Nokia's QWERTY slider E75 spotted in the wild again
In the "form factors Nokia hasn't fully explored, but probably should" bucket, side-sliding QWERTY candybars ranks pretty dang high on the list, so we're delighted to see that -- as far as we can tell, anyway -- Espoo's still hard at work banging out the details of its E75. We're told to expect WiFi (naturally), a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a 2.4-inch display, but more importantly, you've got a generous keyboard that should give the S740 a serious run for its money. We're a bit concerned about usability on a totally flush keyboard like this (E90 anyone?), but hey, maybe that's the reason it hasn't been announced yet, right?

AlDeezy @ Nov 24th 2008 10:46PM
I have to agree.
Yusuke @ Nov 24th 2008 11:02PM
I really like it. I had good luck with Nokia.
GiF @ Nov 25th 2008 12:07AM
That's why we buy MOTOROLA
derX @ Nov 25th 2008 1:28AM
Wow, I can't believe we're looking at the same device. I think the device looks perfectly fine. I think people have to remember that not everyone phone is supposed to be the n95 of its time: they have different devices that appeal to different markets. That phone looks great to me and that QWERTY looks like love.
....I just say they drop that damn E-series designation, because you know that's what they're going to use to justify jacking the price up. The phone looks great to me, but not E-series worthy.
auricom @ Dec 18th 2008 5:43AM
few-glay! early-2000s called, they want their phone back..
phones with QWERTY shouldn't have to have keypad upfront, unless it's aesthetically designed well (like the E90, although it's a pain to actually type on it). But with design this ugly, no wonder they're shy to show it off.
OCEAN 'CLAK' 20th @ Nov 24th 2008 9:51PM
i don't like it, to many buttons.
thedesolate1 @ Nov 24th 2008 9:53PM
Big screen nokia! BIG SCREEN.
plz?
I can do without the numeric keypad.
5 mpx cam with xenon and 3.5mm headphone jack
and we have a winner!
Fernando @ Nov 24th 2008 10:04PM
you mean a totally different phone?
thedesolate1 @ Nov 24th 2008 10:09PM
A fusion of these. You know put the tube's screen on the E75 minus the numeric keys plus the N82's camera. I mean they have the capability of making such a device.
daffy @ Nov 25th 2008 3:38AM
and, even better: High resolution!
VGA resolution would be very nice, although the Nokia E70's resolution of 416x352 (actually 352x416) makes things so much more enjoyable than the normal 320x200 resolution.
dcoaster @ Nov 24th 2008 9:58PM
I really don't understand how these phones get so much attention. 1) The Symbian OS is hardly on any Christmas (or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or etc.) list. 2) Nokia's design tactics are still from 5 years ago. 3) Nokia! Stick with the cheapo dumbphones!
sloanb@nashlinux.com @ Nov 24th 2008 10:12PM
Clearly you have never used S60. The power and flexibility of S60 over lets say.. umm iPhone are night and say. Yea they may not be the most fancy looking things but the things it can do will blow your other feature phones and smartphones out of the water. Sooo you wouldn't buy a car that you loved, was fast handled great, but didn't have the newest graphics on it.... some people.l
Coe @ Nov 24th 2008 10:12PM
Uhh "cheapo, dumbphones?" I don't think so, Slick. Try the E71 on for size. It's better built than any Blackberry out there, damned-near any WinMo (save for like the Q9 tanks), and a helluva lot more mechanically functional than any iPhone. I won't speak on other Nokias since I don't own any of them. The only problem I have with it is the size of the keyboard. Keep the generalizations to yourself next time.
Aaron @ Nov 25th 2008 3:42AM
"Nokia! Stick with the cheapo dumbphones!"
You do realize that Nokia makes more smartphones than any other manufacturer by quite some distance? Why would Nokia up something that they're obviously successful at?
eggothewaffle @ Nov 24th 2008 10:04PM
Suggestions to Nokia:
1) Stop. Just stop.
2) Take your N810 and shrink the screen down to 3.8 inches without reducing the resolution
3) Make a phone out of it
4) Retain the build quality and thinness
5) Bonus points if you use the N810 with WiMAX
6) Extra special bonus points if you throw some androiD's on it
I'm getting tired of being slowly led along to the culmination of what you should have done almost a year ago.
austin @ Nov 24th 2008 10:25PM
"throw some andrioDs on it."
i see what you did there.
