Quicktime 7.5.7 update cleans up HDCP Macbook issues, but only on SD vids

Releasing it's stranglehold on iTunes Fairplay DRM'ed content just a bit, Apple has issued a Quicktime 7.5.7 update, that allows standard definition videos to play on external displays without HDCP support. High definition content still toils under HDCP and DisplayPort content Protection (DPCP), leaving oldschool displays at least functional, but sadly low res. Any new MacBook / MacBook Pro owners out there making the non-HD supported Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA journey who can check in and let us know if it's working now? Grab the latest version with your usual Software Update function or from the apple Support Download Website.

Would this same issues arise from Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI/HDMI adapters or is it only VGA?

Blame Hollywood for insisting on this HDCP crap in the first place. I, for one, will never be buying any Blu-Ray stuff or HD videos off iTunes Store until they get rid of this mess.

And before anyone else says it: DRM is a bag of hurt.

Ah, the Quicktime updates. Sometimes, they "clean up" other things too. Like a perfectly working VLC media player. Thank god there's Pacifist.

Guys,
Please don't install this yet. Mine automatically update itself. Just for you know. My new alu' MacBook now has this symptom.
- cannot shutdown because it's automatically restart when I try to shutdown
- no longer able to sleep when the lid is closed or using manual sleep
- automatically start when lid was open from a shutdown

This is what I notice since my last update 6 hours back.

I'm really frustrated right now, I'm looking for a solution. Please reply if you know one.
And I'm pretty sure this update cause it since I was using it at the time. After restart, i tried shutting it down. And failed. Everytime.

Now I need to shut down by holding power. This sucks.

Remove (or copy) this from files from the folder.
HDDname /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
HDDname /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist

New files will be created.
And scan your drive with Disk Utility for permisisions issues.

Okay. So that means the new laptops are now on par with the old ones. SD content comes out without HDCP, but HD content will not. Since the studios refuse to allow HD ("high value") content out without HDCP, that means older laptops won't be able to show HD content on video out at all, while the new ones will do it if you have HDCP.

It was stupid (or maybe just an error) for Apple to require HDCP to output SD video from the new laptops. That made the new laptops less capable than the old ones, which is a recipe for devaluing them.

I just tested two videos that were previously not working on a VGA display. One is an 853x480 video (SD) and the other is a 1280x720 HD TV show. Both work now where previously I got the error message.

Apple doesn't sell HD movies for computers. What content are you talking about? It sure looks to me like HD TV shows are working fine now.

Did you buy these shows from the iTunes store? This fix applies only to the iTunes bought shows. Other videos were never affected by HDCP.

It's the movie studios who demand HDCP for HD content. TV shows are not covered by this.
