Archos 7 acquired in the wild, critiqued in French
Mmm, the Archos 7. Seven full inches of touchscreen loveliness, just waiting to be caressed as you slide over your favorite artists one by one. Poor attempts at seduction aside, this magnificent piece of PMP has been spotted in the wild over at ArchosLounge, and the lucky soul who managed to acquire it even took the time to spill his impressions... in French. From what we could gather via the wonders of Google Translator, the Archos 7 wasn't actually a surefire upgrade for those with the 5, particularly not at the listed price. Still, the unit brought a lot of smiles to the face of the owner, and we're pretty sure it'll do the same for you. Click the read link for a few more looks.

A friend at school has an archos. It was half the price of my 80gb iPod Classic, and it pretty much rivals it very nicely. My classic beats it in video battery life, size (capacity), size (size), and it has iPod games, but honestly, iPod games are fun but not THAT important (Thats what the PSP and DS are for), video isn't as good on a smaller screen (I watch anime in japanese with subtitles...), and I honestly don't need my 35gb naruto and bleach collection on there.
Other than that, archoses are pretty nice.
amu @ Nov 28th 2008 3:43AM
Naruto and Bleach? Why don't you get some real anime like Shugo Chara.
Patriks7 @ Nov 28th 2008 3:47AM
Anime porn with subtitles?! You need to read the "aaaaaaaaaah"?
Kidding.
To get on topic, I have to agree, they are really nice video players. I played with a couple of them at a store and they are pretty responsive, but I think the size is unpractical because you need to have it in a bag. What also sucks about them, is that if you want some of the extras, you have to pay :\
Otherwise they kick any iPods ass in video playing from what I saw..

I am working on it, I am currently expanding my manga viewing. I don't watch much anime...

Wow, I would love to get my hands on one of these gadgets. What a huge screen and the touch screen part, umm amazing. Where Can I get one.
Jimmy Jones @ Nov 28th 2008 3:51AM
If you're interest by the way, you can get 20% off till 12/2/2008. You can get the 160GB Archos 7 for about $359 w/coupon which is better compared to paying $449 or the 320GB for $431 w/coupon
Kris @ Nov 28th 2008 4:32AM
He wasn't interested. Just shameless plugging his site ;)
SITEiNK @ Nov 28th 2008 6:24AM

Not even IEye can deny this piece of PMP goodness.
)ROFL( @ Nov 28th 2008 3:16AM
Daaamn, that thing looks huge.
pradeep @ Nov 28th 2008 3:19AM
Huge enough to house a GPS receiver...but they didn't include one.
Looks like we need to pay up for extra software like Skype...
Haikibutsu @ Nov 28th 2008 3:33AM
That's what she said!
Jimmy Jones @ Nov 28th 2008 3:54AM
I'd have to agree w/your comment. This is precisely the reason I stayed w/d the 5. Just looking at the size of that thing, anyone can tell it won't fit in a jeans pocket....
bela @ Nov 28th 2008 4:16AM
The article is not exactly correct.
Lucky soul? The Archos 7 was available for immediate delivery in their US online store for at least a month now.
rita hainsworth @ Nov 28th 2008 5:54AM
Seven inches fits pretty well in most jeans....
Ryback @ Nov 28th 2008 6:23AM
Then 7 inches must be the sweet spot, 'cause my 8 inches don't!
Jimmy Jones @ Nov 28th 2008 7:11AM
lol. If u happen to have 'most' jeans, then i guess 7 inch fits... :-)
Pallin @ Nov 28th 2008 12:35PM
[...] to spill his impressions... in French. What did you expect, it's a French website. Hey, not everybody is an unilingual American. You guys can't help thinking the whole world revolves around you. BTW, for a great, great part of its vocabulary, English relies on latin due the influence of the French on the British Isles from where a bunch of narrow-thinking country bumpkins escaped someday to land in Pleymouth and from who you descend from.

