Nokia slips out 5 megapixel 6260 slide with AGPS, a first for S40 devices
Peeped in spy pics on these Interwebs since June, Nokia just went official with the 6260 slide. Unfortunately, "slide" in this case reveals a numeric keypad not a QWERTY. Otherwise, it's pretty much an iterative step beyond the 6220 classic. As such, we're looking at a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, WiFi, and HSDPA/HSUPA data to quickly share photos and video on Nokia's Ovi service with the promise of support for other photo and video sharing sites you might actually use. The 6260 slide also features Nokia Maps riding AGPS -- a first for a mass market, Series 40 device. Ships in early 2009 for about €299 before taxes and carrier subsidies, naturally.
Update: Detailed specs just released show a 2.4-inch, 320 x 480 pixel display on this 15.4-mm thick slider with quad-band GSM/EDGE and tri-band UMTS radios and microSD expansion. [Thanks, L]

looking great.......
AlDeezy @ Nov 25th 2008 3:49AM
Indeed, looks nice and slim!
Joylove @ Nov 25th 2008 4:34AM
Here's me hoping they do a 10mm thick candybar phone variant.
I've been waiting for a slim S40 GPS HSDPA phone from Nokia for 2 years now, and even resorted to a Sony Ericsson W910i which crashes all the time :-(
Unknown @ Nov 25th 2008 3:48AM
oh..... this like's ....
Me @ Nov 25th 2008 4:03AM
That looks fully slick
keppo @ Nov 25th 2008 4:17AM
Depending on how you want to label the iPhone (wink, wink), this might be the best dummyphone ever.
Poom @ Nov 25th 2008 4:25AM
Looks strikingly similar to 6210 and 6220. This is like a fuse of the two.
G @ Nov 25th 2008 4:25AM
What were they thinking? The only reasonable explanation i can think of for this phone not having Symbian is that it would mess with the sales of other Nokia phones. I don't think any dumbphone is worth €299.
Jay @ Nov 25th 2008 4:34AM
They do this all the time. If they didn't this would basically be a cheap n82 in a smaller package. We can't have that, can we?
L @ Nov 25th 2008 4:34AM
Um, there are several S60 phones with similar or even the same capabilities around - so, why should this be another S60 slider with AGPS, WiFi and a 5MPx camera? There's already the N95 (+variants) and N85 for that...
gad get @ Nov 25th 2008 4:36AM
Tell that to Steve Jobs.
L @ Nov 25th 2008 4:41AM
Um, why does Nokia not highlight the most important NEW thing about this phone (for Nokia, anyway)?
It uses a HVGA (320x480) screen with 2.4".

lol i own a Nokia 6260 :P
Johan S @ Nov 25th 2008 5:03AM
I don't understand the point of slider number pad. It's better to make the screen touchscreen and then have a slider keyboard (with all the letters as individual buttons .. the buttons won't be too small that it's unusable). I've seen a phone like that somewhere but I don't recall who makes it.
€299 = $385 ? If it were touchscreen I guess it could be worth it.
Rauha @ Nov 25th 2008 5:19AM
American websites should just stop quoting prices for phones.
The concept of unsubsidized & unlocked phones is clearly too hard to understand for average american.
JZ @ Nov 25th 2008 9:37AM
Because some people don´t want a touchthing, they want tactile feedback so they can type proper and not to forget call numbers without actually looking on the mobile. Further if this mobile is as reliable as all previous 62xx mobiles its worth every penny. I still see people walk around with a 6100 while the fancy phones from that time have broken down a long time ago. Not everybody is intersted in a new mobile asap it gets released, especially together with your carkit its something you rather avoid.
Félix @ Nov 25th 2008 7:05AM
@Rauha
Exactly.
Still I really don't get the point of stuffing so muhc AWESOME hardware into a phone and then Not symabian which rocks.
Btw the Res is extremely high for such a small screen :O
Jay @ Nov 25th 2008 10:12AM
I agree with Johan, all phones should be large and uncomfortable. Damn you nokia for making 5mp/gps/wifi/hsdpa phones that fit in my jeans!
ybd @ Nov 25th 2008 5:15AM
I've been using Nokia phones for 8 years and god damn, I hate Nokia's UI so much. This seems no different.
Keke @ Nov 25th 2008 5:33AM
Having hates UI for 8 years you have not yet got an idea to change your phone?
I do understand masochism, though.
ybd @ Nov 25th 2008 12:00PM
I do appreciate you writing the kind of comments that gets you an instant Highest Ranked, but Nokia had a pretty serious monopoly way back then - at least where I live.
iEye @ Nov 25th 2008 5:48AM
Looks like shite!
This looks like the prepaid Nokia 2680 slide you can get from wal-mart for $70... I expect much more from such an expensive handset.
Bill @ Nov 25th 2008 6:55AM
A nice little multi-media phone for those of us that don't want or need a "smart" OS. This will make a nice replacement for my Nokia 6500 Slide when I decide to replace it.
eyemlk @ Nov 25th 2008 6:29AM
Does this make it the first ever handset in the world to have a 480 x 320 x 16 million color screen
I dont believe that there are any blackberry or WM devices that can display 16 million colors.
Not bad for a dumb phone.
Pdexter @ Nov 25th 2008 7:08AM
Wow! Simple S40 phone with 5mpx + 480 x 320 x 16million colors screen(wasen't expecting that from mid end feature phone!!).
