AMD Phenom II CPU roadmap foreshadows potent Spring
Not that AMD's being overly secretive about its forthcoming Phenom II processor, but it hasn't exactly been forthcoming with model names / estimated ship dates, either. And that folks, is why we look to leaks. A recent writeup over on Chinese site HKEPC details the impending chip family by listing over a dozen new CPUs (including two Phenom II X3s and seven Phenom II X4s) that are destined to be announced between CES and June 2009. Not surprisingly, some of the model names aren't -- shall we way, completely original -- with the 3GHz Phenom II X4 940 and 2.8GHz Phenom II X4 920 sharing eerily similar naming schemes with Intel's fresh Core i7. Of course, we're not sticklers for silly things like that -- we just want to see a few slabs of silicon get out the door on time. Is that really too much to ask, AMD?

"...with the 3GHz Phenom II X4 940 and 2.8GHz Phenom II X4 920 sharing eerily similar naming schemes with Intel's fresh Core i7."
I foresee a new Engadget headline style to go along with the classic "CE-Oh no he didn't!":
"CP-You did NOT just got there!"

AMD is the only hope now, Core i7 is dead, TBL bug.

I am eager to see what AMD has to offer. Hope they will make some strong dual core processor, most people need single threaded super fast execution, not 4 useless semi-slow cores even on server, you do not have 4 ethernet cards ether.

Wanna re-read that article? That is an old document. Intel says that there is no problem because it was fixed with a BIOS update before the Core i7 was released.
I'm getting the Core i7, unless someone can come up with a reason against it. All I've been hearing are good things about it.
loosely_coupled @ Dec 2nd 2008 7:01PM
"you do not have 4 ethernet cards ether."
Are you seriously suggesting you need multiple ethernet cards to take advantage of many-core CPUs? Do you have any idea what you are talking about?
Bladey @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:30AM
'is that really too much to ask, AMD' - engadget....
usually..(and sadly) .... yes
Laughing Man @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:31AM
I am happy. :) . Time to start planning that birthday upgrade.
nick @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:46AM
Assuming these get out the door, I'm not as interested in the processors as the motherboards. Say what you will about phenoms performance, the platform looks pretty cool, and now that AMD seems to be putting out decent graphics cards again, I'm assuming the next few platforms will integrate nicely. Come on AMD, make intel work for it.
Angus Hedger @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:46AM
Come on AMD, If they can get the clock up, and keep the heat down they should do well, fingers crossed!
And maybe do it without tying us down to slow (for DDR3) memory!
Fusion Fuzo 05 - Mr Professional @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:48AM
FUGLY, intels better, because I said so, so everyone buy intel for better performance

They're definitely losing to Intel.... I mean, look how the new i7 logos posses three different shades of gloss compared to the boring ol' light comes from northwest for 3d feel trick seen here. Needs shinier logo.
kenny @ Dec 2nd 2008 10:55AM
Geez, engadget stories get even dumber than most of the comments they get. Can you at least WRITE like a grown up person? ffs...
ProfessorKaos @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:06AM
Do you even READ engadget??? Thats how I taLK HaVenT yOu seEn my MOVIES!? De3p BluE seeee! F**kiN SHARK ate ME!!!!
Seriously dude, how did you not* know engadget writers write like this. Read more than ONE post. :)
ProfessorKaos @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:07AM
Also, please quote what you think is so WRONG with the post above? I have seriously seen worse from writers here...
:P

Delays delays delays, if they got things out on time, they would have a fighting chance. I like AMD somtimes but they take too long to come out with awesome tech. that intel does before hand, stealing their thunder.
kal326 @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:05AM
If these can make it out before the more budget oriented i7 chips and chipsets come out I might be interested if the performance is decent compared to whole platform cost. As if stands right now, an i7 setup is just a bit to expensive to justify for the boost over Q6600 setup I am already running.
Bellzebub @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:20AM
This is 'phenom'enal news for AMD ;-)
Ok, I'm sorry. I just could not resist. Sure someone here will have written this before...

so this is the first news of naming scheme for the new processors? try at least 4 weeks ago

