Meizu M8 gets demoed in multi-part video form

We've already seen it unboxed and, of course, endlessly shown off by Meizu's own J. Wong, but it looks like some independent demos of the now infamous Meizu M8 are finally starting to crop up online, with one of the first coming from Chinese retailer CNMO.com. While some of the details are lost in translation, there's still quite a bit to be gleaned from the ten videos available at the link below, not the least of which is the fact that the touchscreen seems to be somewhat of an exercise in patience, to put things kindly -- check out part 8 for the challenge that is pausing a track. The phone's camera also seems to be a bit sluggish, but not completely out of line with your run of the mil cellphone camera. Touchscreen aside, however, the phone's interface does appear to be fairly slick and, yes, oddly familiar. Head on past the break to get started with part one of the blow-out, and hit up the read link to check out the rest.

I think he said it reminds mof text speak for Mate.
M8=Mate.
broli @ Nov 28th 2008 2:41PM
It has to be pointed out that this particular demo is running on older firmware/hardware.
Paul Chapel @ Nov 28th 2008 2:54PM
Every time a new imitator comes and fails, it just reminds me of how amazing the initial iPhone was and still is. The iPhone had so many great ideas and such simple implementation, I guess that it gave many people the idea that it was easy to make something just like it.
broli @ Nov 28th 2008 2:55PM
Wtf are you talking about.
Brian @ Nov 28th 2008 5:40PM
@paul chapel
You have to realize that the reason the iPhone looked so perfect was because no development pictures were shown. the final version was demoed by jobs, and it was released right after. There were no live action shots before it's release. This guy showed everything, and that's why the phone is being talked down on.
Los @ Nov 30th 2008 9:42PM
@ Brian
They actually say that the first iPhone was a prototype and that the 3g is the Final version... Food For Thought
AVG @ Nov 28th 2008 2:42PM
As if Microsoft wasn't kickin' ass enough, here comes Apple's REAL threat...
MEIZU.
Jobs is no doubt pacing in his bedchamber, drinking heavily and calling upon his finest advisors for a way out of this.
iEye @ Nov 28th 2008 3:15PM
It took Apple to push the cell phone industry to make changes...
I'm ashamed that it took MEIZU to come up with this...
Microsoft of all organizations should have been making something up like this to accompany the Zune platform...
Apple pushes out the iPhone Microsoft fires back with the mPhone. Mofo Microsoft makes the underlying software! WTF man?
iPod + iPhone + iTunes
VS
zune + mPhone + Zunestore...
throw in a little xBox and give the people a reason to say "I am a PC!"
Saad Rabia @ Nov 28th 2008 3:39PM
Strangely, agree with you, iEye!
It is a weired feeling, I must say. brrr.
Brian @ Nov 28th 2008 5:40PM
@iEye
if microsoft released a phone, it would be competing with itself, therefore it will not be releasing a phone. It might commission HTC or somebody to make a "microsoft phone" with a special version of windows mobile only for that device, but microsoft will not directly make the phone.
Ruben @ Nov 28th 2008 6:29PM
@iEye:
Why do PC users need a phone to be released by one of their software maker just to be proud of the platform? Just because Apple had to release an MP3 player and phone just to be relevant to the world doesnt mean other companies have to.
Besides, the PC team, something Microsoft did well with their ad campaign, revolves around life without walls. Linux is in that category as well. Thats what being a PC is. Windows Mobile, like the touch pro im typing on, has shown me that i should be free to do whatever i want with the device i spend money on (thanks XDA). Android is potentially the same. The concept of being a PC is more than just companies and the shit they make.

I won't feed the troll... I won't feed the troll... I won't feed the troll...
iEye @ Nov 28th 2008 7:38PM
A phone centered around windows and Zune interface would be a shinning light to draw in allies all over the world (internets) and unify them in the common hatred of the locked Apple regime.
It would give people something to work on instead of making random programs and skins that are not device specific.
The 1st gen iPhone is great, but I hate what Apple is doing to the entire thing, obviously slutting out to the shareholders and highest bidders to cater to the moronic people who don't even know how to change a HHD on a computer...

ipubs bastard child @ Nov 28th 2008 3:16PM
after years of development that I've followed closely because I wanted a sexy large screened phone that wasnt an iphone... and after enduring near vaporware staus, I salute j wong for releasing an actual product that looks to be a cut above the rest of the chinese ranks.
I gotta say though, i don't like it much. The interface is ugly and still relies to much on the iphone, it doesnt really offer anything new that any other phone with a similar shape doesnt already either which is a big shame though I'm sure meizu can only continue to get better depending on how they market this.
I'm also fearful of the OS's usefulness. Whilst this is in part my own ignorance as I primarily use windows mobile and not CE.
But yeah, well done meizu. finally.
Scott @ Nov 28th 2008 3:40PM
snazzy. I want one just to laugh at.
omar_arnaout @ Nov 28th 2008 3:47PM
Cool
kadajawi @ Nov 28th 2008 4:08PM
Maybe Engadget should point out that this is not the final phone but an old beta unit. The almost final version has just been shipped to testers, so reviews haven't really popped up yet.
http://translate.google.de/translate?u=http://mobile.pconline.com.cn/review/0811/1494861.html&sl=zh-CN&tl=en&hl=de&ie=UTF-8
That's the only review based on the final device that is available on the net, and they haven't finished writing it yet.
Jeff @ Nov 28th 2008 4:30PM
Pro tip to Meizu...open up the API for free.

If Microsoft decides to make their own phone, the 3rd party WM phone makers will slap Microsoft with anti-trust suits.
I think Microsoft is content with just selling WM. For the near future.
kadajawi @ Nov 29th 2008 6:18AM
Maybe not, but they don't have to use WM. So if MS makes a phone HTC etc. may decide... hm... Android's kinda cool, I think we stop making WM phones and move everything to Android. And then MS is screwed.
EgEN @ Nov 29th 2008 10:57AM

less talky talky.
Patel @ Dec 1st 2008 12:17PM
It makes a lot difference when some one developes the Phone on their own, doesn't matter the look or function is similiar or little different, but they have not deal with any one that is their + point. Apple steal the technology deal from Motorola..What you call it now ?? This technology actually belongs to Motorola and not to Apple.
ptj @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:13AM
does anybody have any idea of a price on this thing? like $200 or $700
