Nokia teases major new product launching tomorrow
Come on, you didn't think Nokia's only response to the G1, iPhone, and Storm would be the 5800 XpressMusic, did you? Word on the ground at this week's Nokia World conference is that Espoo is planning a major announcement tomorrow -- and hey, is that a countdown timer to the keynote that just went live on Nokia's site? Interesting. Our pal and yours Robert Scoble says that Nokia execs are running around bragging that "the Internet" is totally in the dark on this one, and that only a small number of people within the company have seen the new device. That's certainly got our ears perked up -- we're guessing this is something a little more major than that hinted-at touch Communicator. We'll let you know right away if you want to stay up with us -- the event is scheduled for 3:15AM EST.

WOW, an article from Nilay Patel about Nokia that *for once* didn't feature totally unjustified bashing of Nokia.
I'm proud of you, Nilay!
You shut your mouth when you're talking to me!
Then he wouldn't be talking would he dickface.
My dummy uncle got rid of an old Samsung for a Nokia 6590 because...get this...you can listen to the radio on it??????
So I showed him my iPhone for an hour and made him feel bad about his choice. Really bad. In fact, now he wants an iPhone.
Nokia has a music express touchscreen phone that looks good. With A2DP and a good touchscreen, I'd go for that. But never again will I own a fliphone and never again will my screen not be a touch.
Since when do I (or anyone else at Engadget) have anything against Nokia? Links or it didn't happen.
@Flashpoint
Did you really just compare a Nokia 6590 - released in 2002 - to an iPhone?
Because, you know, that's just priceless if you did.
Anyway, Scoble's article is interesting but, alas, suffers from the usual US centric viewpoint. Nokia will do what they always do - see what the competition releases then release something better (either in terms of cost and functionality or just plain better) than it. That's what they do although they do seem to be masters of completely ballsing up their marketing just now.
As for the US, well it's simply not an important enough market for Nokia at the moment. Of course this may change if they ever get round to resolving that long running tiff they have with the major US carriers I suppose.
Nilay - I won't post links as I'm sure my comment will get flagged as spam. However, in the past few days we've had an article refer to Nokia's "dwindling" market share (it fell 1% last quarter after a number of quarters of growth) and also one questioning Nokia's use of the word flagship.
Thanks for the bias free post this time around though.
@Nilay
Not against Nokia as such, just perhaps less favourable than to other companies like Apple or RIM. The article about the 120 5800's being sold in Russia is kind of a classic - on one hand a sly dig at Nokia's PR bollocks whilst at the same time vigorously fapping over the same antics undertaken by Apple when they supplied ridiculously small numbers of iPhone 3Gs to carrier outlets in the UK and other places.
Consistency: It's not just good in rice pudding or custard you know.
Here Nilay:

And the countdown didn't just start either, in fact, Chris already wrote about it a few days ago here

Unfortunately, I can only post 3 links per comment.
Cheers!
pwned....! :-)
Holy Sh!t peoples, give him a break! In most of the linked cases above, I agree with Nilay...I'm not particular fond of anything Nokia has done in recent years (and I have tried many phones from them).
You people seem to forget one important fact about this site: IT'S A F*CKIN' BLOG!!! Blogs are, pretty much by definition, made to convey one or more person's views about a particular topic. I.e. Engadget is a news blog offering tidbits of tech news with the writer's (i.e. Blogger's) opinion about said topic.
People read engadget because a) they like having other people find tech news for them and place them in one website) and b) because they enjoy the commentary and personal opinion of the bloggers. By no means do I agree with all the opinions on certain tech news here, but I don't expect my opinion to be exactly the same as others, especially a bunch of nerdy tech bloggers (I say that in a good way ;-).
So, keep reading engadget purely to take advantage of the tech news consolidation and ignore the personal opinion, and STFU about bashing other people's opinion, or go to a different site with blogger's who you agree more with.
@schmitty338
Nice apologetics. St Thomas Aquinas would be proud of you.
So your response is three posts I didn't write? Well played.
(That's not to say I don't agree with or stand by those posts -- I do -- but it's hard to prove my personal bias with other people's work.)
