Optibike's OB1 hybrid electric mountain bike: yours for a cool $13,000

Sure, it won't stabilize itself, it doesn't sport a cute wicker basket, and it has a five figure price tag, but the 2009 Optibike OB1 is on sale now -- and if you're a typical Engadget reader, you're probably considering four or five of them for you and your family. Designed by award winning bike designer Jim Turner, this lithium-ion battery-powered hybrid features a GPS, fully integrated PDA (to keep track of the vehicle's performance), two hours of battery life, and -- for those of you who like to kick it old school -- pedals. You know, for pedaling. Be sure to order yours now -- only twenty-four OB1s will be manufactured this year.

If I was 26, this would be lame--or I'd have to be lame to even think about riding one, and I couldn't afford it anyway. But add 30 years and this machine looks real appealing.
I'm in a similar situation to the guy in SF, except here in Kansas, we have wind instead of steep hills. (I did my first ride in SF before most of you were born, not to mention being the first person to do a century from Monterey to Los Gatos and back over the Santa Cruz Mountains (Hwy 17) in 1970. Riding in strong winds is very similar to riding steep grades, except that controlling your bike is a trickier proposition.
We've got 25 winds gusting to 40 today, and that's typical nearly half the days here in Kansas from January to June. I try to ride 30 miles a day 5-6 times a week, and routes are limited, so I often have to battle a headwind for 10 miles coming home. No fun for an oldster. I hate indoor training, but often have no choice. So, what's not to like about getting an assist? On low-wind days I'll use my regular bike.
A plus with the Optibike is when we go to Colorado next summer, I can go trail riding with my kids. My wife too!