Some people here don't have brains if they can't understand the unlocked and locked concept. This is dirt cheap for 5mpx phone and will be free for via carriers.
Johan S @ Nov 25th 2008 8:11AM
I understand locked/unlocked.
The ipod touch which has an insane profit margin is better than this and costs less. The $85 extra should be more than enough to add a 5 MP camera and phone capability.
L @ Nov 25th 2008 8:13AM
You may understand locked/unlocked...but that whole phone/no phone thing is still puzzling you I see.
oZ @ Nov 25th 2008 9:29AM
I don't know if you noticed this, but THE IPOD TOUCH ISN'T A PHONE.
Pdexter @ Nov 25th 2008 9:35AM
You really don't make any sense. Like above ipod touch isn't a phone and how much did it cost for Apple to add 2mpx camera and GPS? And don't sound silly be linking me locked price, but the unlocked price of Iphone.
Just say that you don't like Nokia or don't understand or don't like the looks of it(the thing i don't like with this phone), but you just sound silly bashing the price because it's all win there.
This might very well be Nokia's next +10 million sold phone after 6500c/s, 6300, 5310 in two years. Thought they kind of have been needing one after 5310.
Pdexter @ Nov 25th 2008 9:37AM
*Nokia's next +10 million sold S40 phone
bachviet @ Nov 25th 2008 11:33AM
That's a nicely-spec S40 "dumb" phone. The screen resolution is better than everything Nokia currently has out there except the E90 and the upcoming 5800 XM (both are S60). This is a perfect non-smartphone.
L @ Nov 25th 2008 1:07PM
Another thing worth mentioning is that it has a WebKit-based browser - so, same resolution as the iPhone, same rendering core...should work nicely with all those iPhone-optimized pages.
Scott @ Nov 25th 2008 6:51PM
Awsome! Something decent and not the slow, harder to use S60. S40 rules and IMO must faster and easier to use than S60. All I want is the candybar version! My 6233 is dying...
Scout650 @ Nov 25th 2008 6:42PM
Definitely nicer than the 6220. However, no Xenon flash this time. This kinda annoys me how when a new feature/form factor gets added, something has to be sacrificed. Can't have everything, I guess...
Bill @ Nov 25th 2008 9:47PM
As long as Nokia uses dual high-powered photo LED's on this phone it will probably be comparable to most phone-based Xenon flash solutions.
I was looking at some comparison shoots recently taken with the N95 (dual LED) N82 (Xenon) and N85 (dual photo LED). And, I was amazed to see that the N85 low-light shoots, taken with the phone's dual high-powered photo LEDs, were pretty damned close in quality to the N82 low-lights shoots taken with it's Xenon flash. Therefore, I wouldn't let the lack of Xenon flash put me off this phone.
However, there's one area where Xenon is clearly superior: Fast action shoots. A Xenon flash can 'freeze' the motion because it's so quick. Until they make a photo LED that can do this Xenon will always have the advantage in this area.
GAWEIN @ Nov 25th 2008 10:32PM
When will NOKIA again make a phone have the material and style like 7390 that doesn't make finger print (at most of the surface) and have a nice look? I always waiting for "L'Amour Renaissance" that seems never coming......
thedesolate1 @ Nov 25th 2008 11:33PM
Its a poor man's n95. Am I right? We need other manufacturers to put more pressure on Nokia. The only reason Nokia hasn't released anything compelling that can top the N95 is because they know that other manufacturers are too focused on stealing the iPhone's market share to make handsets that can compete the features/price that Nokia is offering. Sure Samsung and SE are releasing spec wise better handsets but not at competitive pricing. Its hard to believe that the N95 has been out for so long and all they seem to be producing is (aside from the E series) reiterations of the N95 spec. Plus or minus some details here or there and diff chipsets. Kind of disappointing. They are getting arrogant witch is what causes many companies to fail. (I'm looking at you PS3 and at you Vista). /end rant
Now about this phone I think it is a smart move for a dumb phone that would fit well in the "mainstream" U.S market they have been alienating if a carrier picks it up.
Bill @ Nov 26th 2008 10:14PM
No, it's not a "poor man's N95" at all. It wouldn't even be in the same category as this new Nokia doesn't run a multi-tasking OS (i.e. it's not a smart phone). Less expensive alternatives to the N95 would be the N79 and N85 that were recently released. Even the 5800 Xpress might be considered more of a N95 alternative, by some, than the 6260 Slide would be.
About Nokia rehashing the N95, I don't really see them doing that. All the N Series phones share certain features and similarities. However, if you're referring to Nokia using the same designs for their form factors (i.e. casing), then, yeah, it could be said they're rehashing. However, they are probably sticking to what works and sells well for them. Big companies, like Nokia, tend to be conservative that way.
Personally, I think that SE lost the plot over the last 2 years with their form factor designs. I don't like that whole ultra-slim thing they're doing at all. The phones feel flimsy because of it. By the way, I used to own a SE W810i. So, it's not like I dislike SE at all.
Samsung phones I haven't had an opportunity to spend any time with. So, I won't comment about them.
Joylove @ Jan 27th 2009 6:24PM
Come on Nokia! Tick Tock!! It's 2009, and I have a wedge of cash with Espoo written aaaaaall over it!