Am I the only one that noticed that none of the articles that ILoveApple posted were from Nilay?
If the site had a feature for me to specifically *search* through all posts written by you Nilay, I would have given you some examples. But, since you said 'or anyone else at Engadget', I went ahead and gave you some links.
Here you go iLoveApple:
http://www.engadget.com/bloggers/nilay-patel/
Another time repleace 'nillay-patel or just click on the bloggers name (which actually is a very common way to see the posts by a writter)
:)
And if you are going to complain about the lack of searching his posts here you go:

"Since when do I (or anyone else at Engadget) have anything against Nokia? Links or it didn't happen."
I think the links ILoveApple mentionned go to posts from "anyone else at Engadget", don't they?
It's just rumours. This wouldn't be the first time Nokia had an important-looking countdown on their site that counted down to something completely meaningless.
And i doubt they would announce a better touchscreen phone now because it would mess with the 5800 XM's sales.
Not really, they arnt going to have just ONE touchscreen phone. If anything they'll lower the price of the 5800 since thier intentions with that phone are it being the 'budget' model touchscreen that the masses can enjoy.
I just hope it isnt thier anouncment of thier subsidized phones coming to AT&T lol
i just hope its not another iphone knock off, so many phone company's are copying the iphones touch screen and features, lets hope nokia bring out something revolutionary for once, like steve jobs did
I know they aren't going to make only one touchscreen phone, Nokia isn't Apple :P
I'm just saying it might not be the best time as far as the 5800's sales are concerned.
And i'm also not in a hurry to get a Nseries touch phone, i'll be able to get one when my contract runs out in July ;)
Hey Clak, we all know what you want Steve Jobs to "bring out"...
Agree.I'm not holding my breath on this one. I still believe those killer Eldars mentioned TS devices are for 2009. Plus Nokia World is about soft usually.
Thought 5800XM dosen't mean that they couldn't announce N or E series device tomorrow for example. Firstly if they announce flagship TS tomorrow or wednesday it would probally be out at the time when 5800 price have stabilisied and will be available free from carriers in EU and Asia. N(or E series) TS would be on the higher price range and Nokia have been saying from the start that they will build portfolio for TS devices just like what they have on non TS devices already.
I'm sure Nokia would rather sell more expensive N-series phones than cheap 5800s.
Personally, I'm waiting for a touchscreen E-series device. I love my E71.
I agree G. I think you're right on the money. If there is something Nokia is known for, it is to never have phones that are remotely similar. They also make sure never to have more than one keypad phone and I am confident they will continue this practice for touchscreen phones.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/01/canceled-5-megapixel-nokia-slider-almost-looks-like-a-fake/
As long as its not a countdown for that, which was said to be canceled only to make a miraculous come back
I've already seen a few of these ads on other phone sites. . .
Will they show off thier touchscreen N phone? *hope*
I am waiting on the edge of my seat. Really.
PerezHilton awaits you.
I'm excited. More than the iPhone. I knew there was a big brother to the 5800 but I didn't think it would come this fast.(that's if it is a new phone.
We can still hope for the Touch Communicator can't we? I always get the feeling that I was the only one hoping for US 3G E90.
I just sold my N95 8GB. Not buying another Nokia until they clean up the mess that is S60.
You are going to see much more of Symbian next year when Symbian foundation start to roll out firstly from Nokia and others following like SE and Samsung :D
Maybe I just really hate Apple but a touch screen N-phone would equal win and probably warrant a purchase...
Let's be clear about one thing, it's going to suck. It's going to have a crappy resolution, it's going to have a horrible UI, and the responsiveness is going to suck.
That said, I've been wrong before.
*Looks at the N85 and 5800XM*
Indeed you have.
Mark, I'm sorry but those weren't exactly good examples. The N85's screen sucks, end of. I don't care if it's OLED, QVGA has been around for AAAAAGES. The 5800 has a resistive touchscreen - need I say more? Let's face it, S60 isn't exactly known for having an excellent UI?
HOWEVER, I highly doubt that the new device(if there is one) will still be using that shitty QVGA resolution, it seems Nokia have learnt their lesson in that field.
