Love the remote features and microphone. This is a great innovation that doesn't get talked about a lot, but it's essential for people who don't want to constantly be looking at their iPod to change the music. Now my only question is whether the microphone will interact with any of the VoIP apps available in iTunes.
Lifehacker did an article a while back about VoIP on the iPod Touch, although they were going the jail broken route. They updated the article to reflect the fact that Fring is now available in the App Store.
Has anyone here used either method to make VoIP calls? And if so, how did it work for you? I was thinking about getting an iPhone over Christmas, but I might settle for an iPod Touch since there is more storage available and I have a fairly robust WiFi network at work.
the mic on the headphones works with voip apps. i use the actual headphones for voip with fring on my ipod touch 2gen. no jailbreak needed. the mic and the clicker should stay the same, they just added volume controls.
Thanks, iceman. How's the sound quality? Does it lag any? I've read some reviews from users and some people seem to think that the first version of Fring was buggy, but most of those reviews are from two months ago. I'm assuming they've had updates since then.
I really hope Apple offers a 3G component to the iPod Touch in the future. They could really clean up in the market if they did that, not that they aren't cleaning up right now, but they could grab close to 80 percent market share in the DAPs if they incorporated 3G into the iPod Touch and offered VoIP from all major carriers. I'm sure that they would be able to extend service beyond AT&T, since AT&T seems to only have exclusive rights to the iPhone, but I could be wrong.
Once again, Apple has created some exciting times, but will they be smart enough to take advantage?
using fring with the ipod touch 2g works fine. it does not lag, but the sound quality is not that good. i recently tested nimbuzz and it worked like charm. the mic on the earphones do a good job.
the headphone jack on the actual iphone does not accept clicks from the volume control, thats why it's not compatible, but you can still use the new in ears like you did with the original ones that came with your iphone.
Thanks, iceman. I'll be sure to check out nimbuzz if and when I get an iPod Touch. I'm leaning toward the iPhone, but I don't know if I can handle that service contract. It would probably be better to stick with my old clam shell phone and use the Touch at work so I don't go over my minutes every month.
And yeah, I don't know why people are so upset about the iPhone compatibility thing. Those headphones were presented at the iPod special event in September. The special event had nothing to do with the iPhone, but people gotta bitch about Apple and seems like they come to Engadget to do it. All these comparisons between the iPhone/iPod and other phones/MP3 players is really starting to bore me. I've got a bazillion songs on iTunes and quite a few movies and as long as I do, I'm locked into Apple for my music players and that won't change unless they really start to screw up.
Innovation? So because they did not put real buttons on the side of the Itouch/Iphone for volume control< charging you $75 dollars for headphones with a volume control is Innovation ?
Oh I forgot they also don't work with Iphone..
I carry an Itouch in my pocket and I hate having to take the thing out and then slide it to unlock it and then change the volume. just a couple of up down buttons on the side would have been so easy what am i thinking they would not have been able to sell $75 headphones that do it later
Apple you are brilliant you make people buy add ons that could have been built ins
arggh... typical arse-kissing responses from Apple fans. remote and mic are "great innovations"?
- my old (cassette-playing) walkman came with remote on the headphones, and that was about 20 years ago. - just about every fricking headsets that come bundled with a mobile phone has a mic.
I suppose they are decent features, but really are just logical step rather than "innovations". Not to mention that if Apple only just started implementing them, they are sort of late.
The new FiOS HD DVR, arguably the biggest update since Verizon released a DVR, thanks to its external storage support, enhanced multi-room functionality and slick new 16x9 HD user interface.

It's funny, my Samsung headphones can do that as well. You know what's the best part though? Not having to deal with wires since they're A2DP-
...Oh.
We're talking about the iPhone here.
Never mind.
2 minutes... Wow, that was faster than I would have guessed.

@Tony: ever tried to click the home button twice instead of slide to unlock?
@Tony: St00p, both the iPhone and iPod touch has volume rockers on the side. You don't have much credibility telling me you own an """"iTouch"""".
@Lundmark
Actually only the 2nd gen itouch has the volume rockers. The first gen owners are still stuck using the UI
@lundmark
Well, apparently you don't know IPOD TOUCHES because the first generation didn't have a volume rocker.
Don't get so smug.