Game_playa @ Nov 24th 2008 10:31PM
I also saw what he did, but so did everyone else, So I don't see how it makes you special if you just saw it
nxp3 @ Nov 25th 2008 12:04PM
If you're going to put a damn keyboard, leave the buttons off the face for screens. What's the point if a keyboard when you got such a damn small screen.
Sean @ Nov 24th 2008 10:10PM
Honestly, I like Nokia, but there designs lately are much to similar to each other.
Fernando @ Nov 24th 2008 10:24PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_language
consistent look and feel, yet being different, that's Nokia's design for you.
jay.viz @ Nov 24th 2008 10:27PM
THANK YOU NOKIA!
s60+qwerty slider+wifi+REGULAR FKN DIALPAD = WIN
How hard is it to get a regular phone with some decent features?
Game_playa @ Nov 24th 2008 10:31PM
How much does this cost?
jay.viz @ Nov 25th 2008 12:47AM
Here's a wild guess: it will probably fall between the N78 and the N82 which is $280 to $350.
PEZ @ Nov 25th 2008 6:07AM
CHRIST those keys are wide.
digitallysick @ Nov 24th 2008 10:39PM
the phone buttons kill it, why not make them smaller, or on screen , something?
Fernando @ Nov 25th 2008 12:00AM
somehow I don't think onscreen buttons were in the mind of who was asked to design a slide out qwerty.
BratPAQ @ Nov 25th 2008 5:31AM
@Fernando
wait till you see the on-screen keyboard, together with the slide-out keyboard and the key pad.
holycow @ Nov 24th 2008 10:49PM
Tube with that keyboard + S60v3 would've been awesome!
andy @ Nov 24th 2008 11:26PM
THis is apparently all nokia these days. They pump out a fantastic phone, but their keypads are simply jokes.. nokia n79, nokia n82, nokia n96, nokia n85. Nokia, how difficult is it for you to get past the design element and give us a keypad that feels good? How about little spaces between the e75 keys? how about solid buttons instead of strips of plastic on the n79, n85, n96? How about buttons that you can actually press on the n82?
Fernando @ Nov 25th 2008 12:01AM
well you're not really supposed to be using the outside keypad a lot, considering there's a qwerty underneath it.
boy I'm replying to a lot of comments today
Al @ Nov 25th 2008 3:06AM
I have no problem pressing buttons on my N82.
Franco @ Nov 25th 2008 2:27AM
Phone looks like it suits the market. It is slightly ugly, however. S60 is still quite capable. What other handset O/S allows you to seamlessly;
1) Copy and paste from emails,
2) View and edit attachments,
3) Check a website,
4) Update your calendar entries,
5) Add a note,
.. all multitasked, while *being on a call* with a customer!
iPhone's don't do this. Blackberry's don't do this. So far neither can replace my E90. Those that actually use their phone for more than email and browsing, know Nokia's are real business workhorses.
Phoenix @ Nov 25th 2008 11:31AM
WinMo, PROVIDED you have the hardware there to back it up.
The recent HTC devices (Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Touch HD, SEX1) being examples. I'll admit with inferior hardware it would fail there.
ILoveApple @ Nov 25th 2008 2:46AM
WTF, Chris? The E90's keyboard is without a doubt the best QWERTY keyboard on any phone I've ever used.
andi @ Nov 25th 2008 8:26AM
ever tried the e70?... or the 9210? both have better keyboards... the e90's second edition keyboard didn't smudge the screen, but became uncomfortable... and this one-s just the same... they want to keep the device slim so they trim the two most critical elements of a keyboard: button shape + key travel
daffy @ Nov 25th 2008 3:32AM
I beg to disagree: The Nokia E70 has the best keyboard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_E70) - much more usable than the E61(i) or the E71, and the phone is much more manageable than the E90.
So good, in fact is the E70 in my eyes, that I decided to have my broken E70 repaired instead of "upgrading" to a more recent phone.
The only downsides of the E70 that I am aware of are: very limited available memory (for running software) and a comparatively slow CPU. The rest is just very, very fine indeed.
keppo @ Nov 25th 2008 4:03AM
Not a very fresh photo, or what? The UI on the 5800 looks something like what we saw months ago.
Bad Beaver @ Nov 25th 2008 5:55AM
If the hardware is as slick as on the E51 we sure have a winner. Would like to know how thick it is.
