We'll be frank -- we had kind of forgotten about the altogether astounding Golden Shellback after
seeing it work its magic on video this summer, but now the weatherproof coating is on sale, and it's mighty tempting. For the argonauts out there (or just you clumsy kids) who can't seem to honor the natural separation between gadget and liquid, this coating keeps your precious gizmo safe from the occasional splash of rain, mist, fog, steam or Seltzer water. Granted, such protection won't run you cheap (does it ever?), with a coating for the BlackBerry Pearl running $120, the iPod shuffle $60 and the iPod touch $120. GS will also encase a few other select devices, and honestly, they'll probably wrap up your Palm III if the offer is right.

I've never damaged or broken a device by liquid so its pointless for me but is a rather hefty price for a small problem.
I did, I deliberately took all my old cell phones and make videos of them being submerged in a glass of water...
iEye, send me a video of your iPhone you put under water.. can't wait to see it
A friend of mine once gave his iPod a sponge bath. He brought it to the genius bar and they told him they wouldn't replace it. but, the genius was cool and gave him a new one for $20.
here you go... (not rick rolled, spam or iPhone related)

Because I am talking about the 1st gen iPhone!!!!
Wow, the coating for the iPod shuffle costs more than the iPod shuffle...
So really you just by another shuffle if it is damaged.
Or just buy 5 iPod shuffle clones for the price of 1
Or you just skip the iPod altogether and buy a better mp3 player.
if it doesn't save it from gettting submerged in water its useless. chance are if you device gets splashed with a little rain its gonna be fine, in the worst case you'll have to let it dry.
look at them
100% waterproof shuffle: http://www.swimman.com/

.
I wonder if they'll be doing digital cameras? I think that would be worth getting waterproofed.
Someday, people will get smart and just start making electronics waterproof right out of the box.
Am I the only one who would want to listen to music while swimming?
*Raises hand*
I do to! I just haven't found anything for my iPod Nano that would allow me this :\ and those that I did find, I can't get in Europe :\
Cool, I'll cross my fingers and hope they will do this for the motorola s9, I'm on my second pair already, and I can't help but sweat when I jog.
once again, why isn't this just sapphire?

Hi Jeff, thanks for the pointer. I never heard of sapphire before. The problem with the s9 is that the switches and their bridges are glued together, and when that glue gets moist, it gets displaces and blocks those components from making contact. I'll have to look more into this and see if I can get my hands on it. Thanks.
Ok I read more on "sapphire" and it appears to be a fire-suppressant, used in place of water to protect expensive equipment. All that is good and mighty, but nowhere did I find any information on how it would protect a gadget from water.
Golden Shellbacks should get it for free or at least at a hefty discount... Its a lot of work to cross the equator so many times! Luckily we only had to smear our faces in the greasy belly of a chief once though. Ah... memories!
Is it just me or does everyone else hate iEye and want him banned off of this site? Thanks
My Apple Newton must be protected...
Nah, it's all about the Apple Powerbook Duo 2300.
I wonder how components that rely on electric contact, like the head phones jack and buttons. Since the material is (of course) is non conductive. How do they prevent the contacts inside the buttons to get coated and thereby cease to function?
it could be a well bounded substance that gets vacuumed after applied.
