PS3 firmware v2.53 bringing full screen Flash support
It seems like just yesterday (or last month, to be more exact) that we were enjoying the spoils of firmware 2.50, and now, Sony's giving us a little pre-Thanksgiving treat with version 2.53. Slated to hit the wires sometime on November 26th, the latest PlayStation 3 update will bring along full-screen Flash support (huzzah!) among other minor tweaks. Check the full changelog in the read link, and get ready to get your download on tomorrow.

Does this mean full-screen Hulu vids finally? Sweet.

Hey Rock99rock:
You got anything for Netflix Watch-Instantly on the PS3?
absinthe party @ Nov 25th 2008 3:28PM
Ah, sweet... but it seems to me that having full Flash support would be a lot better than having to cough up some money after a 14-day trial, amirite?

I tried to do Hulu videos on 2.52 & for some reason I can't watch anything that you need to log in to view. I can't get to the log-in screen.
Anyone have any luck? All the good stuff you need to be logged in to verify your age.

Come on mkv support. You know you can do it...
somebody7 @ Nov 25th 2008 3:11PM
Thats all I want for Christmas
rock99rock @ Nov 25th 2008 3:12PM
Ive heard tversity can get it done, but only with stereo audio. I never could get it to work personally.
Gnormie @ Nov 25th 2008 3:12PM
Have you tried TVersity? I've been successfully streaming .MKV video to my PS3 for quite some time now.
holycow @ Nov 25th 2008 3:31PM
Playing the video using a hard drive, USB key or Memory card is way better than streaming it. Seems more stable. I absolutely hate it when for some reason it just times out in the middle. So yea, I want .mkv support as well. Please Sony make it happen!
Elora HRanma @ Nov 25th 2008 3:34PM
Matroska AND Ogg would do it for me. Although seeing how Sony considers that ripping my original CDs to my drive is breaking the law, they might not even think about this.
Sy @ Nov 25th 2008 3:35PM
You can stream mkv files but only in stereo.
Gnormie @ Nov 25th 2008 4:02PM
@ Holycow
True, but for me being able to play 720p MKV files faultlessly now, is better then waiting for Sony to support it.
VenQWish @ Nov 25th 2008 4:37PM
What you can use as a bypass is GOTSent: http://sentry23.googlepages.com/home
It'll change the container from mkv to mp4, it doesn't take long as it doesn't re-encode anything.
Joseph @ Nov 25th 2008 5:15PM
Use mkv2vob
Brunz @ Nov 25th 2008 6:11PM
dont use mkv2vob... vob containers suck for mp4 files....
use tsmuxer and you can have 1080p and ac3 audio...
Midda @ Nov 25th 2008 7:59PM
Clearly you've never used mkv2vob. It converts not only to VOB, but MP4, MPEG2 and M2TS.
MasterCKO @ Nov 25th 2008 3:10PM
Keep it coming, Sony!
Homeboy @ Nov 25th 2008 4:04PM
That's what Engadget like as they refused to cover the major Xbox 360 launch, while waking up half of the people in the building as soon as Sony or Apple release an update or even a fix.
Dave Chappelle @ Nov 25th 2008 8:27PM
Its only because sony kicks ass dude. Microsoft makes Windows, Xbox and well thats about it. How can you expect it to get more attention than the corporate BEAST known as Sony which makes TV's, computer monitors, OLED's, PLAYSTATION!!, Walkmans, Cell Phones, Memory sticks, Laptops, and has somehow managed to keep Metal Gear Solid exclusive?
heck just a while back Sony made a standalone Ebook reader AND ITS EASILY THE BEST ONE!!
oh ye, and haven't you noticed the general tech public do not really favour Microsoft a great deal they just keep ripping us off.
Craig McRae @ Nov 25th 2008 3:11PM
I downloaded 2.52 on Monday, and I STILL since 2.50 haven't been able to view flash. Anone else? The browser crashes every time and i have to power down with the switch on the back. I emailed support and got no response. I really hope 2.53 fixes this.
centinall @ Nov 25th 2008 4:16PM
One thing I noticed about hulu on the ps3 is that it takes a good 2 minutes before the video starts playing. It's not my internet connection bc videos start right up on my desktop.
So, yeah, hopefully they've fixed some of the flash issues. Surprised they just didn't push Flash Player 10 out, since the day Flash 9 came out on PS3, Flash 10 came out on the PC.
mos @ Nov 25th 2008 3:13PM
I am a PS3 user and I did not know the current version of PS3 has partial Flash support.
Tomheivers @ Nov 25th 2008 3:15PM
It's the changelog for 2.52
The new FW is 2.53 :)
So the source is kinda invalid.
NHAnimator @ Nov 25th 2008 3:30PM
Figures. Engadget finally writes an entire paragraph about the PS3 without a single snide remark, then refs a source which is itself inaccurate.
Lloytron @ Nov 25th 2008 3:44PM
The link is valid - the changelog includes an entry for 2.53 near the bottom of the list.
Funke, Tobias Dr. @ Nov 25th 2008 3:18PM
Thank god for their timing; TV Land just abruptly replaced Star Trek with infomercials. I was about to go into big screen Star Trek withdrawal.
Leo161 @ Nov 25th 2008 3:29PM
I Use Orb, it feels much more reliable than TVersity, and it can stream your webcam to your TV from your computer, plus you can also access your media through any browser
TagsxA @ Nov 25th 2008 3:29PM
Wow, yet another update I can sit and watch for 30 minutes! Thank god I only use it for Blu-Ray watching and Little Big Planet playing. Anything more and I'd have to turn this thing on more than a couple times a week...
Bobby Ore @ Nov 25th 2008 3:32PM
You can always get Torrent Support on your PS3 with Torrent Relay
Glen @ Nov 25th 2008 3:40PM
All of this was in 2.52, the only known new thing is full screen flash
Elora HRanma @ Nov 25th 2008 3:46PM
And will a PS3 with this update be able to play Fullscreen HD Youtube videos on the PS3? The implementation of flash was not that great in previous firmware versions.
720p in FS puts almost too much pressure on my Linux AMD64 Flash 10, in a Q6600 processor.
Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&fmt=22 (which apparently is: 1280 x 720, 30fps, 2000kbps video AVC, 232kbps audio AAC, 44.1khz stereo)
Poom @ Nov 25th 2008 4:33PM
It says full screen flash support and the PS3 has had flash 9 for a while, why wouldn't fullscreen youtube work? -_-"
Poom @ Nov 25th 2008 4:38PM
Whoops my bad, we only got flash 9 since 2.52. I didn't know that.
Mobius_1 @ Nov 25th 2008 4:10PM
Sony, please make the PS3 smaller, and then stick a phone in it :P
BigD145 @ Nov 25th 2008 4:18PM
Flash 9? Get with the program, Sony. You could have released this 2 years ago.