Wow, that's not an arrogant or presumptuous comment at all. You are really a cock, you know that?
For starters, they didn't say there was anything *wrong* with it being in French; they just said that is *is* in French and they cannot read it. If it was in Russian and you couldn't read it, would that make you stupid? No, it would simply mean that you don't speak Russian. That's not a crime and it doesn't make you any less intelligent than anyone else. The article didn't say a frikking thing about French being a stupid language or anything even remotely close to that, so why did you imply that they did?
Secondly, why attack people from the United States specifically? I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but France and the US are -- surprise -- on two entirely different continents. We don't exactly need to know French for everyday life, so most people don't. We do, however, use things like *Spanish*, considering how much closer Mexico is, and a good portion of the population speaks at least some. If we were in a position like Europe and surrounded by so many countries, we probably would be multi-lingual. But as it, it's very unlikely that we'll need more than the languages of the continent where we reside (ask yourself: do you speak any native *African* languages? No? I thought not).
Third, you are truly ignorant if you think that all "Americans" speak English. "America" refers to any area in both North and South America, you git, and that includes Portugese, Spanish, all the and hundreds of Native American languages on *both* continents. Kindly read up a bit on geography before accusing other people of being stupid.
(Oh, and it's Plymouth, not "Pleymouth"; the "narrow-thinking country bumpkins" you refer to are a good deal more intelligent than yourself, by the looks of your post, and the US is far open-minded than places like France on issues like religion ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islam_in_France#The_hijab_issue ); and Frech is an overrated, clumsly language that falls apart when examined closely and breaks nearly all of its language rules, even moreso than English. Not to mention the fact that both English and French were the result of invasions by Germanic tribes and that neither was a direct influence on the other.)
Wwhat @ Nov 28th 2008 1:05PM
Ha, when he takes it out of the box it seems to be as solid as a same-sized plate of steel, and large enough to stop several bullets, if you are mowing in new orleans for instance.
Also I see a lot of waits, all in all I'd say this is not something that excites me a lot, I'd go for the earlier version if I wanted portable.
David @ Nov 28th 2008 5:07PM
You do realize that the USA is next to Canada right? A country with two official languages, one of which is French?
Wwhat @ Nov 28th 2008 6:07PM
Misplaced comment eh.
Incidentally, there are parts deep in the US where they also speak french, although it's discouraged by the officials.

Hey, do not know whether to get an Archos 7 or an ipod touch 32 GB.
I like the idea of ipod games while flying long duration flights, but the archo is 7 inches, but dont know how portable in the pocket that can be.
I doubt i can get an iphone anytime soon as its very expensive and i need one that is unlocked and I only see them in 16 GB and that will not cut it for me. Any assistance would be great :)

ARCHOS 705 REVIEW: The worst possible product
------------------------------------------------------------------------
11-25-08 Email to Paul D. Manager RMA Center Archos USA (Email remained unanswered on 12-4-08) (Archos CEO Crohas was cc-ed):
Paul D.,
I have not had the pleasure receiving a call back from Archos "corporate" to further discuss the serious quality issues with my Archos 705 unit. I was expecting a call last Monday as promised.
To summarize our phone conversation from last week:
My Archos 705 Wifi 80 Gb unit is in repair for the sixth time in less than 1 year. The quality issues have ranged from faulty video card, to defective sound card, to hard disk reading errors.
I sent an email with my concerns to Archos USA in May 2008. I never received an answer. I then sent a certified letter with additional quality issues in August 2008. Again no answer.
The standard 1 year warranty will run out in the middle of December. At the historic rate the Archos 705 will become defective again by mid January 2009. In order to solve my problem with the Archos 705 quality, I requested in the order of preference:
1. A refund of the residual value of the unit, or
2. A warranty extension by 1 year, since I have not been able to enjoy the Archos Wifi for as long as a consumer should be able to, or
3. A docking unit, because this will allow me to use this portable device without touching it. This no-touch environment potentially extends its useful life.
Your offer of free software is amicable, but does not address the actual quality problems.
Regards
John S.
