Dreamcast PC features Blu-ray, nostalgia for the late 1990s

Following hot on the heals of the Sega Saturn case mod we saw last month, the gang from Akiba PC in Japan are back with the Dreamcast PC. This machine sports a Sony NEC Blu-ray drive, an AMD mini-ITX mainboard with 780G Chipset and ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics, HDMI output, 4GB RAM and 160GB storage. We thought that the four USB ports (previously the console's controller ports) were a particularly nice touch. Manufactured for ¥100,000 (roughly $1,045), the machine is unlikely to go on sale any time in the near future, but if you're so inclined feel free to take the long weekend and jet over for a look yourself. Be sure to tell 'em Engadget sent you. And mourn for Shenmue.

Why are these stupid case mods news worthy? Does anyone here actually find them interesting?
err....yes actually.
More interesting than inane comments bitching about them, yes indeed.
That looks absolutely fantastic even in its own right. Unlike your words. My retinas hate you.
Loonie, I have trouble SEEING what's upsetting you! har har har!
Is it time to eat yet?
Whaat thee heeel ??/? what the heck they made from that dreamcast
I almost stop breathing !1
this is so unbeliveable so amazing , so perfect soo i cant get it ..
this is so best planned work what i ve seen in the world !!!
I WANT IT !!! WANT IIIT !!!
Shenmue is the best game EVARRRRRR
and the Dreamcast is the best console EVARRRRRR
Have you seen any sailors?
Would you like to play a game of lucky hit?
I'd like to ask you about that day.
AAAH SHENMUEEE I LOVED IT first second played like japanese and english as well ...both
Your comment reminded me how sad I am Shenmue 3 is not getting released. (BTW, there's a website or something out there somewhere where people are organizing to send capsule toys to Sega in protest, much like Jericho's canceled season. However, if this succeeds like Jericho, then the game will just be released, only to be canceled halfway before being finished.)
Will it let me play Dreamcast ISOs burnt to DVDs?
Why would you ever think anyone on here would know the answer to that?
get a dreamcast emulator and youre on..... i used to play in one a few time ago and was very good...
Awesome case mod, want one.
IMHO, it's newsworthy, especially considering the skills needed to pack so much power in such a small space. A lot of those mods are often rather useless, but this look like a decent HTPC replacement.
HP, throw in a tv tuner card and build this! And throw some money at Sega to finish Shenmue. I don't ask for much.
This was done 5 years ago, albeit nowhere near as clean or powerful:

I love the Dreamcast, so, yes this IS very, VERY cool, nonethless!
It's a pretty neat case mod, but I never have been and never will be nostalgic for the late 1990's.
omg yay!!
i miss sonic.. is that weird?
No. And yes.
Ah the magic of mini itx,
"hey thats a nice hat youve got there"
"Yup"
"Now it has a full 64bit pc inside it"
"Cor!"
>heels
Mac Mini Killer
Now that's another case mod story
9/9/99. Never forget.
Step 1: Pull guts out of old toy/geek appeal item.
Step 2: Cram a PC into it.
Step 3: Engadget fame
Does no one else get sick of this lame trend?
No.
You're just jealous, Corpsey.
This is a Dreamcast. It automatically wins. :)
Step 1: Find an interesting case mod story.
Step 2: Post a lame troll comment.
Step 3: Engadget infamy.
Does no one else get sick of THIS lame trend?
There is actually alot of skill involved in many of these mods. I have a PS3 atm which I am intending to sell but I thought of buying a not working PS3 to use as a case for a project such as this. Would be a very nice HTPC case.
This is the first case-mod I'v liked in a while. gj to whoever did that
that's hot
Toss the drive and halve the cost?
One more dreamcast dies....
We only have a limited number of DC's for our enjoyment
Other than that, looks great.
Shenmue was my favorite Dreamcast game. I went back and played about a year ago. I demand a remake.
but can it play vista?
That's how you know a game system is truely memorable. I remember working at Gamestop (then Funcoland) when that was released, and being so excited to get home and play my dreamcast with Sonic Adventures 1 (which was fun, as I remember it).
Also, VGA adapter made this system even more enjoyable. I still have mine (with adapter) that I play from time to time. :)
Isn't that a Windows DVD in there...
I thought this thing could play Blu-Ray's.
It would be nice if we had an example....
Im sending my love to the people over at http://linuxdc.sourceforge.net/
Native linux for the dreamcast. Now thats newsworthy. hinthint*
16 chapters, 16 fucking games, Yu! Where are they? I wouldn't even touch it had I known how incomplete it was about to be. Still, one of the best gaming experiences ever;]
Its true, had i known the fact this series would stop at such a cliffhanger then i'd have never gotten it. Sega, if you wont make it yourself because your too stupid to figure out how to make money from it licence it out too someone who can, I NEED CLOSURE!!!
OMG no way dude that is just WAY too cool.

...if I had one, I'd install an emulator and play Powerstone until my eyes fell out of my head...that or I could just bust out my old DCast...and save $1,100.
This is an awesome case mod. Wish I still had my old case (replaced it with some color 3rd party replacement) to tinker with. 9/9/99 Never Forget!!
the fact that they got the disc drive to work exactly with how it originally was... is pretty impressive imo.
I wouldn't put Windows on that ;)
Hey i did this like 5 years ago when the 800 mini-itx board came out. its a shame the plastics had to be cut in this case mod - mine had hdd, psu, mmotherboard dvd drive and pci card installed without modding the case. I also hacked a dreamcast keyboard and mouse so it looked ayuthentic... hmmm pictures up on youtube soon! will comment again when there up