Dustin Hess @ Nov 25th 2008 5:40PM
each of the 2 people that visit my website on their ps3 will appreciate the full screen top gear vids! I do have ever episode up there, but I can't bring myself to watch them on my website on the ps3 when I can't make it full screen, convenient as all hell, but pointless.

If Sony really wanted to give a Thanksgiving treat, they should have given a price cut on the PS3.
InfinityPlusOne @ Nov 26th 2008 9:43AM
Right, but to their loyal customers who have already bought the system, that wouldn't be much of a treat at all. Why don't you just hold off buying the system until they drop the price to free-ninety nine? Me? I'll be enjoying my games and added system features.
Levi @ Nov 25th 2008 6:02PM

KD in KC @ Nov 25th 2008 8:26PM
Sweet! Oh wait, my PS3 is still in for service after playing say...30 hours of assassins' creed and 20 blu-ray movies....
I admit I only usually know about the updates when I turn on the unit to watch a movie, which I realize I should do more often since I usually have to wait 10 minutes for everything to happen with the updates.
But why is PS3 coming out with so many? It seems as though there are two updates each month. (Am I exaggerating?)
Since I've had all the consoles, I've had two for the Wii, I think 4 or maybe 5 for the 360 (over 3 years time), and at least that many for the PS3 in less than a year.
Did Sony rush this that quick to market without burning in this OS fully?
I play on my 360 more than any others, (although the wife plays on the Wii a ton) and I admit I got my PS3 for free, but I'm still not conviced of the value of this system yet.
SimbaDogg @ Nov 25th 2008 9:14PM
are you kidding? that video is straining your q6600? thats really sad because my lowly (and old) OC e6300 w/ a crapphy sapphire 2600 running it just fine.
also did i mention i'm running folding@home @ max cpu % settings, and i'm watching tropic thunder right now (in HD) on my comp. somethings simply not right w/ your setup, because i'm watching this just fine, no choppiness and perfectly smooth.