You do realise that one of the reasons why the 5800 has a resistive touchscreen is because one of Nokia's target markets is Asia where it's kind of useful for handwriting recognition? Capacitive touchscreens aren't exactly brilliant at this as you would know if you'd done any research. Also the idea that capacitive touchscreens are intrinsically better than resistive touchscreens is, quite frankly, bollocks. It's the implementation that matters.
As for the N85's screen being rubbish well I'm sorry; you're just talking out of your arse on that one.
Whatever it is, I hope they price it aggressively (under 250 would be nice) so that American markets finally do pick up on Nokia phones and figure out why Asia goes nuts over them. No matter how great this thing is, don't think it will do much in the states if it's some 580 bucks on a contract.
Nokia phones are never on contract in the US
Oh my bad.
I sure hope this thing blows the iphone and storm outta the water! I used to be a Nokia fiend back in the day, but to me they seem to have lost a lot when they chose to ignore the corp world and fail to support exchange and common smartphone features. Here's hoping they will hit the ground running tomorrow with whatever this is...
I will be so pissed if it is another camera phone with a media player!
am excited
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=w-DcNPFWhbk
FOLED phone with a touch surface and 16GB. gigidy gigidy
If a touch communicator is released, I'm dumping the E71. As long as it costs less than the E90, I'm good.
Here's hoping for a N-Series touchscreen phone, that will beat any competition (*cough*iPhone*cough*) without even being turned on, like the 5800!
this will be the 1st flagship phone of nokia that wasn't leaked before its official release
http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/008/11/it_will_be_nseries.htm
It is a shame Nokia always have poor distribution in the US and their prices are normally sky high and unsubsidized. As good as N-series phones typically are... they cannot compete with the $180 G1 or the $200 Storm / iPhone.
To bad we'll be playing GTA IV on PC instead of caring.
it will be a full internet experience (HSUPA). Remember the Nokia - Ericsson deal which stopped. Maybe now with Option.
I don't think you know what HSUPA is. I would rejoice if it actually is a phone with HSUPA, but I think few others would care.
Shit this announcement has just gave me a browner !
Go for it Nokia GO FOR IT !
I have longed for the day Nokia would actually produce a smartphone to compete with the iPhone and such.
Give us some 480x800 res, 3'' + touch screen, 3G+, wifi, SD slot, and a nice camera and I'm sold !
(yes this basically is a Touch HD but hey Symbian >> WinMo)
Oh and by the way, if this phone sucks I'll kick their ass one by one if I have to.
Don't forget a 3.5mm jack.
It gave you a browner? Ew.
Could the new device be a new internet tablet - N9XX?
To quote Engadget:
"Come on, you didn't think Nokia's only response to the G1, iPhone, and Storm would be the N9XX, did you?"
Hehe if the guys in Finland indeed are going to release an internet tablet with the N9XX-tag, please low rank me!
I really don't think they can keep the lid on S60 devices very well, makes me wonder if perhaps it could be Android based. My friend at Nokia has had sight of three upcoming S60 devices which this doesn't seem to fit into but did relate to the leaked roadmap of a month or so ago.
Nokia? It's a joke. They have some stupid open source platform? and the phone which has interface like old man?
How can company that owns 40% of all phones sold and same amount of the smartphone market be joke?
They have renewed the whole portfolio again and again. While the last generation phones have been a bit meh the next jump from them has always been major and that's why they have been on dominant position now for over 8 years.
are you talking about those 40% sells to developing country? LOL.
like CHINA? LOL...
it's funny. Another iphone killer joke.
Get a life, people. It's gonna be a joke. like creative.
Obs it's really easy tofind out : the guy who said that is american and Nokia isn't..
If you're not with US you are against US..
More seriously, Nokia ruled and re-invented the cell-phone world (with very accessible 3210 for exemple, which was owned by like 20% of the population in europe lol) at a time when americans had 1 cell phone for 100 inhabitants.
The USA discovered Nokia like 3 years ago, and they were already in declined.
