decide to limit features(Street View) I get compared to its god phone, until i dish out 10$ in the future sometime for it!

Your taunts and jibes are strangely endearing.. Like when a baby pukes all over someone else's shirt. I can't help but laugh and go 'awwwwwww'

that video was useless.
Johnnyg0 @ Nov 24th 2008 9:05AM
Not at all, it clearly shows how the older iphone is really slower than the newer Touch2, and how Apple developers will have to cope with slower processor, or just ignore them and make their products work only on newer/faster hardware. This will be interesting to follow.
sportex @ Nov 24th 2008 8:58AM
.... and slowly the iphone / ipod touch overclocking scene will emerge....
liquid cooling and stuff...

Before I try to modify my Touch, what are the "minor glitches" in the street view that you speak of? Worth it to mod anyway?
PyRo1509 @ Nov 24th 2008 12:05PM
Minor Glitches include:
Sticking it to apple
Nihility @ Nov 24th 2008 10:00AM
When did anyone mention the new gen phone and ipod have faster procs?
Which one does the old iphone have?
AnyKey @ Nov 24th 2008 12:08PM
I totally read that headline and got all excited, but all that faded when read the summary and found out it was a buggy release for jailbroken itouches.
Thanks for ruining my morning, Engadget.

As time goes by, I'm more and more thrilled that I got an iTouch. If you live in a WiFi-rich city, it's really a fantastic alternative to signing your life over to AT&T for an iPhone.

ha...we have this on The G1 already....why bother catching up Apple...
