Atari 2600 stuffed into Game Gear, Sega Nomad seen casting envious glances
Oh sure, there's bound to be some protrusion when shoving a retro console into a gaming handheld, but inelegant styling was a way of life for Sega back in the mid-90s. Modder Chris Koopa has achieved the impossible by stuffing an Atari 2600 (or the important parts, anyway) along with 40 games into a hacked up Game Gear and enabling it to operate for nearly a full workday with just five AA batteries. And yeah, there's totally a 2600 cartridge slot to allow for playback of original titles. You know you're oddly interested in seeing more, so tap the read link for a few shots from the rear / side.

impressive, but the small screen leaves me feeling empty.
ropeburn @ Nov 30th 2008 5:44PM
achievement unlocked, now fit a better screen and you get another cookie
allgoodnameideastakenup @ Nov 30th 2008 5:44PM
Sorry for my ignorance, but was the screen originally that small?
bob @ Nov 30th 2008 6:16PM
No it was 3.2 inches
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Game_Gear
There you go. all the knowledge you would ever need.
allgoodnameideastakenup @ Nov 30th 2008 6:26PM
@ Bob;
i can see.... i can seee.... no more.... coverrr it.... noooo... ahhhh
takashisenke @ Nov 30th 2008 10:46PM
If a 3.2" screen fit inside that polygon, how big is this screen? 1.6"?
Metkis @ Nov 30th 2008 5:47PM
I just think this is more of a butchery than awesome. Now stuff a Gamecube in it... :D
iEye @ Nov 30th 2008 5:51PM
Just so he can play Custard's Revenge on the go... for shame!
AVG @ Nov 30th 2008 5:55PM
Yes. Custard's Revenge. A game based on a a range of preparations based on milk and eggs thickened with heat out to destroy the human race. Only you can stop them.
AVG @ Nov 30th 2008 5:52PM
I think this might be the worst mod I've ever seen. The screen is horrible and it looks like he ran the thing over with his car before he took photos of it.
Mod fail.
Mobius_1 @ Nov 30th 2008 7:18PM
Must have been an 18-wheeler...
Sentax @ Nov 30th 2008 11:44PM
Well. I wasn't going to share my story until I read the driving over it posts.
I had a Game Gear and my parents backed over it in their car. I was soo upset because we were going on a long car trip that day. My parents had an idea of going to wally mart and saying it just broke unexpectedly (the screen wouldn't turn on but there wasn't a crack). They exchanged the GG on the spot and I was set for the trip.
Point is, they hold up quite well being run over. :D
JStro @ Nov 30th 2008 5:55PM
Sega Game Gear: check
Big Red Button: check
Atari 2600: check
Motivation:
Also, is that real full workday or an Endadget writer's workday?
Opie @ Nov 30th 2008 5:57PM
This is a prime example of just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. (Unless you're a better modder who can put a usable screen on it)
MarbleMind @ Nov 30th 2008 6:15PM
The screen is gold compared to the original one. Not that this would say anything.
juangrande386 @ Nov 30th 2008 5:58PM
Correction- he shoved an atari flashback2 which is much smaller into the case and then did the cartridge mod
Flashpoint @ Nov 30th 2008 6:29PM
This is sensless.
first of all, there are already cartriges for Game Boy SP to play old Atari games.
Furthermore, you can emulate atari on PSP.
This is a complete and total waste of time. If you really want to buy a system to take advantage of old gamees, get a WII
allgoodnameideastakenup @ Nov 30th 2008 6:37PM
Your reasoning behind this is pretty much foolish. So there are better alternatives out there, then why bother creating your own right..
It's kind of like saying oh.. what's the point of building the SSC Ultimate Aero since the Bugatti Veyron already exists, looks better, and has the same capability.
It's the thrill of creating something that works, and the feeling of accomplishment you get once it's over.
Mobius_1 @ Nov 30th 2008 7:20PM
Correction: the point of the SSC Aero is to be somewhat faster than the Veyron, which it was.
ProfessorKaos @ Nov 30th 2008 8:28PM
He has a point. I was thrown by how small that screen is, did it really have to be that small to make it work? And with the Gameboy SP argument, he is right, why make it hard to play atari games when the PSP or Gameboy can do it? Yes hats off to his modder, but its not practical by any means, and your lying to yourself if you do think its practical to do this when better alternatives are out there, im sick of engadget readers dissing comments like this because they want to feel special to congradulate every single "because I can" modder out there.
AVG @ Dec 1st 2008 3:40AM
Agreed. His time could have been better spent doing something that would actually have been cool. Instead he comes out with this pile of pointless shit and we're supposed to pat him on the back?
Negative.
rita hainsworth @ Nov 30th 2008 9:14PM
Ohhh...I know all about tight cramped spaces..
Goatee Man @ Nov 30th 2008 10:41PM
I kind of doubt that.
Tabajara Labs @ Dec 1st 2008 2:44AM
Evil d**k rulez :D
sewertrout @ Nov 30th 2008 10:44PM
Yawn. Google "stella atari".
zzzz @ Dec 1st 2008 12:17AM
i think you're all forgetting how damn BIG the Game Gear is :S the screen looks small in the pictures but those things were hefty as hell
Torx @ Dec 1st 2008 1:18AM
waste of a perfectly good game gear.
Tabajara Labs @ Dec 1st 2008 2:45AM
You can see that in two ways. One, the guy who did it, DID IT! It is a portable atari. Period. But on the other side...man...this is the ugliest thing I've seen in AGES! :oD
Tabajara Labs @ Dec 1st 2008 2:47AM
BTW, Kevtris (google for it!) did it before using a NOMAD case and screen (which is RGB) and perforated board :) 128-in-1 atari clones are excellent for that, because of the one-chip-atari it comes with.
Now if someone made public a FPGA/CPLD implementation of an Atari-in-a-chip... :) :) :)
fistpittingnork @ Dec 1st 2008 9:34AM
Dear Game Gear,
I miss you. Come home.
Lots of love. xoxo
jon @ Dec 1st 2008 2:26PM
Why didn't they put the small screen in it?