(Oh and I'm pretty sure if you ask people in the street of Houston for exemple, 50% will say the iPhone is the first device to bring html surfing into a cellphone)
Lol American preaching about develobing cell phone countries :D Only countrie that still buys Motorola. So first people complain that Nokia is too expensive and no you people say that only develobed countries buy them. Would have wanted to see how Amercans would have bought N95 when it came out and costed over 700 euros and was bought over 15 million people in Europe and Asia.
By the way DYNC China owns like half of the USA's debt so be nice with the guy :)
Also the world is not composed of the USA and the 3rd world.
There is also Europe, Japan, or south america and the Middle East.
USA count for barely 350 Millions human beings, so that leaves more than 6 billions non-american living on earth did you know?
Actually do you even know the difference between a billion and a million?
It nice to be naive enough to be proud of your entire country but pay some respect for the rest of us.
come up with a touch communicator and ill be happy. the E90 price will go down
Absolutely. This goes both ways. Many of non nerds will probally think in Europe that 5800 was the TS phone that brought the TS to the mainstream. Past 2 years have been Nokia's biggest growth in smartphone market share AND yes they have declined 5% in this year on smartphone market, but hopefully this announcment with 5800 that is already selling out brings them back to 50%.
Thought Nokia have had some dissapointing releases this year so we will see.
Honestly saying, the US cell phone market is pretty undeveloped (i have lived in US and Asia). In US, the carriers determine the cell phones that the consumers will have to get rather than giving a choice to consumers to actually choose what cell phones they want. Also, the cell phones plans here are in a sky rocket high price compared to Asia. It turns out that in Asia, you buy a pay a higher price for the phone and less for the plans. In US, you pay for the expensive plan and cheaper phones. As it turns out, people in Asia pays much less for obtaining a cell phone. (For example, a plan for i phone in hong kong, i believe costs like 30 US, compared to 70 here, when you add the numbers up, you pay 40 more per month and 480 more per year, and when you add all the numbers up, it's much expensive to own a cell phone in US). When you get the perspective, it all makes perfect sense seeing unsubsidized phone selling for 600+ USD.
this is not asia, there laws are enforced.
lol No kia
do they know that they dont have the "it" factor like apple?
I dont get it. it is like ugly betty teasing us with short shorts = no body cares.
I am willing to bet it's about their music service going live worldwide
I for one hope that whatever announcement nokia has to make will result in a phone that arrive in the market by the end of Q1 2009. according to the leaked nokia roadmap, there was supposed to be a 5mpix touch-enabled device prototype reaching availability around week 48 or 49 of 2008. If the device being announced tomorrow is indeed the 5mpix touch-enabled phone, nokia definitely earned themselves a chunk of my wallet. flame away :-P
Truthfully, if they do an iBite phone, it's gotta have the price to compete. Nokia phones are just toooo expensive. All my phones were nokia up to the E61, then came the iPhone. Now I upgraded to the 3G. You just cant' beat the price for what the phone does. I believe PRICE is what stops U.S. cell companies to have a relationship with nokia, also the time for a new nokia phone to hit the U.S.. -I mean I remember Waiting and waiting for the E61 to reach NYC.. And when it did, The price was crazy!
And please don't use the "Price for an unlocked phone" debate...
Hopefully this new device will be worthy of having the ridiculous price tags attached to most nokia high end phones.
N97
qwerty, touch, camera everything!
http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/008/11/nokia_n97_to_be_released_today.htm
countdown is now over, still no link :(
Oh man, I love the iPhone, but I can't wait to see a device using the powerful new ARM Cortex-A8 processors, and potentially the new PowerVR SGX generation of graphics accelerators. Nokia uses T.I. chips in their phones, so lets all pray this baby uses one of the OMAP 3000 series with a Cortex-A8 chip.
Looking the Wikipedia page for Imagination, the makers of PowerVR graphics, I found this:
Texas Instruments OMAP3430 ( SGX530 + Cortex-A8)
- Nokia N series Touchscreen (2009)
Oh man, if this is true, this thing is going to rock! I don't have significant experience with Nokia N-series devices, but hopefully they have spent some serious resources optimizing their software and improving the usability of the user interface to try to compete with Apple. If they have, this thing could potentially be the first real iPhone challenger..
