German labs set new mark for energy efficient white OLEDs
BASF and OSRAM ticked the OLED progress meter up one recently, with news out of Germany about new diodes that are both efficient (60 lumens per watt) and reproduce color accurately enough to meet international Energy Star standards. The most power sipping organic light-emitting diodes ever created they aren't, but the ability to keep their color under varying levels of intensity leads to the next step, producing stable deep-blue colored emitters for increased efficiency (100 lumens per watt or more) so they can start illuminating surfaces near you. Isn't it lucky, we know some folks in South Korea BASF might want to have a chat with.[Via OLED-Info]

Yay, OLED HD TVs coming right up!
PH0ENIX @ Nov 26th 2008 1:12AM
I wouldn't hold my breath. It's going to be a loooooong time before OLED will come out, let along start competing with LCD/Plasma TVs in terms of pricing/screen size.

well considering the backing and the fact that it has a difference that is clear to the general non tech savvy this is going to be coming up much faster than you think. It almost feels like there is new news on OLED's every day on this site lately its great, one of the big reasons why people would not buy bigger than 50-60inch tv's was because of the sheer weight of the thing, with an OLED weight is cut down considerably and obviously size, = cheaper costs in production = cheaper prices = more happy customers.
"It's going to be a loooooong time before OLED will come out"
sorry dude but this has already happened.
"let along start competing with LCD/Plasma TVs in terms of pricing/screen size."
Do you act like this for every tech related product, thank god producers do not have the same thought process as you we would have been stuck in the dark ages.?
PH0ENIX @ Nov 26th 2008 12:52PM
Nope, just sick of vaporware. Call me jaded, LOL.
Ogo @ Nov 26th 2008 4:43PM
What???? A Sony 11" AMOLED HDTV for $2500 doesn't suit your needs!!! Preposterous!!!

Good vherk Gunter.

I was expecting the headline to read: Scientists design more efficient bong.
alphachapbos @ Nov 26th 2008 1:27AM
what is a bong?
tonyshootspeople @ Nov 26th 2008 2:29AM
exactly what i was thinking. from the looks of that though, we're dealing with a steamroller here - and theres nothing much more efficient than that. ^.^
Erich Strasser @ Nov 26th 2008 1:19AM
The experts at BASF are dealing with the material side of the OLEDs and, within the framework of the OPAL project, are developing the optimum component structures in partnership with Philips and Osram. BASF reached an important milestone in OLED research a few years ago. White light from OLEDs can best be obtained by combining red, green and blue light.

Damn, that's a long dildo, wonder where it's going......

looks like a giant thermometer to me.
I hope it's the sort that works under your tongue

Ok, I think most of us immediately saw this guy holding a bong, but how do you explain why Josh and ED were thinking about dildos and rectal thermometers?

Uh, childhood traumata?

Did you have childhood trauma that messed up your spelling capabilities?

universal display achieved 102lumens/watt few months ago, this isn't big news...