AMD copied i7's product names.
Intel copied off AMD's architecture.
You say tomato... :-)
KeegdnaB @ Dec 2nd 2008 11:36AM
Note to Cautiously Optimisic AMD Fanboys like myself....
These are showing promise so keep the faith brothas! They can't bring in revenue to invest back in R&D if no one buys what they currently have. Don't jump ship and better days will come.
And as pointed out in any AMD related post on engadget.....even if you don't like them, be glad they still exist. No one wants a monopoly in an industry like this, and with no competition Intel wouldn't waste a minute jacking up their prices
Dubb @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:15PM
I'm just happy they are letting us know it will indeed require a new socket.
I'll wait and see the pricing/FSB speed on the socket AM3 boards.
More than likely I will be sticking with AMD.
Hackettman @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:40PM
Damn I just got my phenom 9550...... Eh maybe a year or two from now......
dotAaron @ Dec 2nd 2008 12:20PM
I want to know why none of the big tech sites are reporting about the Core i7 TLB bug.
The Phenom is released, has TLB bug, media goes ape about the issue.
Core i7 is released, has TLB bug, Intel confirms this, no one could care less.
The Phenom's were fine after a BIOS/Software Patch and so are the Core i7's, but why are the media NOT reporting about Core i7's TLB bug? Why isn't it getting the same amount of slating the Phenom did?
fieldcar @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:25PM
simply: fanboys... I feel every tech site got a sensual massage from Intel during core 2's release.
Still rockin AMD! 9850 here!
andrew autopsy @ Dec 2nd 2008 4:54PM
Intel can pay tech websites more than AMD can. They can also afford to give OEM's better deals. Why do you think the AMD64 chips didn't steal market share from Intel when the p4's were steaming piles of crap for several years? Its all because Intel has more money to throw into PR. Pretty lame.
Hung @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:16PM
"A quick search on Google will show you this errata was not only in the Core i7 processor but in various other Intel chips, including Core 2, Atom, Celeron, Pentium Dual-Core and Xeon series processors. The TLB issue has been known since 2007 and has been fixed via BIOS microcode updates."

EK @ Dec 2nd 2008 2:34PM
My turn! I hate AMD. I hope the company goers down. I don't care if intel has a monopoly whoever says no one wants that doesn't have the right to speak for me. AMD fan boys don't want that maybe. I could care less. AMD SUCKS that is why media concentrates on reporting their problems. Actually I don't hate amd I hate geeks and nerds that are AMD fanboys. That is why I dog on AMD and Computer gaming. CONSOLE GAMING FOR LIFE!! I think even if intel was as cheap as AMD damn geeks would still chose AMD to be different. Oh yeah whenever engadget puts out news on AMD I cruise the comments and rank down anyone who is highly or highest ranked. Why? Because when I always get ranked low my comments can't be seen. That is messed up. So I try to bring these geeks down with me! from home, work, or road all three places, I am ranking you down! YEP there goes that rabies infested EK again who didn't have his shots today.....now come the not so clever, clever nerds and their not so clever clever comments! Here, Nerds, tell the people something they don't know about me!!!!

Wolfticket @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:12PM
I feel ashamed of the previous post because we share the same species.
LonnieDvD @ Dec 2nd 2008 3:49PM
Come on AMD, stay alive!! The last thing we need is an intel monopoly, prices will go through the roof!!
chansthename @ Dec 2nd 2008 5:39PM
uhh...
have you seen the prices for core i7?
jackal @ Dec 2nd 2008 6:01PM
Ya know..I was going to down rank you at first but after reading your comment a few times, I guess I'd also be scarred for life if I walked in on my mom in leather bondage gear on the living floor getting bukkaked by a circle of AMD gaming rigs while daddy was at work. I know trauma sucks, but I'm sure there's a pill or a therapist with your name on it.
jackal @ Dec 2nd 2008 6:03PM
That was meant for you EK. Hey, engadget, could you please fix your FUBARED commenting system? I can handle being made to look like a jackass once because of it, but it becomes a little annoying after multiple times.
